Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

I am inclined to buy over Steam. I don't really want to open a MS account.

As an XB console owner / user, i already have an MS account.
if you are an Window 11 user, and not a very technical one, you already have to login in Windows 11 with a MS account (sure, there is an workaround to navigate around that limitation, but still, most people are not technical savvy enough to do that)

Win10 for me still. Not too keen on Win11 either. I have to deal with it at work and it's a real pain, imo. Not quite as bad as 8, but up there.

So was I till last week when my new gaming laptop arrived.
Now, after 1 week of using w11 i have to admit that i find it weird to have a left aligned start menu. Crazy, isn't it?
(i still prefer the familiarity of w10, but yea...)
Strangely enough, after using Win11 since it was released and hated losing the familiar drop down context menus and the like...I tried recently to go back to a win10 UI via an external app but still utilising the best features of Win11...I just couldn't work with it, even after years spent on Win10. I gave up and went back to the standard Win11 UI.

For gaming though, Win11 is far better than Win10 ever was. The UI can be strange and almost clunky compared to the familiarity and ease of Win10, but it's well worth making the change up after all that 🤷‍♂️

As for the MS account thing, I transferred my old Xbox live gold account to gamepass ultimate when that was released...for £1. I even got 2 years of gamepass ultimate for free with the accumulated Xbox live gold subs I had sitting, so it was a great deal for me. The MS gamepass ultimate account now covers my Xbox live account and my PC subs, all through the one MS account I already use to sign in to Windows when I fire up my PC...simplicity in itself.

All I need now is for Sony to bite the bullet and sign up with gamepass ultimate... and that would get rid of another annual sub for Playstation plus on the PS5

Just as an aside for interested parties who bought on gamepass...the pre-loading hype machine has begun :)

i so hope it will not be an unplayable bug ridden mess for the first 4 months.
I have a strange suspicion that with Microsoft's (and AMD's) involvement, plus being given the extra months to spend on polishing, internal playtesting etc, that Starfield may be the one to break the Bugthesda image. Between Xbox game studios and Bethesda, they seem to be pulling all the stops out for this one.

...I'll also be quite prepared to eat my own words in the eventuality it isn't :D

I kinda hope it is, otherwise I might not be able to resist the temptation to buy it before I actually have time to play it, which would result in my life being a "not getting important things done" mess.

The more I hear about this game, the more I suspect it will end my RL as I know it, LOL. I usually don't have much of a RL in the dead of winter, so if I can just hold off my purchase until then.. 😵‍💫

I had a look on the MS app and it’s offering me a two week trial of Game Pass for a quid, so I think I’ll wait until the day before early release, sign up, get the pre-download, and see if the Upgrade pack code works.

Goddangit. Can you not leave the minions alone? They need to test if it's good enough to buy for me!

The synthesis is probably the "intended" one. The others are control and destroy. Actually there is a 4th one which I think went in with the updated endings, that is probably the "wrong" one you mean.
ME was very popular - the end of the trilogy pretty much cemented the end of the franchise. Which is good against milking stuff to death but bad when people would totally buy more stuff of that kind. BW "plans" to have another go at the franchise, but honestly - their talent isn't what it used to be and their output bears the seal of AAA: flashy bling - questionable gameplay quality.

I meant "wrong" as in "What my Shepard would have done". I basically took a wrong turn in the end and, well, decided a different fate for the galaxy than intended 🤦‍♂️
As for Mass Effect Andromda: I bought it for 5 bucks and it was good enough for 5 bucks. I'm glad I did not pay a cent more on it. Compared to ME Trilogy, the characters were pretty boring, downright annoying or even contradicted ME lore. The "exploration&colonization" theme was fun at first, until I saw how superficial it actually is. Anyway, I finished the game and I'm sure there won't be any second playthrough.

Good stuff. The more I read, the more I believe that Starfield is the space game that will replace Elite for me. I will probably need some mods to turn the (apparently) arcade space flight shooter into something more Sim-like and I'm happy. I just hope it's not going to be such a buggy mess like Fallout 76 or Odyssey

This year I finally finished the ME Trilogy for the first time. I accidentally "picked" the wrong ending though.
If this accident comprised shooting the annoying kid hologram, or telling him where he can stuff his contrived choices (options added with the patch that fleshed out the ending), I would not say you picked the "wrong" ending; It is what I choose on purpose, and it's where the entity that speaks through the imaged kid drops the mask/heartstring puller. :9

(EDIT: Ok, saw your post, above; So more shuffling the wrong way, than clicking something and getting an unexpected result. :7 )

Before they made the patch, I commented on Bioware's Mass Effect forum, that I kind of liked how the Ending-o-Tron 3000 speeches from Deus Ex: Human Revolution wasn't so much an epilogue, as the protagonist, Adam Jensen, rationalising his choice to himself, to suppress his feelings of guilt, and I persist in thinking this is also pretty much exactly what the added slideshows after each ME3 ending is. -None of that stuff happens; Shepard becomes a new Reaper overmind no matter which of the three proffered choices you pick - just with different player preconceptions twisted and used by the Reapers to worm their way of thinking into your head; And the whole "Crucible" macGuffin was yet another Reaper plant -- they made us waste precious resources and attention on building the very instrument used to harvest us.

Probably wrong, but that is my head-canon. :p

It has long been wondered whether ME3 was a deliberate act of: "torch the franchise and run", to prevent an endless string of ever blander management-mandated sequels, but I thought it could be kind on cute if a following game had a trio of Dragon Age: Origins-like introduction sections, where companions had to snap Reaper Shepard out of the one of the three dream-world options, which they had created for themselves. :p

...others will of course point to the "breath" stinger scene (...which plays if one choose destroy, and have a high enough war assets count), and opine that it proves "destroy" to be the right choice... They can have their head-canon just as much as I can have mine. :7

This is where my confusion lies 😅

Someone else asked the same question here and has got yes/no as well.

Edit: thanks Northpin, I’m hoping that will be the case and the expansion upgrade code will be valid for PC 👍
XBox Play Anywhere is described here: https://www.xbox.com/en-GB/games/xbox-play-anywhere

As far as I can see, that's fairly explicit that you buy the game once and it can be played on XBox and Windows.

True enough, I checked on the website too since the question if I already owned the digital premium version on Xbox after buying the PC version still nagged at me, seemingly it's covered...that goes for DLC or season passes etc too according to the MS Play Anywhere site. All editions of Starfield are included in the Play anywhere games list...but only the digital versions.

Edit: I just did what I should have done several hours ago before typing in that load of drivel in the completely uninformed post I put up previously...walked through to the living room, fired up my Xbox and looked. Yup, Starfield and the premium edition content I paid for on PC is right there in the downloads list...so I pre-loaded that as well :)

Aye, my confusion arose from the physical upgrade item sale page on Amazon - the digital upgrade clearly states Xbox/PC but the physical one only has Xbox listed. I was thinking that the PC version might be a limited/exclusive thing like the merch box & smart watch, and only available from certain places.

I had another look at the upgrade description picture and it shows Xbox/PC for the steelbook so it looks like I’m good to go 😁

Many thanks to everyone who took the time to answer 👍

I've a few questions if anyone can help me out/point me in the right direction.

It was December last year I logged on to Windows; I have Windows 10 knocking around somewhere, bought in May 2021. Will I still be able to use that? I ask because I will be getting a new laptop before the end of the year and my 6 year old laptop with a GTX 1080 clearly won't cut the grade.

Also I bought the smart watch version so does that mean I will launch the game differently and not via Steam?

Can't wait to play this even though it won't be on launch day.

Thanks in advance folks!
