AFK credit farm; does it depend on security level?

There is no grey area.
Yes there is. Might want to read up what grey area means - not really forbidden, but also not explicitlly allowed. I think AFK farming fits perfectly in that category.

If they are having a funny day and you ask Frontier directly, they would maybe classify AFK gameplay as "automation". Which is not allowed (Frontier have a clear cut stance on that). There are other things players can do and also do do that would count as automation, but everything is fine as long as we don't talk about it. So I won't do it.

Its done as a cheap short cut to Elite rank, as you say i bet i can make more credits in an hour than an afk boat in 7.

Would you you give me a hint? I had ~ 500 mil in 7 hours. In wing/team It's possible to earn more but not been asleep.

How would one do that. You'd need to engineer for that. And once you're done with that tedious process I doubt you'd need credits anymore.

Some trading routes can generate similar amounts of income, but CMDR Player has to actively play the game... avoid risky NPC interdictions (and eventually human pirates if all that is happening in open), not considering the advantage of sharing stacked wing massacre missions... (either with squadron mates or with alt-accounts).

Yep, lots of engineering. And possibly some Power Play grind for Prismatics.

It probably doesn't even work for gaining Elite rank, or only glacially slowly. If you're deadly, only expert and up count at all for combat rank (and expert gives only 25% XP), and I doubt AFK ships are made to kill higher ranking NPCs. Aren't AFK boats usually parked in low RES sites, so it is rather pointless for rank grinding? I thought it was mostly about bounties and massacre missions.

First of all, not everything that isn't prohibitted is automatically a good thing. Also, this is why I said it was "borderline cheating". It is certainly in a grey area. And it certainly is exploiting game mechanics for personal gains. It can be seen as gaining a competitive advantage, if you are into those sorts of things.

Also maybe I'm a dinosaur, but I turn my computer off when I sleep. Energy consumption, climate change and impending doom and all that.

The holes for AFK should be plugged. If not present already, Frontier should make sure strong enough pirates spawn and destroy AFK boats. It should be shunned by the community, and players utilizing AFK should be named, shamed, ridiculed, called Shirley and be forced to watch televangelists for at least eight hours at a time.

It's just a very silly concept. Play a game by not playing a game. This must be a Millenial-Zoomer thing I just don't understand. Like "lol" and calling strangers "bro".
Its not exactly playing the game though is it?
In other games i play it would be classed as 'botting' and you would be banned.
Either way in my opinion its just not cricket.

Why not acquire a billion billions! (Imagine my best Dr. Evil impression).

mate, you can spin it any way you want. Building and engineering the ship is playing the game. Running your computer playing the game while you sleep is exploiting the mechanics. As a concept, it is interesting (maybe), as a "valid playing style" it's a dud.
Full disclosure: I've not used such mechanics, although the nerd in me has been intrigued by the build concept.. Not moved to the build-a-ship-part, though.
I think your criticism is rather harsh, and I don't mean it disrespectfully.
Named and shamed for utilising existing game mechanics? Then those gankers should be given 2lt of water and left hanging upside-down.
Since it's a "blaze or whatever your own way", this is another way of "progress". Personally, for a main account, I think it's a bit risky, because while your cmdr gains XP and ranks, your own flying experience doesn't advance accordingly, so sooner or later, you'll have some "oops" moment with actual npc fights. For alts, it could be tempting.
And it cannot be called botting. Not unless the player is using some sort of external automation software mechanism to control the ship while AFK.
I'd put it under the "live and let live" category, because it can't and doesn't affect my own progress.
No, it's not actually "playing the game", but I would dare say it's not much different than long supercruise trips to Hutton Orbital.
@Darrack, the part with the televangelists was actually funny! Change it to "during the afk period" and it's got my blessing :D

bruh! no one says bro anymore.

Oh I totally get the intrigued nerd thing. As a build concept, it is interesting.

Well I was poking fun at AFK players, which was supposed to be conveyed by the "Shirley" and "watching Televangelists" part. Guess that backfired on me. Sarcasm and poking fun is hard on the internet ;).

Oh it will backfire. Cases like these are the ideal candidates to end in crying on reddit and calling "cheating" that their Elite pilot in his totally invincible built-from-instructions boat was killed by a Viper because skill gap.

Live and let live maybe, but I will still mock the fluff out of the concept of playing the game by not playing the game. This is Elite, not "War Games".

Erm, that was me. Along with the naming and shaming. And calling them "Shirley" :).

Yeah, it probably is worth remembering that finding the most risk free and low effort solution to an issue is commonly called human nature. As you say, so long as nothing is added to the game by the player to facilitate playing AFK, I'm filing this in the 'things I don't like personally' category.

It is the internet though, so everything is either pornographic or complaining about stuff and I'll get banned here for the former.

Yeah, people can do what they want, and if you want to to AFK farming do it, but for crying out loud don't ask for advice on it. That's practically an invitation to mock and tell them off.

Oh, that's just me? Right. I'll get my coat.
