Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

That is its entire purpose.

Garbage programming. It'd not only be completely wrong to do this, but it's incredibly slow and will cause massive stuttering as resources get loaded back in synchronously through an avalanche of page faults on random threads.

The reality of Sqn 404 being released isn't so bright unfortunately...an indefinite and as usual, undefined 'polishing' period (probably around an entire year from Ci~G's past efforts at similar distractions) followed by optimisation and a further finagling period of final polishing...let's not forget the incomplete and ultimately untested (from Yogi's comments during Citcon) flight model which has still to be added to their 'feature complete' game...

Q2 or Q3 2025 is my rough estimate.

As a marketing drive, Citcon did it's job, it gained the Empire of Roberts some much needed financial breathing space and development room but achieved little else bar offering more empty promises :)

Yeah, if they felt they could get it out in 2024 you can bet they woulda slapped a launch window on it.

The road to Beta has only just begun

(It is totally fascinating how effective a glitzy sizzle reel, all doubtless 'gummed up at the back', can be in flipping sentiment though ;))

The hopium is real!

Now this is AAAA game.

Seriously it's a different category. And it's going to be awkward in the gaming industry when this is released. But first they got to make sure this game is perfect.

At this point and with so many delays I'd give no flips about what press thinks about it and just push the limits to make sure the game is going to be at very minimum a GOTY when it's released, or sets a new bar.

Not surprising, but it does make me wonder about the other speculation about CiG selling StarEngine to others. Unlikely that anyone would want it based upon current performance, but then add on the lack on console support and I can't see that flying.
:)
They for sure want to sell Star Engine to others, but with 1 major the stipulation...you can only use to make anything other than a space game!
Can you imagine this? "We used to star engine to make Far Cry 10, whales in space, and as promised by CIg, it only took 2 months, and released." and the divide that will follow as CIg faithfuls point out how great Star Engine is, while SC faithfuls say how bad Far Cry 10 is.

They can't sell an engine that isn't theirs. They might try to exploit confusion what is whose but they never developed a full engine. It's all licensed stuff.

Asmongold is dishonest. How can you slight SF for bugs and praise the broken crap that is SC? Only if you're low integrity.
One is realeased and fair game for review. Another is a dream, maybe Asmongold is Canadian didn't want to step on another man's dream.

Maybe at the end of the 12 months, it'll be 13 years and getting stale. Time for refactoring to keep things fresh. All the old work has to be thrown out and polishing restarted, good for another 10 years of development and Citcon.

Roberts himself comments in the video that "when we have the locked release date, you will be the first to know," adding that "we want to make sure that Squadron 42 delivers on the promise of being this generation's Wing Commander." Or the next generation's Wing Commander, as the case may be. Or the next next generation's Wing Commander.

This last paragraph is written for the RPS writer or editor - possibly myself, possibly some other, fresher-faced soul? - writing the next Squadron 42 article, a few years from now. Godspeed, whoever you are. It's probably too much to hope that you're writing a Squadron 42 review.

Literally snorted tea at this.

Can you imagine a review of these guys about SC (the "mmo" part)?

LOL, looks like CIG paid for a puff piece but the writer couldn't help themselves but put in a few digs at the long development time.

Just a shame they didn't start out by saying "Squadron 42, the game earmarked to release in 2014..."

Do ppl think they will give PU access with SQ42 when it re-appears?
I believe so. But it might be separated from the eternal alpha PU and cut down to reduce the glitchbait.

The Persistent Universe is supposed to be the calm background to SQ42, far away from the Vega Sector, where the squaddie can relax, mow the lawn on Hurston, milk a space cow, murder a bad guy, hear a barkeep sing the praise of their heroic deeds, before they get back into action. Or wait for Episode 2.

What's the point in quoting this when they're talking about it extending the amount of RAM available as I mentioned. You shouldn't have applications getting paged out if you have enough RAM for them and the filesystem. Page files / swapping are historical artifacts from when RAM was extremely expensive and are harmful on modern systems. The main reason Star Citizen needs a page file is that hides the memory leaks as leaked memory ends up pushed out of RAM rather than bloat infinitely until it kills the program.
