Spring 2024 DLC Speculation

You've raised this before but I think it bears repeating! The goal post is always going to be shifting. If the game continued developing we'd be talking about how unfair it is that the iconic and essential slow loris isn't in the game (no shade toward the slow loris; I love those molasses-paced li'l dudes but you know what I mean).

Frontier did a bang-up job at knocking animals off the wishlist! Really impressive, honestly. But there's still some key species and a few animal "types" that remain underrepresented.

And I've said it before but if they had shifted the content of the packs to include more New World monkeys or primates in general... Then people would be wishing for other animal types that are less represented in favor of them. It's always going to be something.
I'm guilty of this myself, but sometimes it feels like there's more of a focus of what's not in the game, than what actually is. I mean, I get with DLC speculation threads that's the point, but at some point Frontier has to draw the line on what's considered popular enough to be considered essential? They have the final say in that, we don't, but we should also have an understanding that this will happen at some point...because it will. It probably already has happened we just don't have the final pack or two yet.

And a perfect example of where we'd be at eventually if Frontier kept releasing DLC and kept adding in popular animals. In cards terminology: Imagine how amazing the game would be if our most wanted animals were things like the slow loris and the pacarana? Would we really spend that much time debating why they should be included when the roster would be that rich? Why can't we do that now?

Again, guilty myself of it for sure. But I'm not going to fault Frontier for their mammal picks. The mammal roster is amazing and the only real "need" is adding to the New Workd Monkey situation.

Here's one question for everyone:

If the next DLC is last, is there a version of that pack (not making it into an unrealistic 30 animal expansion) that would completely satisfy you or come close to it? Or do you believe that there are too many holes to be plugged by one pack?
If there is really only one pack left a mix of a regular dlc with an animal pack would be ok acceptable for me, with 11 habitat and 2 exhibit animals.

Europe:
1. Great white pelican - the only bird I consider iconic and very necessary

SA:
2. Coati - most wanted SA animal
3. Howler - SA primate
4. Rhea - all 3 below needed for creating standard European zoo SA habitat
5. Mara - SA unique rodent
6. Vicuña - wild camelid and easy clone

NA:
7. Musk ox - very different from what we already have and I think needed

Asia:
8. Père David’s deer - one of the most known Asian deer species and also saved by zoos and only mammal extinct in the wild

Oceania:
9. Tree kangaroo - unique addition that would make many people happy

Africa:
10. Baboon - last typical zoo animal that is still missing
11. Serval - very popular zoo cat and easy clone

WTE: Golden lion tamarin
Ex: Chameleon

Anniversary: Spectacled bear and Gray crowned crane (two species for the end of support because we did get none for the first year anniversary)

Really, the only thing that "dings" a point from the Baboon is it's a primate and Frontier hasnt' been that great with primates, same for Howler Monkey. And the Secretary Bird is a bird (no way LOL), and we know Frontier's not that great with those either.
The Primates require complex animations (climbing, swinging, grooming, playing etc) so takes lot of time to work on. But most Primates species are not popular among general players. Based on the Deladysigner's top 100 popularity list, 6 of 13 Primates in the game are absent which is about half number he only monkey that made it on the list is Capuchin (ranked #86), and the only Primate in the top 50 is Orangutan (ranked #35). If the Frontier goes through that vote result, they probably more hesitant to offer Primates.

Yeah but there were also just 2 antelope in the top 50 yet we keep getting them en masse, so that really cant be much of a factor

Short answer: maybe.

Long answer:

It really comes down to what Frontier decides to do, because in my opinion, the last ABC animals we truly need are the South American monkeys (we also need birds, but 1-2 more SA monkeys would satisfy me, every continent needs more birds) baboon, and a duck(s). To some extent everyone needs one of the top meta-wishlist animals, and for everyone one of them is their favorite. Realistically looking at how far we have come we have long passed the ABC animals and have entered into necessary, but ultimately niche, animals for the respective continents (once again only birds are exempt from this). Make no mistake I am also guilty of this: the American black bear is very important for making a proper zoo for North Americans like me. Ultimately though, we already have the universal ABC animals for North America such as the bison, alligator, and grizzly. While I would use the ABB over the grizzly, it is the prototypical bear for North America. So that just begs the question: do I find it necessary, would its inclusion prevent me from making the zoo of my dream? The answer is anywhere from no, to maybe. Especially when modders can take over for animals like the ABB, and do an amazing job while at it. I could never make an American zoo without bison, or alligators though.

The fact of the matter is, this final pack will probably have only 8 or so species of animals in it. If we are lucky, Frontier will see the writing on the wall and try to add as many animals as possible. That comes down to staff, money, and time, and Frontier mostly likely has none of that working in their favor right now. More power to them though, even if it isn’t what I like they always produce amazing products.

For me it all comes down to birds in the end. Which I have said this before, birds are absolutely “filler” animals. Outside of Flamingos or penguins, they won’t be the stars of the zoo. Still I find them as a whole to be a necessity. They can have great interspecies bonuses, flesh out dedicated areas, and work to better diversify your zoo. Still, birds would need a pack bigger than any to find me anywhere close to “satisfied”. Despite everything they are so important to me and the zoo experience.
After visiting a number of zoos I made a thread about 12 bird species I thought were necessary to create “tropical houses”. Many zoos have them, and you can recreate them in Planet Zoo. Still, without the proper bird species to fill them they can feel empty to me. Like something is missing. Because something is missing! It’s the birds flying overhead, it’s all the animals living together and almost recreating the real habitat they share. I don’t just want the white faced whistling duck because I love birds and ducks (which I do!) but also because of its ability to represent multiple continents. This cute little duck can have an interspecies bonus with so many animals in the game from Africa and South America. All while also giving crucial dimension, personality, and flavor to our builds. The other 11 or so species I highlighted weren’t as variable, with the exception of some: roseate spoonbills and scarlet ibis can work in an Everglades build, and the hamerkop and wfwd can work in a Madagascar build. Still, the amount of birds I need aren’t due to them being absolutely crucial ABC animals. But because they add so much to my builds and zoos and I am crucially missing out on. For my North American prairies I have no burrowing owl, for my African Savannah I have no grey crowned crane or Guinea fowl, the mute swan has no other waterfowl to share with, for my tropical houses I have no scarlet ibis, Asia is missing pheasants like the golden pheasant, so on and so forth. I’m coming to terms with it now, but without mods some of the most basic bird species are just gonna be lacking.

So to fully answer the question, I cannot be fully satisfied, but I can be made happy enough. Here is what I request for the final dlc:

  1. For the African baboon I would pick the Hamadryas baboon. It really is a no brainer. While I would love to get a tropical monkey for Africa, like the black and white colobus or debrazza’s monkey, the baboon should be enough for me. It’s not to say I won’t miss the other monkeys, I will, but I can “live without them”.
  2. For South America, I will take at least one more monkey. It could be any of the 3-5 species people have mentioned over the past month. I am not picky, I would be equally happy with anything. I will highlight the black howler monkey for being high on the meta wishlist, and the golden lion tamarin due to its relevant zoo conservation story.
  3. I made my case over it, but the white faced whistling duck is the most versatile duck we could get. At least as far as interspecies bonuses, also considering its status as a tropical duck it wouldn’t be a “generic duck” you would find in a pond. But the mandarin duck and mallard duck also have their uses. The former being the quintessential exotic duck, the later being a versatile species. Unlike the wfwd the mallard is a generic duck, for better or worse.
  4. Finally, just one more bird. It could be anything. If the Oceania pack could get two birds, this final pack could as well. Shoot, I would be ecstatic if we even got three. For South America I’m gonna highlight the scarlet ibis, but I would love to give it to our buddy the grey crowned crane as well.
  5. Edit: I forgot to mention, but getting one more domestic would be nice. I’m not gonna change the rest of my post, but considering how common they are I would happily take a domestic goat. Add them in with the llama and my farm area would be passible enough.
Any other animal I don’t mention would be welcomed to me. If I had my way the final pack would be all birds and monkeys. Considering I don’t represent the community at large it’s good I don’t make the decisions regarding that. Simply put, outside of bird and monkeys, every other animals is a welcome bonus. They just aren’t as “necessary” to me.

Like satisfy me with the roster as a whole or satisfy me as a pack in itself?

If it is a SA animal pack or even a scenery pack with the right choices i would be satisfy with the pack as a DLC

but if there is only just one pack left nothing will satisfy me completly in regards of the game roster. I think there are too many animals that i still want to feel like nothing of importance is missing.

But Antelopes are much easier made than the Primates, that is the difference. Making Primates is like thankless work (although I would like to see more Primates, I can't represent the general players' taste)

Cant imagine using 1 of the 4 unused monkey rigs is that much harder than reskinning the antelops
Tbf most monkeys and primates have a lot of fur textures that vary primate to primate, so it might be a similar situation to feathers where it takes a bit to perfect the fur, e.g baboon and it’s pooffy fluff. Antelopes on the other hand have a similar thin coat to each other that have the same textures.

Fair points. None of the other 7 meet all of the criteria here, and you're right about the fact we haven't gotten an African primate in DLC as yet. And it would be Africa's only second monkey.

For the criteria on the other 6
Meta List popularity - well, all six: Secretary Bird, Muskox, Walrus, Coati, Howler Monkey, Tree Kangaroo
ABC animal (generally recognized animal) - Walrus - seriously though, the others are not ABC animals IMO.
Common in zoos (not that this is something Frontier always goes by) - Howler Monkey
Existing rig to at least start out with - Mandrill, Howler (thinking the P. Monkey) Muskox (maybe?) Walrus (Grey Seal maybe?)

Adding in : Regional need - Coati, Howler Monkey, Tree Kangaroo

Really, the only thing that "dings" a point from the Baboon is it's a primate and Frontier hasnt' been that great with primates, same for Howler Monkey. And the Secretary Bird is a bird (no way LOL), and we know Frontier's not that great with those either.

Really, all of this is why I think the Walrus has the least chance of the 7. The most recognized here, yes. That's it other than Meta List ranking, which is why they're talked about. They do not have any other point in the favor and it's why I think if any dont' get included, it'll be the Walrus. Tree Kangaroo is at the same point on this structure, only here for regional need not counting meta list popularity.

All 5 others I can see making it in.
How is the coati not getting a "common in zoos" point when according to ZTL it is held in over 450 zoos? Way more common than the howler. Also I do not see why it would need a new rig, coati could easily use the raccoon rig.

oh weird. I left it off and then realized I left it off, and added it in. Maybe the edit didn't save. I'll add it back up to the original post. Definitely common in zoos.

I feel like two to three more packs would be ideal. IMO we really need a South America focused Animal Pack that's got at least two birds & monkeys, a Scenery pack with some Domestics, and an Exhibit Pack/Overhaul. This would allow me to make a more realistic Zoo recreation.

i got the chance to head to the zoo last week and i really want hamadryas, and small primates, marmosets, tamarins, smaller monkies - frontier please. also birds

I'm not entitled to an opinion, having not played the game yet, but it does seem obvious one last 50% bigger DLC won't really satiate anybody (I've doubts that any reasonable amount of DLC would truly satiate permanently).

With custom animations being possible with mods now, it does seem like a matter of time before there's entirely custom rigs and interactions, so any types sorely missed seem likely to be well covered by the community eventually.

Console edition of course doesn't have that outlook, but by the time those desires take hold, there shouldn't be any expectation of new content, so no reason to dwell on it.

Like you havent played PZ?

I can't begin to tell you how badly we need more primates and how badly I want more primates! That and birds both aviary/flying, waterfowl, and non flying. 😬
I won't lie, if Frontier wanted to absolutely catch us blindside and deliver on flying exhibit type birds, that would honestly be both the most unexpected and satisfying pack they could possibly produce at this point, at least for me. But that's not going to happen and I've accepted that. Just saying if for some reason it were....nothing would make me happier.

But primates and habitat birds, absolutely, we should have more of than we do.

I'm waiting for console edition. I've a handed down laptop that can't really run many games, but I don't really want to replace it.

I've been playing the JWEs since 2018, got a used PS4 before launch to play it (as a kid I played on a PS2, so it was a comfort/nostalgia choice), been a little too invested in its future, up until December (I got so much more out of other games, but the continued support format is addictive to talk about).

I remember seeing the South America pack launch for PZ, even though I wasn't really that interested at the time, the scale just seemed to blow JWE1 out of the water. I was loosely following DLCs until about the Europe pack (when JWE2 released).

I've looked up a fair bit about the game and DLCs, I was strongly compelled to a week or two ago.

At this point I don't mind how long it'll take to wait as long as they give us DLC. Even if it takes half a year with two DLCs per year.😅😅
this as long as we are getting a steady stream of dlc I dont mind waiting longer
It's funny how the crowd that asked for consoles on DLC announcements was swapped out for crowd asking for DLCs on Console announcements 🔄
what will the people complain about once dlc and console are announced.
I mean, are there? Do we really need the tree kangaroo?
I mean by international standards yes oceania is done the echidna and tree kangaroo would cover the most glaring spots but arent necessary for an international audience. However due to a variety of reason almost every zoo in oceania is predominately native animals with many zoos being entirely native based so for me and many other people from the region alot of animals are still missing. Some of the biggest missing ones are any desert monitor, short beaked echidna, a possum and a tree kangaroo.
