GALNET - Concerns Raised over Titan Returnees - 14 NOV 3309

Did you rescue any pods?
You may already be infected...

What a pretty Maltese cross.

Though the spin makes it look oddly like a parasol from time to time.

What's even more interesting is that this Imperial medical instute is from Kamadhenu.
That system is Emperor Arissa Lavigny-Duval's personal domain - her center of power, her expert medical instutute.

That means she'll have to respond -- is this going to be Imperial policy?

What would the reasoning behind such a delayed response be? (Genuine question btw)
The specific wording is "auto-immune", not just an immune response - their immune systems are attacking their own (apparently) healthy cells. The description is "multiple" which implies it's not universal but there is a suspicious commonality of symptoms across some of the thousands of rescuees. What exactly causes auto-immune conditions isn't that well understood nowadays, but it can happen apparently spontaneously or take weeks to months after the apparent "cause" for the symptoms to become obvious. And they're pretty random as to who gets affected, as is the severity and duration of the effect.

One possible cause relevant here: they have been subject to subtle genetic reprogramming; in some cases, their immune systems were not themselves sufficiently compromised and are trying to fight back by destroying the affected cells. This is presumably what Dr Terentia is suggesting might be happening.

Another possible cause: they have been subject to extreme stress and other non-ideal conditions inside the pods, maybe elevated radiation or toxin levels, possibly the wrong nutrient balance, then were "rescued" by a repurposed mining missile, and perhaps haven't been in the most ideal environment since either; in some cases this has triggered an autoimmune response. Not good for them, but not a cause for concern beyond the need to treat that too. This is probably approximately what Dr Colombera is expecting the explanation is.

In theory, it might be possible to pick up the first by doing full genetic sequencing and comparing to a sample from before they were captured - but finding a former captive who just happens to have a full sequencing already on file (and the file itself not destroyed in the Thargoid attacks) might take a while.

Was not aware of the difference in wording… but this still doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence in the ‘Things will be fine’ perspective.

Perhaps the hindsight approach could work here—sequence a thousand people, hand them over to a Scythe, then run rescues at the corresponding Titan until some are returned? They may even get to meet the Far God!

Putting aside that we don’t yet know if this is going to be anything serious or a… I’m not gonna say mild, but in the scope of all possibilities not terrible side effect of being trapped on a Titan…

Is it a coincidence that this is getting discovered now, just as we’re starting to sabotage the spires? I don’t think so …

Wow. Exile and euthanasia! Easy does it, Dr Tarantula! ☠️

Surely we can keep things under control in the isolation scheme now being used - even if the worst comes true. In the meantime, an auto-immune response isn't necessarily a Frankenstein event, dear doctor. Sheesh!

BTW: does this mean that Ancestry went out of business?

Perhaps the present isolation centres are too close to things that might get damaged if a sufficiently large charge is used to nuke the site to orbit.

Yes, yes. We will feel sorry for them and all that getting in touch with our feelings stuff. If they don’t morph, we’ll take care of them, etc, etc. Take up a collection, provide for their families, maybe even have a CG to set up long term care.

BUT IF THEY DO 😀, sorry, there’s no going back, so saddle up, soldiers! Then it’s either them or us. It’s a bug hunt!

Elite Dangerous
If they want to make it dangerous, player characters should not be immune to the Thargoid “plague”(or whatever you’d like to call it), if it comes into existence.

Right now, it feels more like “Elite: Human Mistakes”. … that doesn’t make for a great title. I am semi-serious about that first paragraph though.

Boarding an infested rescue ship and taking care of business dead space style would be cool. Maybe some are fine (rescue them) and some are not. Not that I think that is what will happen.
