Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Yes, it will be the "future of gaming", as in will never arrive.

Edit; the comments... are these real people or bot comments?

It's always eerily and bizarrely enthusiastic about absolutely everything under their YT vids. (Only at absolutely peak drama moments does snark makes its ways visibly to the top).

I suspect they run some fairly tight modding lines at minimum. Nightrider style ;)

More Pipeline projections...

@LeakNews Some new leaked information about CIG's plans for the end of this year going into 2024, according to sources familiar with the plans: Following yesterday's preliminary testing of the Replication Layer split, the intention is to test the connection of Stanton and Pyro via the jump gate before the end of December on the Tech Preview channel. It is unclear whether Server Meshing would be needed for this test; while logic suggests that static meshing would be required for any sort of jump gate, the technology was not mentioned in the plans. Successful deployment of both the RL split as well as the jump gate to the Tech Preview channel would pave the way for a Pyro release as well as both Static and Dynamic Server Meshing next year. Furthermore, focus is currently being put on bringing Squadron 42 features that teams have been developing back to the Persistent Universe. This is reportedly a top priority. "Tremendous progress" has already been made and they want to continue boosting the process in the rest of the year and beyond. Work will continue into the new year until they have implemented everything from Squadron 42, with the goal of the Q1 patch to contain as many Squadron 42 features as possible. A summary/TL;DR:

3.22 EOY as a quality of life patch
Tech Preview channel before EOY with Pyro-Stanton connection and Replication Layer split
Q1: The first patch heavily affected by development changes

Dynamic Meshes in 2024. Who needs Mr.Nowak? ;)

The "we're gonna test jump gates without meshing" leak is a strange one. I guess it could be because the jump gate code is being imported from SQ42 (which won't have any server meshing), so they're just trying to show that they can import the code. But presumably they'll need to cut back Pyro even further than last time - and maybe cut bits out of Stanton as well ... hardly seems worthwhile 🤷‍♀️

Goddammit, SC is so damn advanced that i dont even understand what im looking at.
I mean, i get it, that's a bed, but... with a chair on top? in some sort of limbo state/universe?
It doesnt compute...

SC is one of those "theatre of the mind" games where you don't need a board, or a computer. All of the players just imagine what they would like it to do and it comes alive like no other game.

Oh, right... just like Elite 1984. I remember spending equal time playing the game and daydreaming of ship interiors in that wireframe Cobra or Coriolis space station interiors.
How ironic that currently i'm really not looking forward to ship interiors in ED 🙃

I imagine they wouldn't really need anything new for jump gates. Logging into the game is a "jump" into Stanton. The jump tunnel loading screen / minigame would play while the game logs the player out of the Stanton server (similar to "exit to menu") and into another Pyro server. It wouldn't be as fast as a FSD jump but some believers cherish the illusion of distance.

They do not need meshing to test jump gates… didn’t they said they already had the session controller/load balancer that will help the client not lose connection?

A server loads Stanton, another pyro and the session controller tells the client when to play the dramatic jump animations, when to unload stanton map and load pyro into memory… it also tells the persistent layer which server has authority to write the state of the current entities associated with the client… boom, jump completed…

Now, obviously this is just speculation but you get the idea…

Just to show how slow I am, it just occured to me how stupid the tractor beam cargo loading thing is. A dude in zero-g beaming a cargo crate.ship that weighs more than him and moves it around as it it has no weight. Physics.

It has no weight because it is in space, it has mass and momentum. Weight is an artificial and entirely imaginary concept due to the acceleration of mass in a gravity field which we perceive as weight. But yes physics, in SC there are none!

Plenty of prophets and blaggers about still though ;)

Philogelos - Jokes from the turn of the 4th Century
Love how casually awful all those jokes are.

I think this one is a good fit for this thread though.

202. A stupid astrologer reads a child’s horoscope: ‘This boy will be a lawyer, then a prefect, then a chief magistrate.’ Well, the child dies. When his mother runs into the astrologer again, she says, ‘The one you said would be a lawyer and a prefect and a chief magistrate — he’s dead!’ ‘I swear on the boy’s tomb,’ says he, ‘if he had lived, he would have become all those things!’
