I never understand why people shut down channels, unless you are fully quitting youtube as a whole. But changing formats, just change the format, no need to pitch the entire channel.

I am guessing this "shutting down and moving to another channel" is some kind of bowing to the almighty algorithm bull (edit: I think the algorithm is bull; bowing to it is... necessary if you want to be sucessful on YT I guess... /edit) instead of continuing with new content on an existing channel. Brand identity and all that.

His current channel has now become identified as a gaming channel by both the algorithm and currently subscribed viewers.

He doesn't want to cover games anymore, and the amount of steam required to pivot his channel in the eyes of both the algorithm and audience will be much greater than simply starting a new channel. At that point he can simply direct current audience members who are interested in seeing him put his education in astrophysics to use in more practical applications to that channel, and new audience members who are searching for that kind of content will more naturally find the channel because "the algorithm" won't categorize it as a channel about video games.

I have friends who create YouTube content and I know how difficult it had been for them to cover new kinds of material or different formats.

It's also about changing his life focus. He's keeping the Discord for gaming, but this allows him to make a complete break from running a gaming channel.

What good are the subscribers if they don't get to see what they subscribed for in future?

Probably going to lose those subscribers one way or another. Those who are not interested in whatever the new content will be will unsubscribe if he does it on the current channel. Most of them anyway. I'm guessing losing a large portion of your subscribers hurts more vis-à-vis the algorithm than rebuilding on another channel with those of his old subscriber base that are interested in the new content and will follow over. Guy's a smart cookie, and a minmaxer . He will know what's going to be best for the YouTube algorithm.

Was watching a music reaction youtuber yesterday who has been convinced his large channel was being deliberately throttled and attacked by youtube themselves, not just the algo. He eventually walked in to Google (!) and spoke to someone there, who was very sympathetic and checked their system and confirmed that yes, youtube was targetting his channel. Apparently Google and Youtube are at odds over the way youtube act and treat their own content creators, but there's nothing they can do about it as they are now a hands-length subsidiary company. He was advised to get a lawyer and turn up at the main youtube office

So I get it, if DTEA is seen as x by youtube, it's incredibly difficult to change to y. Youtube appears to be a mess.

It's a good thing that he didn't make his livelihood dependant on Youtube. Once it becomes your job, you're at the mercy of this corporation and their algorithms.

He should do himself a favour and make at least one longform every four weeks - same format as his old content.
This'll keep YouTube from dropping impressions on his existing content.

Its a shame to hear that he's stopping the gaming stuff but I wish him well. I dont think I'll be stopping by his new astronomy channel though, I already watch Dr Becky for that every Thursday and she has some lovely bloopers.

He's still doing sponsored videos, but instead of gaming chairs it's now doublet refractors.

(Hearsay warning) Actually he is not. It's his education, but he is working as a programmer for a bank or something like that, unless my memory serves me wrong. I want to say he said something like that in a video a few years back. Anyway, probably a better, or at least more secure job than a YT and Patreon dependant influencer.
