Mysterious Phenomenon Triggers Violent Attacks

26 OCT 3309

Pilots’ Federation ALERT

A large naval squadron has gone rogue in the Shamash system, amid claims of widespread mental instability caused by an unknown signal.

Security forces for the Shamash Future faction were practising fleet manoeuvres, shortly before they turned their weapons against passing traffic. Lieutenant Commander Mackenzie Coates , one of the officers coordinating Fleet Exercise Grey Swan, told the media:

“All crews deployed for the exercise are now ignoring orders and attacking anything within range. The evidence we’ve gathered suggests they’re suffering from violent mania, caused by some kind of mass psychological disturbance. They are still capable of operating the ships, making them a danger to civilians.”

“Garrett Orbital outpost reported an anomalous multi-frequency signal during Grey Swan, which also broke through our primary comms network. We think it’s related to the violence Shamash is now facing, but with all the chaos we haven’t had a chance to investigate further. Garrett Orbital is now in lockdown, while security teams onboard try to contain outbreaks of aggression from affected personnel.”

A popular news program, 'Frameshift Live', was broadcasting from Garrett Orbital around the time of the fleet exercise. Disturbing footage indicates the presenters were similarly affected by this unexplained hysteria.

The San Tu State Network megaship Khonsu Gleam, present in Shamash on unrelated business, has been asked to host defensive efforts since the system lacks a starport. Captain Ulrich Maurer has agreed to remain and support Shamash Future, by organising countermeasures against the Grey Swan fleet.

Speculation have been raised that the ‘anomalous multi-frequency signal’ might be a new Thargoid weapon, or a test of experimental mind-affecting technology. However, no alien or unauthorised vessels have been detected in the system, and the signal’s origin remains unconfirmed.

Don't know about that, I poked around the system for a couple of hours yesterday without anyone taking a bloodlustful interest.
I got bothered by an ordinary pirate, but until I shot back at them for annoying me while not even having a cargo rack, they didn’t shoot me.

I’m gonna remain curious about whether there’s any more messages bound to arrive today or tomorrow, but otherwise, there’s Thargoid spires that have been removed from their control to investigate. I hear they just go inactive in that case, but nobody really knows what to do with ‘em.

See, this is why, when you bought an entire Fleet Carrier to use as a broadcast studio, you should use it rather than try to cheap out and broadcast from some dingy backwater orbital platform. The voices will get you.

Exactly! As the foremost dingy backwater in the Galaxy I presume Hutton Orbital would beg to differ, but in place of a proper studio they still broadcast from Proxima Centauri every Thursday, and I posit that the voices have been getting them since at 3305 at the latest.

While I’m thinking of it, there’s an odd absence of mentions toward skull guy in the GalNet. You’d think someone writing these articles would have picked up on the logs recovered by pilots by now and noticed that rather strange occurrence.

Oooh. Can I humbly ask where, please?
Three systems around Taranis, one around Thor. But you can’t interact with them nearly as much - checked for myself. Some coral sap spawns, and very limited quantities of the impure spire minerals, but nothing else. Bio scans on the barnacles and coral stuff on the ground remains possible, but - barring a bug - I couldn’t find any spots on the spires.

I personally visited Hyades Sector HW-M b7-4.

Thank you. Much appreciated!

That is a bit of a head scratcher yes.
I think Frontier changed it with the weekly maintenance to accurately reflect the towers being above the surface now. The MLF also just straight up stays at 100 up to 23, maybe 25 kilometers now(I am not gonna time that one out).

Good chance there’s a lot of subterranean stuff to these sites that we haven’t yet seen, but might surface later(with future updates?). For those that remain active, I’d assume, anyway.

Now the other question - why do they have a mass lock factor in the first place? Obviously, it could just be for the purposes of realism and stuff, as well as conveying that these things are massive… but I’m not so sure. Mostly because we don’t have a damn clue what these are for.

They probably have MLF due to being far away from the surface enough to not cause a standard Mass Lock (as planets, carriers and stations do). In programming terms, it might also be that Frontier doesn't have yet a way of applying normal Mass Lock on planetary structures (in a radius around a point on surface), only on the planets themselves (above certain altitude from ground). Seeing a number is kinda odd, since it makes it relatable to ships we could figure out the mass by correlation with the MLFs of known ships, but it's most likely just that.

Or the spires are going to start flying soon (after Thimpets, Planetary Thorpedos).

On a note actually related to the topic of the main thread, it's was pretty neat that the planet and moons near the Garret Orbital weren't visible on the Full Spectrum Scanner. Didn't knew that they could pull stuff like that off.

Maybe they have neutronium stored in them? Or powered by micro black holes?
If the Thargoids have the tech to keep neutron bombs stable(that stuff would literally explode if removed from the neutron star) and recover the material from an environment that squishes you to a million separate atoms(and probably just reduces you to ash before you’d even reach its surface), or keep mini black holes around without them either dissipating or eating everything around them…

They can have this corner of the galaxy. At least, if they’re not gonna share.

Precisely. Gravity manipulation could do that. Very hypothetical, of course. Then again, thargs seem to have reactionless drives and graviitics seem to be the best bet for solving that little problem. Frame shift drives already bend spacetime, albeit in a quite crude way.

Dissipation is the problem. The BH eating everything around them, not so much. Feeding a micro black hole is more difficult than it seems; their event horizons have diameters way smaller than atoms ( eg, around 3e-6 pm for a BH that masses 1 000 000 ton and 3e-8 pm for a 10 000 ton BH; an hydrogen atom has a diameter of around 74 pm). Quite hard to keep a micro BH well-fed so it doesn't evaporate very energetically due to Hawking radiation.
