It is indeed a bit strange this doom obsession that some seem to have. IMO, Odyssey is quite a good game by now and doesn't really deserve the low steam rating and all the doom posting. To me it would be appear normal to play it if one likes it, or to play something else if one doesn't. No doubt it could be better, but what it does it does relatively well. We ought to celebrate what it has achieved and not trash it for what it hasn't..
I didn't know about any ratings at steam. There are many features of ED I enjoy like in no other game. The "classic" ED features like true physics, the vast galaxy, the trading. It is in many ways unmatched. I enjoy the game. Yet I WISH for the grand leap.
In addition I wanted to point out that there actually WAS unused potential in the game that other games did exploit.
To the critics of my thread: its the old game for example: One loves Multi-player - another hates it. I am not claiming to talk for all players. Yet you will find players that love almost any game. There are pl. who actually enjoy Raid shadow legends. A really really stupid game. But good for them - good for you if you like ED like it is now.
I was trying to point out the unused potential ED did NEVER EVER try to accomplish, the little features players asked for for over 15 years. Other games now have it. And THIS makes me furious.

Yeah, shooting at things is totally not an Elite thing. It never happened in the original 1984, and that's why outfitting your combat ships with a plethora of guns plays such a minor role in Elite Dangerous. Oh wait... ;).
True. Its right and I saw that post coming. Originally it was a shootem-up game. True. Lets say, like Elite was in the 1990.

"computer games for extremely nostalgic 60-year olds" isn't a massive market.

That is true. But here is the point of my thread: It turned out that EXACTLY the things the 60 years old wished for is what the 18+ years old or younger also love! Hello Starfield! And we old seniors knew it all along.

Regarding the wine drinking: one hour I enjoyed the most was sitting at the farsight asteroid outpost and sitting in the lounge watching the ships start and land. One absolute highlight of the game for me.

I think that we all wish the game was better and also fitting our dreams.txt better.

Still I think they've probably tried to do the best they could within restraints of budget and vision..

Most likely for every improvement you can think of, there's someone else who'd think it's an awful idea. Maybe best to just let Frontier make their game as they see fit.

Nonono.
That is not at all comparable. Its a bubble game. 100 Systems...come on. No.
But it made me angry that Elite after 6 years was suddenly overtaken by a game that implemented all ideas missing in this game. Sad. Bad.
100 systems is all you need. 100 different systems each playthrough would be really good.

They can't stop the jitter from making me almost vomit being dropped from the frontline solutions, I shudder to think how ship interiors would go.

Twitch my head straight through the hull.

In addition you might see that most of the actual "core" Elite players just don't play Elite anymore because they already playing NMS SC or SF.
Sorry utter rubbish, Elite is still the best game out there by miles.
The only other space game i play regular is X4 but even that drives me mad with the bugs.

What you and others (no disrespect intended) don't get is that we play ED for a reason, its different from everything else, its a TRUE sandbox with endless exploration.
I don't want it to be like other games as we may as well clear off and play them, but lets face it they arnt as good.

... and murder, crime and general horseplay with ones squadron... (Us old windbags know how to have fun together)... Endless opportunities to play in ways that one might find entertaining, to make your point inclusive ;)

I play other games also, but most play hours go straight to EDO - it continues to attract and entertain, which suits me fine!

I can see Elite Dangerous sadly slipping slowly into 'what has been'. That's the gloomy fact of the matter. (not doom comment for doom sake, just calling it as I see it )
I can fantasize that 'an investment' into interiors, more variety on planets (flora, fauna, discoverables) and some of the other oft mentions features would inject new life into this title.
I don't know the FDev business motivators and how they make decisions. I will not presume to advise on that either.
But I will say, there is an existing install base (customers) who are willing and eager to engage with ED if certain features were delivered.
A would be 'new game developer', to know they already have such a market waiting would be golden for them ...FDev have it and it feels frustrating that FDev haven't been successful at setting expectations for their customer base here.
Without this, doom statements will grow .... pity eh... that unless something happens pretty soon, ED will get logged in the history of the genre as a 'what could have been' ........

Good OP and I'm all for it. Come on FDev, be brave !

I still think that will go to Star Citisn't. ED maybe will be - no, wait SC will also overtake ED in the category "how not to design a game".

In the end everyone looks the extreme carcass of SC and the lessons of ED won't be learned and there will be another dev who will try the same thing again. And fail.

I enjoyed exploration before Horizons. I enjoyed exploration in Horizons, before Odyssey. I enjoy exploration in Odyssey.

Could more things have been added over the years to make exploration even better? Sure. Is it still good as it is? Definitely.

I really don't understand this (absurdly frequent) argument that because some on-foot shooting was added to the game, therefore the game is nothing but an on-foot shooter. That doesn't make sense. All the other bits of the game are still there.

Seriously if you were to put in enough detail a single system would suffice, imagine exploring a realistically detailed Sol system....and I mean realistically detailed so you would see things just like the mars explorers sned us pictures of, and underground oceans with possible life forms like on Europa and Enceladus that you had to drill down to, and Oort clouds to fly out to, asteroids, comets etc, put enough detail in and you could spend years just exploring the Sol system. But it does come down to that petty annoyance doesn't it, you just can't include enough detail to fill 400 billion star systems and have unique environments and life forms for every one. SF could do that because indeed they are dealing with 100 systems with associated planets. The last thing I would want with the release of earthlikes in ED would be a repeat of the bio we got with Horizons and Odyssey.

It's a bit of a quandary for me for me, I want earthlikes, but I don't want Odyssey style earthlikes, I want Starfield style earthlikes (at least the bio stuff) that you can fly down to and fly around like OD/H planets and for stuff to be unique, so not the same repeating bio across the galaxy we got with H and O, and I just don't see how to do that even with the best intentions. It's all very well saying earthlikes are easy, they aren't though are they, one, or even several hundred might classed as "easy", 100's millions? Nope! Not without repeating the same stuff over and over again on the same planets, sure maybe 20 or 30 different models, but still, repeated millions of times across the entire galaxy.

It may take a while to find & visit millions of ELWs...
But, you are correct, given the limited flora in EDO currently, generating sufficient diversity to make millions of ELWs feel unique may be beyond the remit of any AAA games studio, let alone a tiny one such as FD.

Of course they could just do a "selection" of ELW's for people to land on, say the ones in and closest to the bubble and Colonia, but how would that work lore wise and player satisfaction wise, of that I am not sure.
