Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

You might want to move you're swap file to a different drive, that will free up space on you're C: drive.
For some reason, I struggle to understand this sentence. Do you mind to elaborate?
And disable the hibernation file (which can only go on the C:\ drive). You lose hybrid sleep, but you'll gain the same amount of space on your drive as you would RAM you have, so 8/16GB.
I never had access to hibernation on this machine. Even the settings are not available.
But my drive has a second partition, "D: Recover". It's about 25 GB tall.

I can maybe answer this. The "swap file" or "paging file" as it's called, is some space on your hard disk that the system uses to temporarily store stuff when main memory (RAM) is full or mostly full.

You can mess with it by going to advanced system properties and drilling down a few pages (here's a screenshot of mine).

Note that I have mine set to automatically manage itself, which is just fine in most cases. You can move it to another drive or change its size, but you better know what you're doing. It is quite possible to mess things up, so don't just start changing stuff :)

My paging file is very small, according to this screen, but the size can change dynamically because it's under automatic control. Anyway, I just leave it alone.

That might be the Windows recovery partition - check the Medion manual for that one. If you can live with the risk of losing your Windows installation (not sure about the license), then you can repartition that one away. Repartitioning on a live system is always a rather risky idea, though.

Aha so that's like the virtual memory cache basically? TY, i learn new things about Windows every day still :]

...and yep, i'd be very careful about moving it off the main SSD - it's likely in constant system-critical use on a contemporary system, especially running in 8GB of RAM

Mines set to my E: drive, it's no big deal moving it around, it requires a reboot and only uses free space. I've been messing with mine for years and never had issues sense Windows 98 with it's memory leaks, Windows NT SP3-2000 seemed to fix all that. The worst that can happen is "Getting low on memory or out of memory" messages.

Ah. Now I see clearer. Thanks.
The virtual memory file is nothing new to me, even though I didn't touch it on this computer. Yet.
Back in the days when I set my computers up myself (construction and software installation), I would routinely put the virtual memory on a partition on the disk that provided fastest access. These precautions aren't of much necessity on SSDs, though.
But getting it out of harm's way could be helpful.

On another note, the installation of Live went smoothly while I was away.
I just went and started the game, jumping right into the settings and dialed all graphics settings on the lowest setting that isn't off.
It runs, but only just and sometimes struggles a bit to keep the framerate stable. And the machine heats up a little faster than on Legacy, which means that hourlong sessions won't be feasible for the time being.

I am kinda glad that this isn't my first excursion into Live territory, even though the first one was way shorter than this one. But it means that I don't have to start from scratch. I have some ships in my hangar - almost all of those mentioned in my signature, minus the Elusive Imp and the Hound Dog.

There's one question still lingering in my head... Does Oddyssey require additional installation of data now that I have Horizons Live running?

I've done that before, but I didn't remove the partition, I just reduced its size...
But I think this is easier on HDDs than on SSDs...

Re: the virtual memory... I checked and changed my settings for the file. I was quite surprised to see that it was about 13k MB tall...
As there wasn't enough space on D: to get anything of a reasonable size put on there, I "split" the file and kept part of it on C: with the rest sitting on D:. I've done this with HDDs in the past and it always ran smooth.

I'm pretty sure Odyssey and Horizons Live use the exact same code. Horizons just shuts off the on-foot access.

I would be surprised if that's not the case.

But I guess you'll find out pretty fast :)

I didn't keep up, but if you connected an usb stick please don't use that as a normal disk. It has limited writes and will quickly brick if you use it as a system drive. It's ok to write backups or store data on, but don't use it for random read/writes.
Yeah, my initial intention was to have Live sitting idle on the stick and Legacy running on the main drive. But I realized that this wouldn't work as steam isn't capable of split installations.

Returning from an about two hour long session, I have to correct myself in this regard, as the heat isn't as bad as I initially thought. And the reconfiguration of the virtual memory did the trick, it runs quite smooth now. It is definitely playable - not the prettiest without antialiasing and all the other stuff, but still good for some stunning views in space.

Here's a little gem to share...

I took an optional Windows update today and it it introduced the " "PrtScn" button now invokes the snip tool"".

Thing is, I had my "switch modes" assigned to that bind - you would think the game binds would prevail over Windows when in-game but... oh no.

You would think an update like that would be kind enough to ask you if you wanted the PrtScr button changed to the snip tool and not just do it regardless of the users wishes.
