Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Jared Huckster was so quietly menacing in the video - the way he turned to the camera and almost whispered in that high pitched, forcibly calmed voice ”Hello… it’s me again…” There seemed to be a sort of contained rage in the “we don’t do ‘when‘ questions anymore” statement, as if he was on the verge of snapping. And then sort of fizzled out after “things will be when they will be” (qué será, será?), like he was so livid he’d lost the ability to form a grammatically correct sentence.

Sounds like a challenge :)

Ah you mean they replaced all doors, ladders and stairs, NPCs, collision detection, barman AI (I'm sure there's one somewhere in Starfield), item handling, (and I could continue for a while here) with loading screens ? ;)

Did you really criticize the NPC AI of a finished, working game ? Do you really want us to post examples of that absolutely incredible AI in Star Citizen ? Or maybe T-posing place holder assets is the end game in AI we obviously cannot understand ?
We need to invent a Starfield comparison bingo for the unwashed...seemingly, they've all got bored mentioning every other released game (there has been hundreds of course) over the last 11 years that they seem to take delight in comparing to the dumpster fire :)

I suspect Disco has been whined at by upper management into bringing up the subject...Ci~G are bleeding cash and backers like someone just blew a hole in the wall for them all to escape through :)

Is it just me, or is the RSI website/Spectrum having problems at the moment?

EDIT: Finally started working for me

In other news...

Someone in comments reminding that while there are alien ships, there are still no aliens in game.

When will CIG get around to adding the aliens and their systems? 2250 too early?

I've already added modded behaviour to the NPC's in Starfield...mine are a tad more spicy and intelligent than vanilla. All this before the creation kit has even been released.

I'm currently running around 25 mods in Starfield...a mixture of all sorts from planetary physics, character textures, totally redesigned ship and character HUD and player inventory, AI behaviour and actual game engine physics like the removal of planetary tiles and some transitional loading screens.

Currently, Starfield has over 2,700 free mods available on the Nexus less than a fortnight after release (magic word right there)...including one which introduces a form of supercruise between planets in a system. I'll say it again...this is all before the official creation kit has been released and the floodgates truly open. The vanilla game will be practically unrecognisable in 6 months with the players rebuilding the game the way they want it...

Pity we still can't say any of those things about star citizen after 11 years... it's stagnant and broken and will stay in a state of perpetually broken stagnation whilst Ci~G continue to faff around preparing for the endless cycle of perennial ship sales instead of developing a game 🤷‍♂️
Good for you if you can correct what should be in the game. The reality is that Bethesda have released a half baked game and for them to add what you have added, they will need 2 or 3 years more of dev. And it's still a solo game. Call me when the multi mod will be in to see how all your mods will 'work' once the multi mode will be activated.

Dammit, you've reminded me I've gotta do an aliens vid at some point. So much funny stuff out there...

(PS I don't mean to upset anyone but the AI engineer in charge of the Vanduul left in January. Probably means SQ42 is ready ;))

No, they released the game they wanted to release, let us know when CIG does the same.............

Ho, explain to me what is false about SF in my sentence ?
I correct the "size" part. Each "map" you land on has multiple "tiles" (I was too quick on this part). The size of a "map" is a lot more than 1kmx1km which is the size of a "tile" but it's still limited to a certain amount of tiles (I can't find the exact measure) and is just a tiny portion of the planet.
Did you just ask me what's wrong and then correct yourself on one of the wrong things? 😆
Also:
Biomes aren't random, they're proc-gen'd based on the planet type and landing location, just as the game informs you.
And more than 4 POIs per map.
But sure, you got nothing wrong 😂

How long until we get other narratives like
  • Working NPCs with personalities and deep quest lines are bad, players should make their own content
  • Ship modularity is bad, players should have 50 ships for different purposes
  • Extensive loot and crafting systems are bad, players should gear up for success instead
  • More than a few star systems is bad because no-one explores
🍿

So, why the press is not massively reviewing the game ? That's what they do when a game is released
Because for some reason they are giving CIG a pass.

Early access reviews will be done at our discretion

As with all coverage, Polygon editorial staff will make any final determinations regarding what we do or do not cover. It is the opinion of Polygon reviews staff that a product being sold may be fairly subjected to critique and determination of value to our audience.

Polygon will always endeavor to be fair in our review process for early access products. As with all releases, we do not take the efforts and work required to make a game lightly, regardless of the size of the team making it. But we also will not take the time and resources of our audience for granted.

Priority will be given to games with a broad or at least perceptible amount of popular interest as determined and decided by Polygon staff. We will also try to focus attention on smaller titles we feel our audience would be interested in.

Why do you review games that are in Early Access or Open Beta?

It’s important to recognize that both “beta” and “early access” mean different things to different games – in some cases it’s a small slice of a game that’s used as a technical test, whereas for many others (such as wildly popular games like Fortnite and Minecraft) it’s the full experience, costs money, and can even exist for years with that label.

Considering that nuance, our policy is that a game is eligible for review if all or the vast majority of its content is available to the public and/or a game maker is charging a significant price for access or for microtransactions within it, regardless of whether they consider it to be the “finished” product. If only some of the content is included but the core gameplay is available, we may opt instead for a Review in Progress format, which may or may not include a score based on the question, “If We Had To Score It Now.”

Under the above criteria, they should have reviewed Star Citizen. The more pertinent question is why have they not?

I think it was almost worthy of the Luke Skywalker “every word of what you just said was wrong” meme 😁

Skybox planets - not landable directly and have no collision detection but they are models that you can fly to using console commands and apparently have proper orbital stuff going on (there’s a nice vid in this post by Cosmo)
Planet tiles - 8x8km and apparently contiguous with neighbouring tiles as tested here.
Biome - as described on the planet map, proc gen’d the same for all players but with unique POIs.
POIs - more than 4 as you’ve said.

My guess is that some of those are under the wrong impression SC is still a crowdfund project when in reality SC revenues are for the most part regular sales of a product sold as is since it went early access around 2016, if not earlier. And a few of them also probably honestly think SC is in such a sorry state that it does not even warrant a review and do not want to dignify it with one.

Yes, I was wrong on the data 1kmx1km, doesn't change the fact that you are in a limited map.

You are true, for 1000 planets you will land for each piece of map on the biome assigned to the zone (1 to 5-6 biomes by planet). This biome will be one of the 10 biomes existing in game. So once you have seen each one of them (only 10 different biomes), every planet will look the same appart the skybox.
And for the number of POI, if it's not 4, it is 5 ? or 6 ?
