Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

A SC refugee enjoying Elite in his first week and being continually surprised by all those things that a normal, finished SpaceSim has (and that an eternally incomplete Alpha obviously lacks) with for example; more than 1 star system, changing economy and political situation, a multitude of equippable modules, different types of missions, a sense of player progression and, of course, hours of gameplay without bugs and 30k.

And, by the way, playing at 4k in Ultra settings at 120 fps.

"more enjoyable than many AAA"... yes... sure...
The first video in that series popped up on my recommended yesterday, thought about posting it here too. I only watched first one and wasn't sure how it was going to go honestly, mainly due how I've seen SC faithful approach/view Elite, but I guess it seems he's treating the game with an open mind?

I'm sure CR will come up with some excellent reason for how the Persistent Universe's Whale's peons are able to run around and fix their ships in high g environments after applying maximum fidels to the handwavium generator.
This is the creative genius that came up with pushing a spaceship off a flight deck with spacebulldozer in zero G. I have complete faith he can explain away this one.

You should try salvaging/repair in game it's really fun. If the gameplay is fun and the explanation is bad, no-one care about the explanation.

In other news, I pretty much no longer play ED. Not because it's bad or broken, but because I was bored with it, even in VR (where it really shines). Ditto NMS. I've recently become a bit bored with Valheim too, and somehow can't get into the Sons of the Forest.
Mix it up, always. Grindy games can be taxing but also fantastic when you come back to them after a longer period. For example, Everspace (the first one).

Well, this is one of his answers in that video;
"...ED is so playable, yes playable -- how my gaming standards have been lowered to this level my SC. I should have found this game earlier. Was indeed a bit blinded by all the promises CIG throws at us in SC for such a long time."

Yes, he seems to really like ED, at least its first steps. In any case, as I said in my previous comment, in this world there are varied tastes, and I'm sure there will be hundreds of things about ED that he loves, and hundreds of things that he dislikes, but what seems undeniable is that it's a complete and finished game, something that obviously collides with his experience with SC.

That's why I find it so funny when people say they've been enjoying SC for years at the same level as play an AAA finished game... no, people have been testing SC for years. If that testing also makes you enjoy the game, that's fine, but what it does is test it, make no mistake.

SC doesn't exist as a game yet; there are hardly any missions, no game mechanics, no gameplay loops, no stability, no real sense of progression (what you do has no real impact on your reality or the game's). The sensations that SC can give you are the normal things of an alpha, and that of course can be fun; the "exciting" of trying every x months the new things that are being added to the game, seeing its progression in development, etc... but they are not the sensations that you get when playing a complete and finished game, not by a long shot.

What is not normal is that you experience those sensations of testing an alpha for more than 10 years.

So, for me, comments like "SC is more fun than many finished AAA games" don't make any sense; any game that is finished can be evaluated as a whole, and it can be liked more or less depending on each person who plays it, but at least it offers a real gameplay... SC only offers the "excitement of seeing what's new in the new patch..." and the eternal illusion of seeing it finished someday.

For example; I'm playing and enjoying Space Haven a lot, a game in Early Access for 3 years and, with each new patch (it already has 17 updates), improves a lot and adds many things to the whole game... but it's an absolutely playable game, and your games can be started and ended, so you have the real feelings of a finished game.

But it's in Early Access, and the developers warn you that it's not full complete... but you still get the feeling of playing a true full game. That did not happen in its first versions, but after 3 years in Alpha, now you always have that feeling, although you know that there are still many things to incorporate and that it is not finished yet.

Well, not even that offers you SC, not even close.

So I went through that Shanghai Bar Citizen vid. Here's some minor extra things not mentioned in Camural's vid:

  • They're planning new manufacturers, like the recent 'Mirai'. [IE the brand that made the Fury, with its Chinese slogan which translates as 'FUTURE']
  • They're going to allow communities to 'mod the game for localization reasons' from next patch.

50s - translator guy has been translating SC stuff for 6yrs

CIG intros:
John Crewe [Vehicle Director]
Ian Leyland [Art Director] - [2m50s] Speaks some Mandarin (?). Joined ~9yrs ago. Thanks for contributing to project
Todd Pappy - started 8yrs ago.
Erin Roberts - runs 'development'. Can't make the game without their support.
Tyler Witkins - almost 9yrs

5m50s - Always looking for inspiration for new ship manufacturers (re Shanghai's style etc). Introduced 'Mirai' [IE the Fury]. Looking forward to introducing more manufacturers in the future. [!!].
NB Mirai - https://starcitizen.tools/Mirai - google translates as 'FUTURE' in 'Chinese' :D. Already focusing on Chinese market perhaps?

6m40s - When they do the humanity systems will see architecture with influence from all cultures... [And drops hint about alien civilizations....]

7m+ It's very bright at night in Shanghai... SC moons are reallllly dark. So, night vision? We are looking at different systems. Night vision, infrared. Known issue. Core tech allows 'artificial simulation', but there is a draw distance limitation. The system doesn't have shadowing. Working on a 'GI' solution [?].

8m45s - How do artists do their work? Character term works with a specific shader where they can create 'fixed draw calls and certain loadouts' [?]. Whereas environment team works more like the ship team. 'It's an odd pipeline which is very unique to star citizen'.

11m30s - After beauty, the gameplay system... Recently another game [Starfield] showed off 'space building'. any plans? Yes we do have plans. [Applause]. Something we've been talking about for quite a while. Can wait for Citcon or a bit later to show. We are planning on it. It's very important to our gameplay loops, which includes crafting and building. [He means base building - see below]

13m- Most voted question... BMM? It needs some love, will you give it? Had a team of 5 or 6 artists on it. Hard art style. Unfortunately most of those artists left the company, for various reasons. While rebuilding the team putting them to work on more traditional manufacturers. Chris asks about it every week. As soon as they have the people with the skills will be back on the roadmap.

14m20 - AI language models / GPT-4. Will they be added to NPCs? We've been investigating it for a little while. The issue is with certain programmes they own the rights for what you put in. Need to find a balance of what will work. There are some other programmes than GPT that we've looked at, which do facial as well.

15m - AI Crew? Bigger aim is they do what the player does. Flying, combat, engineering. Idea is you assign roles to them, and they have different skills (just like the people in the audience).

15m30s - Can crew drive my ships? We have to do wingman commands anyway for another game [SQ42]. As for the details, still TBC.

16m15s - Hull C. What's the plan on the 'hulling gameplay'? Uses the 32 SCU crates. Mid-term freight elevators. Until then 'automated loading system'. (IE teleports..]. Have updated the 4 LEO [??] stations. They still have 3 other spacestations to put in at the Jump Points. Hull C are meant for interstellar... Idea is you move between the systems with protection etc

17m40s - Crafting? You saw initial parts in the Vulture. From there building a blueprint, getting the materials, ties in to the base building that we talked about earlier.

18m15s - After PES, players losing flair items. They know about it. Looking into it. Maybe crafting. Maybe insurance. Want $ items to be acquired back. Worried about exploits. Any time or patch? [Tod Papy shakes head a lot]

19m30s - Any news ships planned? Yes... Pioneer. And new big and small ones.

20m10 - Flying in atmo is cool, but problem = 'dropping to your death'. They want to work on. Parachutes? Different gravities. Hangliding? Jetpacks? 'Is that really a thing?'. It could well be a thing. [applause]

21m - What do you like most about SC?
[Crewe] Community. Spaceships. Want to make sure everyone has a spaceship for them.
[Papy] The scale, scope and challenge.
[Ian] Community. Chinese community. Base Building.
[Erin] Watching gamers do something unexpected in the sandbox. Love making changes to support that. Racing. Big sandbox battles. Never intended stuff...
[Tyler] Has seen CIG 'try to embark on new technologies and features'... inventing solutions to things that have never been done. Calls this the largest player event in the world...
If you see us on our phones it's because we're sharing that with excited guys at home. [Erin then spends an age on his phone, flicking about, not taking vids]

27m20s - Plan to make it much easier for all communities to 'mod' the game for localization reasons. Hopes to see that in next patch.

But he hit all the main comedy / drama bits. The whole 5-6 artists on the BMM having left en masse for various reasons, and Crewe not having the experienced devs to hand to work on it. CIG toying with LMMs for both NPC voice and faces, seemingly. All the things coming. (Base building, Pioneer, etc etc). The Hull C being 'Tier -1' in terms of the game being ready for it etc.

So I looked into this because it bugged me. I know for sure 'Mirai' is Japanese for future and they do use chinese characters. It could be the same characters and promounciation in Chinese so I fired up google translate.

Chinese
未来 Wèilái Future

Knowing how Chinese feels about Japan I wonder how this went down when they used the Japanese pronounciation.

Yeah dunno, I just stuck the characters into G-translate via G-images, and it came out as 'Chinese'. Good point on the Japanese link though. Possibly they're not pitching for China per se. Possibly it's a bit of all purpose Asian outreach ¯\(ツ)/¯

The Pioneer? LOL, yeah, that's not happening, unless its perhaps just the ship and not the gameplay for it.

Also, funny to see CIG try and pivot to the eastern audiences, perhaps realizing the western marks are largely tapped out.

They've been sub-million per week for most weeks recently. That's probably not covering or perhaps barely covering their operational costs now they are over 1000 employees.
