Am I getting too old but is the new content too difficult to access?

Greetings,
after few months staying away from ED and playing Starfield and Cyberpunk 2077 expansion I slowly getting temptation to jump back. I have only limited AXI experience and used mostly unshielded clipper with new multis for visiting Thargoid systems. Any advices regarding new stuff added by Update 17?
Spire sites are amazing - but might be challenging.
Multis advised, as, unbeleiveably, Orthrus can zero Guardian weapons with just one pulse!
If you have the Caustic sinks unlocked they are worth putting on, as is the shutdown field neutraliser.
Banshees are brilliant at shutting down your ship if situational awareness slips...

The spires themselves are worth landing on and getting out and doing stuff in your Artemis suit - I take a SRV , park it, then use it to jump off the platform, then do some sniffing around for more new mats.

There is even a nice bit of jumping around to do, just be aware, it is a long way down if you misjump...

I take a SRV
I think have read something about kind of "safe spot" for parking SRV ... any hint? I have both scarab and scorpion, is one better choice? At surface stations there usually were SRVs destroyed from thargoid smaller ships ...

.. I have artemis and some other suits too with jump boost, guess this will come handy :)

And spires locations? ... is possible find them via map or use sources like Inara? (not sure if there is such info)

.... I have unlocked sinks and neutraliser, I was once in Titan centre, but I felt there kind of lack of skills to stay there longer time comfortably :)

There is allegedly 'safe parking' in the new Barnacles - as there is on the 'petals' of the spires. Either are good in the sites, apparently, I took a Scarab for the longer lasting thrust when 'flyving', and their faster top speed.

They are in the 'green' systems on the map of Thargoid territory, I believe - although Inara may have the locations of the Barnacle Matrix sites, which are currently Spires - although apparently 3 have already been shuit down this week.

Shamefully, I didn't look at your build until after posting - then saw you already had them!

You may get better advice from "AX experts" here - I only play the game for fun, so have been known to use a Viper IV with ModShards, just because I can, but AXI have "expert" builders who play seriously.

Kind of more like a safe-ish spot. It will be obvious once you visit. There are a clump of what we shall call thargoid trees near one of the super barnacles that affords a great deal of cover and you can fit your srv into it.

I spent around 12 hours playing in / over the new Spire sites without any game issues. Including with the Buur group where there were 20+ players present making mayhem, so stability appears reasonable.

I am not sure - but I think the Enhanced AX multis are just a buy, but, seeing as I had them unlocked at release (along with most of the other tools) I cannot remember if any 'special' mats were required for some. I do remember that the pulse neutraliser and Caustic Sinks required spending time in the very space that the tools were designed to make less dangerous... The Caustic Sinks are very useful for playing in the Spire sites, too.

That sounds really promising. Last time I played, I even went into Solo and things were still a mess. Seems people in different regions had very different experiences back then, but hopefully your experience is more the norm now.

I had some of those AX Multi's not bad at all. I did some work to unlock some special weapons too - I forget which ones, but I had to gain rep with a faction, and doing something else to gain access. However, I suffered from a "can't gain rep" bug, so gave up. I went in with what I had, killed some Interceptors - dunno if it counted, but they went POP and it was just me around - AX allies would ALWAYS run away after a minute or so, which was a pain. I did an Anaconda build, the idea being I'd be the slow tank, dealing solid damage and also offering repairs / decontamination, while others could better focus fire. Never really worked out lol.

Sigh I just wish we could get this stuff without being almost forced to fail first. I like to go into a situation prepared knowing I'm not puts me off. I still roleplay as if death really means something. Likely why I only have four deaths total in game, ALL due to game bugs. Makes me excessively cautious, where a do or die attitude likely better fits the game, due to lack of consequences. My skill level degrades quickly when I don't play for a bit, so I have to fail (aka likely die) to attempt to get the things that'd help me not die. ED does have a funny way of doing things at times, though I don't play any other online games currently, so maybe it's normal.

The only other MMO type game I played a lot, albeit years ago, had a fairly healthy economy where players could trade materials. Sell to make money, buy to save grind. Worked pretty well. The thing would glitch out every so often, and you'd lose stuff, but generally it was ok. Talking WoW, back in the early 2010's. Hit level 90, instantly got bored, didn't renew my subscription. Never went back.

Btw: is it true that people go into the Maelstroms to gather materials, knowing (and indeed planning) they will die, respawning at a station with the Matierlals they collected? I assume the stuff we need is Matierals (not lost on death?) rather than Cargo, which we do lose? I've not been brave enough to venture in (unprepared, as mentioned) in my current state to see. I thought that materials collected didn't get lost on death. However, I did notice that I had far less of certain Guardian Materials (I was pretty much full) after my last death, but I'd not yet used said materials on new weapons. Glitch? Something weird going on regardless...

As an aside, I'm sure a lot of this content is better in a group. Indeed, group players have gotten MASSIVE bonuses for ages now. 50 mill mission? Well it's 50 mil EACH and 75% less difficult if you bring three friends. Coordinating with other players has always been a mission in its self. Even my regular wingmate - we had similar schedules - would often struggle. He doesn't play any more. Last time I did do a group mission - a cargo hauling one - it glitched out. I got paid, but my wingmate did not - didn't bother again.

welcome to space? It's big and empty. This just further fuels the "I dont think elite is for you" claim.
I dont think games should be also empty and big, why making them in the first place, why recreate nothingness of the universe... Games are made to fill with imagination what is usually unknown and yet to discover. This is what elite odyssey should have done to their 1:1 milky way, fill in some imaginary blanks. They have done it with some imaginative xeno threat. Or are they as real as it gets for a 1:1 milky way, just as the empty planets?

My regular group quit after the wild goosechase FD sent us on about the lost whatsherface and the thargoids. FD wasted our time knowningly letting us chase leads they KNEW went nowhere. That was the final straw for them. So now, I struggle to find anything interesting.
Go trade, Boring as heck.
Go explore. Been there, done that, and procedural planets pretty much all look alike.
Oh, new thragoid story. Ok, oh wait its 1 page every 3 months and YOU aren't allowed since its increasingly geared toward the large groups. Kind of reminds me of everquest where they thought people actually enjoyed being the beat up underdog.

The playerbase optimized out one interesting aspect. Can't blame them. Skipped U16 entirely and I see I missed nothing. That should be telling.

U17 came out and I jumped in hoping for a return to something interesting. What are these spires? Well it turns out you have to hunt for them with inadequate tools. Landables in a thargoid control system that has an ammonia atmosphere. You CAN'T mix search criteria, so its manually looking at each one.
Find one, cool. Poke around for two days and then find out, the community has already found a way to erase that content in quick order. So you are likely to have to do the manual search over and over. It takes a lot of time and time is precious. Oh, BTW, absolutely nothing in the game tells you about these. You pop in and have no idea any of this exists.

Seems to be a theme. Waste player's time. I'm sure they mean well. Elite Dangerous is FD's darling and it looks very cool.

I used to be a huge fan. Very tolerant of the quirks of the game.

The group I play with includes USA, Europe and good ole blighty - teaming up and remaining through the play session (which can be several hours) has been good for a while, with this week being particularly resilient connections. Get-out clause: We may just be fortunate?
AX allies would ALWAYS run away after a minute or so, which was a pain.
Yep, a couple of NPCs shout "We got your back" as they speed off in the opposite direction!
As an aside, I'm sure a lot of this content is better in a group.
Honestly - yes, unreservedly - but, again, biased as the group I'm with have played together often, so know we get along and understand each other... mostly...
What do you mean the community has found a way to erase Thargoid spires?
It seems that Spire sites on the outskirts of the influence area of the Titam can be eradicated by collecting pods... Yeah... Don't ask!

Wait, they become dormant? What does "eradicated" means in gameplay terms?
I'm under the impression they go away...
Perhaps one of the AXI group will drop in with an accurate update - I'm under the impression that Spire sites have dropped from 45 to 42 this week as a result of collecting a lot of pods.
It does remain to be seen if they 'pop up' again next week, I gather.

I thought the systems with the matrix sites, now spires, were hand-of-god'ed back after they were turned with the new pod mechanic? It seemed to me that that was an error in the first place and that Frontier corrected that manually?

Oh, I missed that. Wasn't sure if @BDelacroix meant taking over these systems before U17 dropped, but they were put under Thargoid control again for the update.

edit: Ninja'd by Helmut.

isn't this what also lead to the situation of carriers ending up in goid controlled systems, because they manually turned the systems but forgot to move the carriers?

I think that is the case and perhaps has been fixed. I was at one that was orbiting a site and when I came in today, I was not there anymore. Now, that could be because the owner moved on his own or maybe FD moved them out.

Fits right up there with taking skin samples to stop an alien navy. A thing that doesn't help my crankiness with this game.
Anyway, managed to go to another site and collect goodies and look around some more. Had to pay the hunter price to get to it. Thargoid roulette. Second try at least I wasn't interdicted on the way.
