Fourth Anniversary

Rheas are very easily annoyed. Have you seen Kevin? They don’t call him the Demon Bird for nothing…

So I would suggest not to mess with the mighty bird 😅
I get that SA needs more rep but I honestly don’t care if this new animal is SA or not. We need way more rep for SA and one animal isn’t gonna change that. We need a whole pack on it, plus the Rhea is boring imo. It’s a grey ostrich from a different continent, and in terms of realism I can’t really build an interesting enclosure for them.

You could do a mixed Pampas habitat with other species

And while yes, I do agree that SA needs more diversity, the Pampas region is one of the most lacking, and the Rhea would significantly help that.

I'd be surprised if we got a reptile or bird for free since they seem to need a lot more personal detailing in order to meet Frontier's standards (every single bird or reptile we've gotten in DLC has been stunning), so I would just generally caution anyone getting over their skis on that point.

This might be the year we don't have an anniversary too, and that's fine. We got two, which is more than PC got.

I'm guessing if we do get a free animal it will be a mammal, something like the American black bear makes a lot of sense, or perhaps a blackbuck. But free is free at the end of the day so you'll see no complaints from me

Well a file for the 4th anniversary was found, so I guess we will get something, otherwise there would be no need for such file. Of course, it doesnt have to be an animal, but I do think it is kind of given.

On the Rhea debate. It would not be a bad animal at all. Sure, we need many more SA animals, but still a one more representative is better than none. Not to mention it is a bird, so that is a plus too. Not the most exciting SA animal sure, but incredibly common in captivity. Man and if they gave us a Pampas Grass foliage with it, it would make me really happy. Chances for new foliage are probably zero though.

The birds and reptiles this year have been the same quality as the rest of the mammals though, so there’s not a big difference. The only difference is the new animations (monitor with diving or kiwis new animation set)

Hot take I guess: I don't need the Rhea. We already have an ostrich and emu. If we get a bird please let it be a grey crowned crane. Or even a flamingo.. and I just wonder do any players here actually prefer getting the Rhea over the beautiful crane? I mean like if you had to choose and you could never get the other one in the future

They're equal

I actually do prefer the Rhea, because, even though it seems redundant, that's actually why I want it.

What the ostrich does in mixed African savannah exhibits, by adding some life by running around everywhere and being a recognizable and different species than the mammal focused habitat, rheas do exactly the same but for South America. They can be in mixed South American grassland (pampas) exhibits, paired up nicely with capybara, tapirs, and anteaters

Look one is a plain animal thats very needed and wont sell well.
The other is a flashy animal that could sell a dlc on its own as its flagship.
1 + 1 = You guys are all on hella copium believing that theres any chance for the gray crowned crane

I don't really understand how the rhea is less interesting than any ungulate we could get at this point. If the rhea is just an ostrich for South America, the blackbuck is just a gazelle for India and the markhor is just an ibex for the Himalayas. Or, if we're sticking to South American fauna, the spectacled bear (which is less common in zoos and less important for SA imo) is just a Formosan black bear from a different continent. Their enclosures wouldn't be any more different from the kind you make already.

I do lol. Neither are kept in my local zoos, but I see the rhea as more essential for South America than the crane is for Africa personally.

Yes I get that, I meant in the case we could only get one of the two ever .. so it doesn't matter anniversary present or not. What if you have to choose between them and the other never gets in the game... Ever... What do you pick?

I think, still the Rhea. It's an animal I can relate to far more than the crane.

For one, I've actually seen rheas in zoos, the zoo has 3 or 4 in an enclosure with capybaras, tapirs, anteaters, screamers, and swans (I think they're swans, I can't remember)

Also, my paternal family is from Argentina, so because the rhea (known as the ñandu and also sometimes as the avestruz, although the latter refers more to ostriches) is from there, it kinda clicks with me better

I honestly dont care. I want the rhea not for itself but for its function and much needed filler "ungulate" for south america (id personally say of all filler "ungulates" the mara and rhea are imo the last truly essential ones that are needed) meanwhile id like the gray crowned crane cause it itself is a great animal with lots of things going for it but with next to no actually need in the game as while africa could also use some more birds, it has enough other stuff to be on the bottom of the priority list. + id prefer a stork either way, be it the very fun undertaker, the beautiful painted stork or even better the white stork for the combined asia, europe and africa representation while also being extremly common in zoos both as kept and as a wild animal activly wellcomed.
Its really cute, each year many german zoos prep themself for the returning storks with many having atleast one resident pair that returns every year
This pic is from the zoo heidelberg, where each year a pair returns to nest on the building next to their seabird aviary and the same goes for the majority of zoos here
