When it comes to Starfield, I keep being told what it isn't...or what it should or shouldn't be by other folk who (seemingly) bought into it with a heavy hint of rose coloured myopia involved.

I bought in early because with my previous experience of Bethesda games, I almost knew exactly what it was going to be (warts and all) before I handed my cash over... turns out I was right...I'm playing it like I would any other Bethesda game and I'm loving every minute :)
What I expected: Skyrim/Fallout in space with modding.
What I got: Skyrim/Fallout in space with modding.
Level of happiness: 9/10 so far. (-1 point for no innovations to the typical Bethesda formula, at least so far I didn't come across any).

People often talk about what a game isn't rather than what it is. Its rather strange.

On the BG3 forums people are lamenting the apparently missing content, while failing to acknowledge the fact that there is a ton of content there to be enjoyed. Even some people going as far as to say they can't enjoy the game knowing some content didn't make the cut.

People are strange.

Even from a distance the game looks amazing, except for one crucial part, and one of the reason that i went with Game Pass over Steam. They deliberately removed DLSS support.
For the first time in gaming history we have tools to make gameplay enjoyable with out emtying your bank account on PC upgrades, and yet they go and remove it. I just moraly can't support this kind of malpractise.
I will definately pick it up on Steam, later on when there are lots of Mods made and at heavy discount.

DLSS is exclusive to Nvidia cards, while FSR is available to all cards. Nvidia's Apple tactics make me sick. If anyone is engaged in malpractice it's Nvidia.
Apart from that I think Starfield is an excellent game. :)

Nvidia didn't made Starfield. So you are barking at the wrong tree there.
DLSS was so easy to add that modders did it in 1 day, yet Bethesda didn't. That's why they only get 10$ from me.

So that means I'll have to remove RDR2 from the drive then. I haven't checked if my CPU is enough - I just assume it is. I run a 1070 Ti which is coasting the minimum I believe, but I hear people run OK with less. I have no idea what my CPU is. I could also toss DCS from the drive.
But going from what I hear here it sounds I would enjoy it. Could be a worthy successor to Mass Effect. I heard the magic skill tree is a bit like biotics.
Who did the voice acting, though.

Are you saying AMD made Starfield? Sorry, but your argument doesn't make sense to me.
Anywho. Great game. :)

Sort of, yes :)
Specifically, Bethesda had AMD engineers involved in the optimization of Starfield (edit: this is sort of a payback since nvidia is usually the bad dog here with their exclusive technologies)

On the topic of DLSS, there is finally a non-paywalled DLSSG mod available: https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/761

I can confirm it works. Getting upwards of a hundred frames per second in New Atlantis at 4k ultra, with 100% render scale on my 4090. No latency or noticeable motion artifacts either.

low latency mode was required at 1 (not off or ultra)

I believe NVIDIA's low latency mode only works in DX9-11 titles. Starfield is DX12 and the the setting probably should be left on auto.

I'll just have to not think about what those ini files might taken away. Also its probably not an issue again to anyone but under the minimum spec like me, but where you can tell the difference between ultra gtao and possibly shadows is in the toys on the constellation clubhouse. Naturally id prefer to suffer than not see that eye candy.

Also hilarious... i downloaded the art book and clicked on video tour.. and went "oh thats how its supposed to look".... /facepalm

At some point there isn't much to do other than upgrade one's hardware.

Also, if you come across any panels marked as cutaway, you can use your mining tool to cut them away just as in Odyssey.

You can cut them away with any weapon. It's also possible to move some objects around in the environment, though far from all of them, and figuring out which ones move and which ones don't is mostly guesswork.

One of the most disappointing things about Odyssey is how static the environments are. Starfield is quite a bit better, but still quite far short of what I'd like.

For the first time in gaming history we have tools to make gameplay enjoyable with out emtying your bank account on PC upgrades, and yet they go and remove it.

Not even close to the first, nor the worst, example of such a thing.

Starfield's performance problems don't stem from a lack of official support for a propriety upscaler or frame interpolator, they stem from it being a Bethesda game, running on what is essentially a decade-old engine.

Nvidia didn't made Starfield. So you are barking at the wrong tree there.

NVIDIA could have opened up DLSS, or any of their proprietary features, years ago, but they haven't, because doing so would reduce the incentive to purchase their latest hardware.

There is an enormous double standard in taking offense at Bethesda/Microsoft/AMD for preventing the official DLSS support, while not taking offense at NVIDIA agressively pushing a propriety pushing a proprietary feature set in an attempt to monopolize the discrete GPU market.

I expect corporations to play dirty, and for their customers to get shafted in the process (the ironic thing about all the fanpersons on any 'team' is that if they ever win, they'll lose). AMD, being the underdog more often than not, just hasn't had as many opportunities to let their corporate evil shine through.

I'm definitely enjoying the procedural generation in this game. I love the fact that I can set down on random location on a world, and explore it over multiple sessions... even the lifeless ones. It's everything I'd hoped that planetary exploration in Elite Dangerous would be.

I'm also noticing certain features, even minor ones, aren't finalized until you actually set eyes on them... for good or ill. Got killed by a mine while trying to do a stealthy clean out of pirates occupying the exterior of an abandoned facility. Turned the corner and "BOOM!" Upon reload, I consumed all the non-status food in my inventory, turned the corner again, and there it was: a robot I could program to help clear them out.

Pity that I'd already killed them all, thanks to my new semi-automatic Maelstrom, stealth, and a high perch with decent cover. I always play a sniper in these kind of games, and this was the first semi-auto rifle I'd found. It also has plenty of ammunition available to it. Feeling bold, I decided to clear out the interior. It went relatively well until the final boss. Many stealthy take downs, and only one getting swarmed once, with relatively little damage.

That boss fight, though. Probably half a dozen pirates with decent cover, with Sarah and I pinned down within a longish corridor only the edge of a door midway to cover, and a rack of explosive bottles nearby. Plus they had quite a few grenades. To make things even more interesting, Sarah kept leaving cover and wandering into my line of fire! Ah, Bethesda companion AI still haven't improved much! :(

Took a couple medi-packs, but eventually whittled them down enough to finally rush the door. What the boss had made the whole ordeal worthwhile:

There's so much synergy in one tiny package here!!! 💃

Just to bring me down a notch, my best spacesuit and helmet aren't the rare or epic items I've found so far. They're common ones I looted off the pirates outside. And so, in the best Bethesda tradition, I feel like a rummage store reject:

The Pirate Sniper outfit, appropriately enough. It's a pity that we can't dress up as the enemy to fool them, though at least I also don't have to worry about getting mistaken for one in civilized space either. :)

Amen, brother.

If your adversary plays dirty, then you need to play dirty if you want to win. Not sure it's evil, just dirty. :)

I don't see Bethesda and AMD/Nvidia/Intel on the same plate. AMD/Nvidia/Intel provide the tools, and it's up to Bethesda to use them or not. If Bethesda wants to play favorites with AMD over Nvidia/Intel - they will pay the price by dissatisfaction from their customers.
Must i take offense at Nvidia because they come up with inovative ideas, while AMD is just trying to copy it? If AMD came up with FSR 3 first i wouldn't want for games to stop using this inovative technology just to appease the other side.

We should embrace Nvidia for pushing so hard for progress so fast. Just imagine, only 4 years ago we had neither FSR or DLSS. We were basically living in The Dark Ages:whistle:.

Spent a few more hours refurbishing the Frontier...spent all my hard earned cash on it too but it's now a proper frigate...internal everything from armoury to workshop and a captains cabin...and now with 760t out of the 1144t being shielded cargo bays for the 'delicate' items...and a scan jammer for added measure :)

Love this ship building tool...

Looks like one of the Ecliptic Bayonets I recently captured an sold. Damn, I totally missed the workshop option, captain' cabin etc. in the shipbuilder....or do I need to skill Starship engineering to unlock those options? Joining Vanguard unlocked a number of weapons and ships at the vendor as well
