The Steam method described above is good for managing space in general if you're creaking, but unfortunately it doesn't help with the issue of ED updates running out of swing space, because the update mechanism* uses parts of the filesystem that aren't under Steam's control and also go against Microsoft recommendations for managing large data staging problems of this kind. TLDR if you move Steam to D drive, the updater is still quite capable of filling C up for you. (I fixed that by using a junction last time!)

* actually the last time I had a problem was with the old loader so mayyyyyybe they've fixed it...
