Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Is this the Starfield thread? It's been very difficult to tell. ;)
yeah, but since hardware is related, and was discussed at the starfield showcase it's still relevant :)

in other news :)

On the flip side are you pro or con regarding the planet travel system? I don't care to be honest, if you can pick any place on a planet and land, that's fine by me, in ED I always travel with autopilot on as it's easier, and the complexity to fly the ship is minor and not important to be honest, we have now played ED without crew, a very basic planetside system no EVA, and no base building so if I get all that and have to dump flying manually from planet to planet I'm just fine to be honest.

It's funny and from an ED players view point many planets are not always super good, I mean we can't even set up shop on a planet in ED, in the old Elite game you could setup a mining facility and it would mine for you on auto, yes I know that ED is a MP game and FDEV was worried about the economy but look where we are now? it's just silly, game mechanics like EVA boarding a ship and taking it, or potentially stealing it sounds much more compelling and ED missed that boat, now will it be good in SF I don't know however the gameplay evolving it sounds good, I just wonder if you can sell the ship for scraps and turn it into materials so you can build more yourself.

Well, we will now see that in SF.

I think 1000 planets with ~100/10% having life is a nice sweet spot. I stopped exploring in ED, never getting to Elite because I just didn't enjoy it any more. I am always envious of others that can RP/jell with those sort of mechanics.

Of course, 1000 planets might only be the starting point; there's no reason why over several years they can't add more sectors with different themes/game elements to them. Like a new sector with a sentient space-faring race that meets head-to-head with humanity. That would be one hell of a story - bring peace or do the opposite. There's probably more examples but I feel that the limits are endless.

Also I am not initially planning of following the main story to start - I want to explore, trade, build up some cash and do some of the side-stories. Hopefully within a few months modders will be adding new stories and quests into the game, as well as new assets and things to do.

Not heard anyone mention it but it would be really great to take an abandoned base and make it your home.

Todd said that the amount of planets is just a value, so I'm sure someone will make a mod where there will be more at some point.

ok, now we know the date and what the bundle will give.

Now what we can see is A) many different designs of the dashboard, and as highlighted here there is an autopilot you can toggle off and on.

I really loved Morrowind, more than any other game in the series, more than Oblivion, more than Skyrim (i didnt even got to finish skyrim - somehow it managed to lose me somewhere mid road)

.... the other benefit of it being a Bethesda game is within 20 minutes of launch, there will be large mod teams working on a insert your favourite franchise here mod.

And with all the stuff we're seeing with Skyrim at the moment when it comes to NPCs and voice acting (which is where they usually get let down in my mind), I'm cautiously looking forward to whatever they produce.

That's a nice idea. I wonder if there will be attacks on your outposts. They let you set robot sentries so maybe there is?
There will be attacks on your outpost, depending on your rep, the fraction you belong to etc. as far as I can tell the system is rather complicated compared to other RPG games.

"It’s also implied that your outpost can be attacked because of the “Integrity” stat, so we can expect some defense and attack mechanisms to be available in the outpost build mode."

“It's also a bit more hardcore of a role playing game than we've done. It's got some really great character systems – choosing your background, things like that. We’re going back to some things that we used to do in games long ago that we felt have really let players express the character they want to be. So I think when you see it being played, you would recognise it as something we made.”

The first thing that came to mind with integrety is wouldn't it be good if your outpost degrade or gets damaged from the elements. I know it wouldn't be in game, it souns too much like Star Citizen dream crafting.

Going back to what Comandante said about how he wanted to take over an abbandoned outpost. I'm 50/50 about if it might be possible. The sandwich thing shows persistency, but is that game wide or just on your ship? I think in the video she brought the sandwiches back to the ship? The way I understand the landing zone thing is its generated when you land and might not recreate the same scene if you land on the same spot again. Would that change and the game save your outpost data and a permanent location when you build an outpost on that plot? Wouldn't that mean a large save file since the game would need to save the entire zone data and anything in it?

I guess we'll see in two months.

I think that it will be possible, particularly pointing to the links that @lysan posted (above); further more one of the backgrounds or professions has a downside in that you can be 'dropped' in on by an enemy who wants you dead.

Persistence-wise, things like prefabs etc do not take up that much space - they'd be a bunch of stats and relationships in a database (or other storage mechanism). Those details are then converted into in-game assets that are then loaded. This is the same for storage of 'parts' or 'things' (like sarnies) - you should be able to store stuff anywhere other than your ship. Well, that's typically how it works. This is speculation on my part but I can't see it being done many other ways.

I'd like to think that the same attention to detail for ships has been applied to bases - I can see a logical connection being able to personalise your living spaces wherever you are - and I feel that BSG would know that that's what a lot of players might want.

I'm 50/50 about outposts, too: It might be that a) you can use one but can't add your own buildings, b) you can use it AND add your own buildings or c) none of the above.
I guess we'll see in two months.
7 weeks and 3 days by my estimates (for standard access). Not like I am counting...

They've said it will be different for different players, and I presume for each new start, but no reason why it should be different if you take off and land in the same place in the same game. Procedural generation should allow it to generate the same scene from the same seed.

I like the planet tech. Looks quite familiar. Wonder how much proc gen it is and how much repeating texture it is. Hope they scaled and rotated it enough.

When Starfield is released, that will mean that I will have 3 games installed on Windows, and 3 reasons to boot into Windows: Starfield, Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous.

I see a theme going on here...

IIRC they said the planets were procgen but then saved as is and then further customized (so you wont have repeated patterns since each planet would have already been reviewed by the dev team)

This is as opposed to what ED does - when you get into an undiscovered system - you get to be the first one to see it being generated - so the first discovery bonus and tags get a new meaning
