ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

... is rippling -shimmering? Ships are a blurry shape that ripples/shimmers ...
In your nvidia and Elite: Dangerous settings, is VSYNC set to 'ON'? The rippling/shimmering thing sounds like something you might get with VSYNC = OFF, and it might go away if you set it to ON. I'm away from my Oculus rig at the moment - I will check my settings this evening and post more, if I have further thoughts

So, is it worth shelling out three hundred quid to get a DK2 (about $500 Australian), out of the games I have pretty much ED will be the only game to support it (have a feeling Terraria won't match up that well).

The game I've played so far is very shiny but I'm worried about the controls, I seem to have to switch between gamepad and keyboard often due to the lack of buttons mapped to the 360 controller I'm using and this will be difficult if I can't see the 'board. Or worth getting a HOTAS setup?

Depends. Are you OK on shelling out 300q on a whim, knowing that a year from now it will be obsolete?

First few hours/days playing Elite on DK2 is mindblowing, but then you get used to it and wait for Rift CV1.

Thr rift is awesome.

If you have $350 to spare, then yes. BUT, it could potentially cost you more than this if your rig is a couple years old.
I upgraded to a GTX 970 and I must say that the Rift experience is second to none, even with all the current imperfections.

I play with a HOTAS setup, Yaw pedals, as well as 4 additional stomp pedals next to the Yaw.
I'm not lacking for buttons, but I am sometimes lacking brain power to remember what all the buttons are mapped to! (muscle memory will eventually kick in)

So, as you can imagine the cost of ownership quickly adds up.

As for other games, if you like flight sims there's War Thunder and IL-2 BOS who are both currently working on adding native Rift support, and both promise to be ready by the end of the year.
Also, let's not forget Star Citizen (eventually) as well as Alien Isolation (with a small hack applied) and all the other stuff that's being worked on right now.

I am very curious what the system requirements for CV1 will be. I'm hoping NVIDIA/AMD will come up with some VR tricks in their firmware and I'm hoping game publishers will get smart(er) about how they optimize their games, otherwise with 4x the pixels needing 90fps instead of 75fps the hardware will be untouchable for the common Joe.
We shall see...........

Iam debating on either oculus or trackir. What would you guys suggest that have it? I have been reading the boards and seeing the pros and cons i guess and i dont mind spending the money for it. Just curious what users of it would suggest. I understand that you get a lot more immersion then i would with the trackir.

Well I have been using trackIR for over 5 years, thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Bought a DK2 yesterday, it's like night and day, I would never ever go back to trackIR, you cant compare the two, DK2 is full size virtual reality, trackIR is just head tracking.

To give you a quick example, I tried the Eagle first, was blown away that everything was full size, then tried the sidewinder, you can see all the rust in the cockpit. Then I tried the hauler, I used the think that ship was tiny and the flightdeck boring, I actually now feel like I am in a huge ship, so much space around me. Can't imagine what it will be like when I get in a Lakon type 9 :/

thanks for the reply you helped me on my decision. :)

Once you get into a type-9, you'll be back to thinking the hauler in tiny. :D

Never mind that. One you get a cobra you'll be back to thinking the hauler is tiny.

People thinking to buy DK2 just to play.
I recommend to wait for the consumer version (2015 Feb) since the resolution on the DK2 is not what you expect. And the Crescent Bay prototype is probably not going to be sold.
Yes It is still great even in the current low resolution but I still recommend to wait unless you have enough money to burn.

2015? There's a rumour on the 'net today saying it will be February 2016.

And when it is available, it will probably take 6 months to clear the shipping backlog.

The warnings about the DK2 being a developer's product are all true, but then you hear people saying they could never return to playing on a monitor. Yes there are problems, yes the frame rate can be glitchy and there is the screen door effect and chromatic aberration and low resolution and your face gets sweaty and you look silly and OH MY GOD I'M IN SPAAAAACE!

Don't ignore the warnings, but the DK2 will probably be the best VR available for ~12 months or so.

How many times do people need to be told that there will be NO BLOODY DK3 RELEASE!?

Consumer release is expected to be Q3 or Q4 of 2015, by conservative estimates. Even Brandon Irbe said that, "We're more than a few months, but less than years away from the consumer release". Combine this with the other statements from Oculus and not some clickbait article from some guy who doesn't know what he's talking about (ie: KDrama), you can arrive at the same conservative estimate.

17.

No...wait... 19.

Yes, 19 times. ;)

It will come when it comes. The big issue I feel is not the Oculus hardware, but the graphical & CPU grunt required to run it. My system can barely handle the DK2 as it is. My impression from reading this thread is that this is the case for a number of people.

A number of technologies need to come together & improve (and come down in price) before CV1 is truly a mass market product.

I agree with what 777driver said but with the caveat that the resolution is less. It is a compromise, you get to be actually inside a computer game, but it's one from a decade or so ago. Even so I would not swap it for a 16k 50" monitor.

I'm selling my DK2. It was good and all, but a bit fiddly, and gave me mild feelings of nausea. The great thing is, it looks like I'll get back more than I paid for it...

Really looking forward to the consumer release, which will hopefully iron out a lot of the problems. Also, I might have a Maxwell monster rig by than.

Hi all, I just pre-ordered a DK2. I'd be interested to hear in people's experience of ordering it. It says deliveries will take 2-4 weeks from order date which is fine, it's the $77 taxes that's a little concerning. I understand they'll only charge my card when it's ready to ship and so I was wondering if you guys had the taxes charge added as well or do they have a UK based distributor to send them out?

Taxes:
0$ Turkey
85$ Czech Rep,.
81$ Slovakia
75$ Denmark
86$ Poland

Shipping:
155$ Turkey
55$ Czech rep.
22$ US

both is usually different, depending on the country.

I dont have mine yet, I'm asking around my friends in US to help me with that. Buy one and then send it to me. I mean for Them it would be like 350+30$ thats still 110$ cheaper than for me, so if they would send it here for less than 100$ it's worthy. And with 100$ for shipping I can send OR 3x time around the world probably.

The question is.. how it is with possible warranty, I dont know if DK has one, but then not being the original owner/buyer could be an issue.

It seems to differ from where in the world you are. I am currently in Ireland and got it in 4 days but heard people in the US have not been so lucky.

I'm not too bothered about the timescale and more the extra import costs. Can I ask if when you played your pre-order you had to pay extra for import tax, in addition to shipping? And if so did they end up charging you the extra tax when it came to taking payment?
