This is just a thought. You know the community confuses me greatly at times. One minute it's war over birds and mammals then we get moments like these where we ask for squid.
I used to work there a loooooong time ago - I did take the kids there fairly recently though and it’s changed a fair bit (including the owners - it’s now SeaLife) since i worked there - major changes especially on the ground floor and a saltwater croc in an uncomfortably small area (though they don’t really need a lot of space)… They still have giant cuttlefish though - always one of my favourites.Dang, I haven't been there in so long that I don't even remember what it's like. Gotta go back at some point, love aquariums.
It's the "Once we get aquariums" that gets me. I didn't realise people were still taking that as a given. You know the community confuses me greatly at times. One minute it's war over birds and mammals then we get moments like these where we ask for squid.
to be fair, squid are hella coolYou know the community confuses me greatly at times. One minute it's war over birds and mammals then we get moments like these where we ask for squid.
So which would you prefer? Colossal or Giant?to be fair, squid are hella cool
To be fair, the huge pools of water needed for pinnipeds, penguins, and even hippos and crocodilians also require that same level of care and maintenance. I know people like to incorporate "natural bodies of water" into their in-game aquatic habitats, but that is frankly bonker and super unrealistic in the majority of cases. Pollutants and pH variants harm more than just fish (and of course pinnipeds and penguins are far healthier in saltwater; better for their skin, eyes, everything).honestly I would much rather aquariums be their own planet game or in a planet zoo sequel because the whole place walls and fill to a line system will not work well in aquariums which in real life require so much care and water maintenance to run and generally have a very different vibe to a zoo.
That’s all true but, in general, animals that can extract oxygen from water are more vulnerable to changes in water chemistry (and other variables) than animals that breathe air because the membranes that allow oxygen to diffuse also allow chemicals to diffuse (as well as increasing the effect of other variables like temperature)…. Also, larger bodies of water are less likely to experience rapid chemical / physical (e.g., temperature) change that is the greatest risk (a lot of animals can withstand a gradual change but can’t withstand a rapid one)….To be fair, the huge pools of water needed for pinnipeds, penguins, and even hippos and crocodilians also require that same level of care and maintenance. So as it stands, aquariums could in some way work within the current build system. We'll probably never see them, of course, but it could work.
I prefer the Larsonian squid:@DarthQuell which do you prefer? Colossal Squid or Giant Squid?
Nice.I prefer the Larsonian squid:

Actually, seriously though, either or. Both squids are nice. I guess maybe giant squid, only for its popularity
OK.So I’ll treat a thought experiment like a thought experiment, I’ll go with giant squid. It’s the more famous of the two, and I loved it in Endless Ocean 2, Abzu, and Beyond Blue
That’s a part of it. These guys would need an absolutely huge tank. But the size isn’t the same issue as the edges/ corners, great whites like open ocean like these guys. The great whites would bump against tank walls and slowly kill them, these squids would probably do the same. Not to mention you would have to replicate the cold and dark environment they live in, and I don’t even know how you would replicate the ocean pressure they live in.How come Colossal Squid & Giant Squid can't do well in captivity? Is it because the tank isn't big enough for them?
Make sure to like this thread
Yes but Colossal Squid have the biggest eyes in the ocean so I guess they could see where they are going. That’s a part of it. These guys would need an absolutely huge tank. While you aren't wrong with white sharks there is a little more to it. For one, it's mostly juveniles they attempt to keep and those are coastal. Then when white sharks get any stress, their digestive tract shuts down. Lastly, Aquarium glass is basically catnip to their ampullae of Lorenzini. They get a weak signal off it, and keep coming back to it. The ones that adapt is because they got bored with it.That’s a part of it. These guys would need an absolutely huge tank. Why not just place something on the glass inside the tank so when the squid sees it, it will know not to go nearer there. While you aren't wrong with white sharks there is a little more to it.
