Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

The state change would happen if you fast travel into your cockpit.

Quick travel from concourse (including FC) to cockpit would likely cut out the hangar set* and ship external model (and the need to run to the boarding point^) - thus should be more efficient and a faster transition...

*it looks like this is separate from the concourse itself and loaded in inbetween, possibly helping to pre-buffer the set (stage) and mode change ahead when boarding

Here's something a little different.

It is a well known fact that a fleet carrier cannot move like a ship - it can only jump, right? Right?

Not entirely true. Here's me trying to dock with mine. Note the distance reticule.

I mean, what is going on? *

* A bug no doubt :D
It's because there were two SOIs near each other, one for the planet, and one for the carrier, and when you dropped you wound up in the SOI of the planet instead of the carrier. It's kind of a bug that you dropped into the wrong SOI, but it happens very rarely.

The same thing happens if you try to visit Mitterand Hollow. You gotta line up so you get into the SOI of the fast-moving moon, or it'll fly right by you.

What's an SOI, you ask? Sphere of Influence. Your current SOI is usually displayed on the HUD, lower left area. It used to be important when doing Skimmer missions, to ensure that you'd get Skimmers of the faction you were targeting, which is when I learned about it. Most of us just ignore it because it so rarely matters for what we're doing.

I was thinking less board and more flying scooter/bike/chair as seen in many Gerry Anderson masterpieces, alternatively the rocket sled that Major Matt Mason had.

The scooter from Fireball XL5 and the Majors sled might be better suited for outdoor work, but the Thunderbirds more delicate flying chairs would fit indoors.

The lift section could just be a well-disguised loading screen.

I think most people would think of someone else when they hear "flying bike", though...

That’s what i was thinking - then again, the delay when selecting a different ship indicates there is preload happening there… but still, i doubt the hangar is in RAM along with concourse interior (including a backdrop station interior - the landing bay area with view of mailslot) hmmm… 🤔

Ah, thanks for the info. I must've been very unlucky as I tried twice :D Didn't know about this SOI business so that explains it. In he end I remote jumped the carrier and caught up with it later.

On a slightly related related note, I've just created another video of Tyres doing his thing in his favourite high CZ layout... although the payout this time around wasn't exactly spectacular. There were a couple of glitches that could have worked to my advantage: points Charlie and Echo are/were never taken or even attempted by the enemy. Once these points were both up for capture, no other points became "open".

I could have just whittled the bad guys' progress bar down by shooting them all but that would've taken quite some time. Although the payout would have been something to behold :D

Also, it was a pity it wasn't in daylight but hey ho.

The thing is the immense file sizes involved.

After I had to wait nearly a day for my last CZ to upload, I decided to down the resolution to 1920x1080 (no more 4K!). It was still 21.4GB (that is gigabytes - ) for a 26 minute video. Holy snapping duckpoo. 1hr 41 to upload. And then the Toob needs to process it.

I'll er... post the link in a couple of weeks once it's finalised :D

I'm still a bit wet behind the ears on this video malarky.

EDIT - I'm on a 500mbit (down) line. Perhaps a 1gbit may be on the cards... mwahahaaa!

You can sometimes see the SOI effect when coming into a station as you get closer in cruise the station keeps drifting out of the centreof your HUD but when you get close enough it suddenly stops doing that and the HUD moves the other way as the steer you had applied to chase the station isn't needed.

Oh, I though that was just the SCA trying to line up with a moving i.e. orbiting target!

Dear me, 2018 I joined this game and I'm still learning!

Tell me your ship parked 5 miles away from you without telling me your ship parked 5 miles away from you.
