It all depends on what they want to do.. Imagine if they wanted to add base building, I'd be up for going out with a group of people and colonize some far away part of the galaxy. It could involve explorers to find the right systems and planets/moons. Then prospectors getting down on the surface to find good spots. The better the system and location was selected the better the settlement would fare. Then it could involve traders to haul out building materials and colonists, and bring back products to sell. The fun of growing the system and choosing what kind of settlements, etc. Fighters to defend settlements and systems against pirates and other threats.
The PvP part.. Do we really want other players to be able to gank our new colonies, be that for competing, or just for the kick of griefing another group?
Still one would ask why do it at all. Maybe just because we can would be enough?
But I do think there could be a lot of gameplay in something like that, and an opportunity to make things more exciting for explorers. Ideas like this could be fleshed out a lot, but in the end I'm just an armchair developer and it's probably better to leave game design in the hands of the professionals..
