"Essential" is subjective anyway. The three African mammals essential to me are the serval, H. baboon, and waterbuck. They're very essential for building a New Zealand zoo, for example. Just like how, to me, the Sumatran tiger is also essential, whereas to most others it's a total waste (I'd prefer it over a lot of "more unique" species, definitely). And for reptiles, most people want the African spurred tortoise or an African crocodile; I want the leopard tortoise. It's far more essential to me as this is the species the zoos I'm familiar with keep.

Serval, Baboon, an unique antelope (waterbuck qualifies!), and another highly requested animal (Pelican IS the best choice although honey badger OR maybe even Hyrax). A pack like that would be an universal favorite!
Definitely heated with mix of dissapoitment, because as you said people anticipate roster full of highly requested animals and such completely bypassing 2 unique animals per pack structure and element off randomness Frontier likes to include. For starter, the presence of a deer and only one monkey will definitely upset most players.
It's probably going to be the same debates over SA representation, I cannot see any number of packs covering every key species for SA we ask for because that's not how dlc rosters realistically work out. We got a great range of animals for eurasia trying to fill that gap of europe and asia but we still have heated debates over why we didn't get an Indian antelope, asia deer etc.
I really think Frontier will add more than one monkey! I think they will go with the Black Howler (its the only monkey I want personally!) and some sort of "clone" of the capuchin.
Ill be honest, a SA animal pack of any kind with not atleast 2 monkeys will be a disapointment
Im convinced there will be essentially a grasslands animal pack v2, idk something like Savannah, Scrubland, Safari whatever really. Roster would essentially be a mix of African and indian animals lead by the Secretary with maybe the mara and or rhea aswell. Would round up a good chunk of the top 25ish on the wishlists like the before mentioned 3, honeybadger, indian antelope and so one
After SA, It really would be v2 additions of existing packs if we forget about the idea of the mountains/highlands dlc idea since takin was one of the forefront leaders for that idea. Already discussed is like a savanna pack, tundra pack, woodlands pack, islands pack... all basically additions of already existing themes more or less. Regional packs like the oceania and eurasia packs only seem to gain traction for the idea of latin/central america instead of looking at various other areas that could be covered but with how broad frontier went with the eurasia pack, its hard to see hyper specific packs like an india pack coming to reality.
India animal pack isnt that far fetched imo. Could have a really great roster of animals potentially
Add Golden Jackal and a mongoose (in my opinion).
