Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I was sure you'll don't get it.

Nah, got it in one thanks bud...

Truly astounding. 10yrs+ of dev and 'Can X fit in Y?' is still leading content ;)

I'm glad the Fury was worth the money to that fine citizen though, for its parking possibilities and such. Even if it's not a view that's universally shared ;)

Berks thinks the Fury is suitable for roleplay and nothing more...

It sounds perfect for SC. I'm not seeing the scam ;)

(PS as a total aside, this was confusing)

I was sure you'll don't get it. ...
Not everyone gets it right away - it can be hard for beginners: "will" is the auxiliary. The auxiliary carries the negation. The negation of will is "will not" which will be contracted to "won't". The correct way is: "I was sure you won't get it." But, honestly, xou should never be sure of such a thing unless it's someone who just keeps pulling mumpitz out their rear.

But yet you claim to understand Elite without playing that either. You can't have it both ways.
I've played it a bunch of hours. It's better than some here that had posted thousand of posts about SC without having played it !
And notice how I don't post thousand of post about ED in the ED part of the forum

Seeing as nothing is happening in SC land, have some...

Totally Unverifiable Gossip, from the Paaaaast:

This guy claims to know a bunch of old Origin devs. And he likes to tap them up for their opinions on Chris...

Lived in the Austin area for 40+ years. I know a ton of the old line gamers here. Including a bunch who went on to be computer developers. Since the beginning of the [SC] Kickstarter, I've talked to 13 who worked with Roberts at Origin. No discussion about CR with 3 of them (too bad, 'cause they worked on the movie, would probably have some informative tales), but the other ten had interesting and uniformly negative things to say, privately, about Roberts. Of the Origin crew, only Robert Garriott was held in worse regard.

None of it's verifiable. But lots of it aligns with other sources ;). Especially when it comes to Chris's foibles...

---

I've talked to a friend who worked extensively with CR at Origin: He calls Roberts a narcissistic egomaniac, and said that he believes everything he says, regardless of its relationship to reality. A lot of folks buy in to his palaver, and think that his name on the box meant he did way more in those games than is actually the case.

Since I knew these folks when they worked for Origin, I am pretty sure about the vetting.

Roberts was the boss at Digital Anvil for four years, and spent a lot of money, producing a big flat nothing. It took Microsoft nearly three years to finish that game in some releaseable form, and it was already a year and a half late upon the buyout.

His helming of the Wing Commander series is not the sign of greatness that some presume. Roberts had teams of very competent people to support him, and folks who could draw the line at some of his more vainglorious ideas. IIRC Warren Spector was brought in as a co-producer in the first WC to get it out the door after numerous Roberts-induced delays. It was also reported to me that once the cut scenes were introduced to the series, Roberts spent most of his producer-time shooting those. Etc.

As far as his personality, there's a pretty striking uniformity of opinion about him from the folks I have talked to. While other major players from the Origin era have a range of opinion about them, Roberts is uniformly negative. Even before the SC kickoff I knew of Roberts as the second most disliked guy at the company. It just took questions about the Kickstarter to discover why.

Roberts is not particularly fun to work for, nor particularly competent. The only person I know who worked at CIG left after a short time there. His report? 'Definitely not an enjoyable work environment'. All the old Origins folks that I know have nothing nice to say about Chris.

(source)

Because I was aware of Chris Roberts history. How he'd never delivered a game outside of Origin Systems reasonable structure. How he needs to personally pee on every part of the game to mark it as 'his!'

(source)

One old Origin hand told me that that company would have folded early without Robert Garriott there to crack the whip.

[Starr] Long was supposed to do that for Richard. I doubt Chris would allow anyone to sully his genius.

(source)

Roberts didn't even do the heavy lifting on coding in the first WC. Stephen Beeman did that, and got rewarded by getting the nod to direct WC2. Roberts continually mythologizes his contributions to any game he's ever worked on.

Though old Origin hands who don't like him otherwise, do give him credit for the games' immersion and theatrics.
