ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

it does seem to help with getting Windows / E: D to always see the Rift as the "Secondary" screen if you have more than one monitor. It saves faffing with setting monitors

It is important to run OR in 75Hz, and usually when you set up Rift as secondary and use extended mode then rift works in 60 Hz (same as your primary screen) and you have lot s of judder. I would love to have rift as secondary screen, but struggle to set it as such with proper refresh rate :/

There appears to be a new SDK 0.4.3.1 out. I haven't seen a new runtime download so guessing it does not directly effect DK2/ED users at this time?

hi,
. it arrived to me just yesterday the DK2 and I have some questions (sorry if they have already answered ..but 334 pages are too many to read ..):

- I have everything set up properly (looking in the forums), but the text is unreadable, I can do something to make them more defined?
- When I use the oculus, some buttons on the profile that i have created for the saitek not work, why?
- Is there any particular foresight to use / advice for me?

thanks

Hi Chris, welcome to the Oculus club. :)

The text "should" be more difficult to read than on a regular monitor, but not impossible. Few things to try:

1) Make sure your eyes are directly over the "sweet-spot" of the lenses. There is only one sweet spot.
2) Run the IPD setup utility a few times through the Oculus control panel. Note the values it brings back, and finally take the average.
3) Try leaning right back in your chair and then resetting the Rift (F12 by default) in the game. That way, when you lean forward a little, the text will appear closer.
4) Lean in to read text that is difficult to read & look straight at it.
5) Turn off Blur, Anti-aliasing, and GUI Effects in the game.
6) In E: D options, make sure the Oculus slider is all the way up, and you are running 75hz and 1080 resolution.

Some people have reported you can run at higher resolutions & then supersample down to the Rift screen, which makes the text more readable. You need a pretty powerful rig to be able to do this though... hence I haven't tried.

As for the buttons - anything that involves activating panels or headlook will not work with the Rift. You have to physically move your head instead! :)

Let us know how you get on. Good luck. :)

Hi Chris79ita,

Probably the first thing to check is that in game your resolution is set to 1980x1080. It won't necessarily default to this, also if you don't see it on the list you might need to scroll down ;)

Good luck

hi,

- When I use the oculus, some buttons on the profile that i have created for the saitek not work, why?

I had this problem when using the rift where the buttons for moving up and down the panels weren't working (joy hat 1 I think). That hat switch had been bound to two different places so it needed removing. Just check that the button which doesn't work isn't mapped in two places in their profile, and it'll start working then hopefully.

I don't know if is just a case, I did the test...
Trying to do the view setup in the OCULUS TOOL, but the DK1 way; instead of looking at the green line, look straight and move the line to the extreme tail of your view.
IPD changes a bit and has to be updated, but looks a bit better. But maybe it's only me.

HI sorry if this has a reply , somewhere, yet I have to ask.

I have gone through a lot of this thread. and managed to remove the jitters, so everything runs smooth..
with my ip set correct, Ed setting to LOW across the board. running at the suggested 75 and correct screen res ( sorry cant remember at the moment. but it is correct :) )
The text is fine when I lean in, and I have no problem with judder, BUt I CAn NOT make the game clear ,
As I fly in closer to anything, every thing becomes blurry.( even in the 'sweet spot'.) it makes docking impossible to line up. the screen ,as best I can describe ,is rippling -shimmering? Ships are a blurry shape that ripples/shimmers regardless of distance. something ,maybe, with the AA? but I have tried every combination I can think of --in and out of elite +Nvidea .

P.C spec with out the DK2 are set to run ED at the highest levels and there is NO problems so it is not a pc power problem.

Have tried every comb I can think of, with on/off AA setting
in game blur off. AA off right through to smaa etc.
even tried setting windows to classic colours.
Dk 2 setting from prim to second screen- left aline-right aline, rotated,
updated DX and all other drivers.
eye cup a and b.

ALSO NOTICE - I can play SKYRIm perfect, with high setting with the rift, ( the moon looks a bit weird ) but it plays great.

so any more ideas? are very welcome. thank you

Hi guys.

Just retried my Dk2 after a few months..... Wow! Direct mode and 3.04 makes such a difference! Clearer text and the constant micro stutterings on my SLI rig are gone.

Couple of questions though:
1) any indications what the SLI mode should be? I'm using two x 780mx
2) In game I can't change the frequency from 60hz. Does this matter? I'm running in direct mode as mentioned. My monitor doesn't seem to do 75hz anyway (in extended mode)
3) all is great, except when I move my head there is a huge latency sometimes on the screen. For example, a yellow blip of the rader will seem to appear where it was s well as where it should be. Same with the Stars. It is like seeing double. Is this a known issue? (Caused by 60hz?).

Thanks for any suggestions.

I don`think Direct mode work well yet, you need 75Hz in the DK2 or you will get insane frames lag (judder) that will give you high eyestrain.

Hi mate,

Yes this is a known issue. To my knowledge it's a problem with Direct mode, not your monitor. This is why most of us are using Extended mode which works much better at this time.

HI sorry if this has a reply , somewhere, yet I have to ask.

I have gone through a lot of this thread...........................
............................... very welcome. thank you

I have the rift pulled all the way back, more far away as possible, this might reduce FOV, but reduces screen door effect(I know they are dots)
Do the EYE setting the DK1 way.
Put your new IPD/1000 in the file that needs it
Put a scarf/bandana on your head, while moving away the rift they can get grease or humid on lens that can make view blury.
Don't use the cloth in the DK2 to clean the lens.
Put a piece of paper/cloth in the line near the nose, Breathing can create Humidity that goes inside the oculus lens.
This is what I do for now.

I see you play skyrim, with what? VropX?
If YES did you try VorpX with E: D?
