It would be great to clarify whether this is saying "you need 30G free space to install the update" or "the update is a 30G download and you might need up to [say, pessimistically*] 60G free to install it".

Definitive information here (i.e. what exactly is the space requirement) could potentially save a few people time and even money!

* (or optimistically, because bigger update, ofc!)

More important than the size on disc is the development of the game. The new ships are delightful. Changes to Power Play - great, let's see what they come up with. 30Gb will survive, there is movement, and that's good.

Another stupid question, I'm full of em, but does anyone know what update 18 might be?
No patch notes to date.
So just speculation I'm sure.

Dealing with the Thargoid Titans and bug fixes, maybe more. Boarding a Titan would be neat.

Ah. Was kinda hoping for something else apart from goids. Ship interiors perhaps, or real piracy namely boarding vessels etc. Or even some carrier updates.

Fetching one file at a time would be counterproductive, unless you are referring to a smaller number of archived files, large numbers of individual files would both slow the download hugely and at the same time increase the chances of corrupted files. I am assuming a few large archived files that contain a large number of compressed smaller files, the large file would be extracted to the same volume as the archived files then checked for consistency before the large archive would be deleted, then the many smaller files can be extracted and installed one at a time and the source file deleted as it goes. So it shouldn't take up triple the space, double the space, then once the large archives are deleted you have plenty of working room for install.

Odyssey has 89,000 files in the install folder, so they don't need to replace a handful of huge files, just replace many, many thousands of small ones. (The launcher does it this way - it does a sync. Steam has its own method.)
