Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

For 3.18 PTU a huge amount of people paid a $10 sub to get early access to it, it looks like they are rejiging it so that more people have to sub to gain early access. Previously i think any Concierge level would have been in Wave 1.

New ship sale! TOOL UP FOR SUCCESS!

Deleted ships, meaning not on sale at all anymore? Were those always available or were sold only spot as “limited stock”?

Career kits, finessing CCU chains, and now Subscription for Wave 1 testing screams they're desperate for cash.

The 110M$/year burnrate divided by 45$ starter packages infers they need 2.2 million new players every year.
They have 4M752k063 Star Citizens at this point in time; accrued over a decade of marketing.
No way they can get 2.2 million new people to start playing a space game each year.

So they need to milk the existing players.
Good luck with that -- they seem miffed since 3.18!

Source your popcorn now, this is going to get good!

This is not how CIG said anything would work. Feels like a bait'n'switch.

It´s not a bait and switch, at least not anymore anyways. SC is already a released product and CIG can do as they please. It may have indeed been a bait and switch back then when SC released in Early Access in 2016, but after that release CIG owes nothing to anyone anymore. They basically start with a clean slate and can do as they please with our money. Just another perk of being released.

The time window to complain about that 2016 release is closing pretty fast though, especially if you have accepted the TOS after that, although there is still probably a case for CIG not being very straightforward with it at the time.

CIG has had tons of 3rd parties working with them from day 1. Not really unusual no?

They cut back on them a lot when they grew the company and the whole Illfonic thing messed up. Outsourcing now, as they are growing but income is dropping... well, make of that what you will.

Assuming that Chinese 3rd party rumor is true, there could be lots of ways to understand it. It could be that CIG profits are really going well and they can afford the growth, or it could mean the opposite. That profit margins are crap and labor over there is much cheaper than in LA, Manchester or Frankfurt. This second scenario would imply some layoffs in those studios though. It could also be a condition part of a new investment deal by Chinese corporations.

In other words, no idea. The only weird part would be the secrecy about it.

In other news: a company earning 600 M for not releasing a single game, with access to thousands of testers who are paying to test it, is unable to pay for game servers, so they introduce a battle pass. If this is the economics of Star Citizen, what is the Que Pasa economy going to look like once Tony, the simulation whisperer, delivers?
Lets hope you wouldn't have to pay them to uninstall the game eventually.

The salt continues to flow....

Sorry, responses from Zyloh and Jake are exclusive to wave 1 and wave 2 participants. You will have to wait for wave 3. Thank you for your understanding

:D

Bonus threads:

CIG with sketchy advertising again, talking about the Reclaimer having a tractor beam... that doesn't exist.

And...

Cue people saying "You can't compare them"

Although top comment hits the nail on the head:

Larien makes "AAA" dev's look bad in general

ChatJ3PT must be working overtime at the moment!

Here's a sample:

600 million and 10 years to set up a company and develop two games, one being an MMO, that are bigger in Scope, scale and fidelity than most games on the market is not as much as you think it is. There are plenty of single player games approaching those budgets and taking as long from established studios, starfield being one example.

The fact you’re standing by your comment that CIG have achieved nothing really reflects poorly on you.

Definitely feels like marketing exploring new routes...

(And if the funding tracker is even vaguely accurate they're def losing steam at the moment).

But those 4mil Citizens are just registered players accounts, not paying backers. (Attachment rate is around 50%, going by past CIG statements).

So all they have to do is convince ~2m of us to do more than just gawp and giggle ;)

Well to be fair they are not even the same game genre, and one is a turned based RPG the other is a 3d twitch shooter. We can still compare the competence of management in both cases, and how Larian released the GOAT RPG in 6 years with content so packed you can spend hours in each location and with unprecedented freedom of action. Oh and it's not their only release since CiG started SC and SQ42: in that time frame they also released 3 full games (also costly RPGs): Divinity Dragon Commander, Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2. So 4 full games, all of which have positive reviews, the last 2 of which are considered among the GOAT of the genre. Meanwhile CiG managed to squander a record amount of backer money and only produce a quicky patched together demo level that would not survive proper reviewing.
