It was down. Even took the forums offline for a few minutes.

Seems odd to have the forums on the same machines that run the game though. o_O

Yep. I thought I was going to end up with a failed transport mission, cargo flagged as stolen in my hold, and a bounty on me as the minutes ticked down to mission time out again. Got back in just in time.

That is something that needs dealing with, btw. The mission time limits are too restrictive.

I wouldn't mind seeing the timers pause when you're offline. I like that they're 'real time' as opposed to 'game time' when you're playing, but having them continue to burn when you're offline seems more punitive than it needs to be.

I expect timers for final game to have more sensible time frames. These I think are done with purpose for people to stress test missions, and get rep increases and decreases quickly, so FD could look up how it's working.

Started playing after a long hiatus (Prem Beta 1) to see what changed and what I will do after the wipe. First attempt in minig, I only had a mining laser and a refinery, no cargo. Could not sell my refined minerals/metals. Bought back a cargo bay to do some more missions to buy a refinery and cargo capacity to find out it does not work. Same error as the OP posted. I sold the refinery with content, maybe a cause for the bug? How do I solve this issue, does anyone know?

I had the same issue. It seems to occur when you leave something in a refinary bin when you last used it and then install a new refinary, or even if you just upgrade to a better refinary.

The workaround is to jettison whatever is in the refinary bin (there's a little eject icon next to the bin info), it will then work with whatever new materials you scoop up.

Hope this helps.

When the servers are shut down...

I'm quite happy to play in mutiplayer or solo mode, but having made a substantial investment in ED I am concerned that I have invested £750 in software that will be useless in (say) four or five years' time when the servers are retired (servers are always retired eventually when it becomes uneconomic to run, maintain and administrate them).

I still play Frontier and Elite now, and so I would expect to be doing the same with ED in twenty or thirty years' time.

I am therefore very interested in David Braben's comments in newsletter 50. However I am slightly wary of them, given the poor communication of the cancellation of offline mode; it could easily be something said to placate those users, like myelf, angry at the removal of that mode of play:

What is Frontier's plan for when the servers shut down?

We do not plan to shut the servers down, but understand it is a reasonable question. We are at the beginning of the game not the end and are focused on creating a game that we hope will be played for many years in the future. We do plan to take regular archives of the game and the servers, to preserve the game for the future.

Could the server code be released publicly some day when the servers are shut down?

Yes. This is something we would do if for whatever reason we cannot keep the game going.

This would be fine for me as it would mean that I could still play the game.

So, the questions:

1. Does the game currently support the use of a local server, i.e. being able to repoint the game to a local address? If not, when can we expect this?

2. Could the server code be released earlier just so I can have it safe on my hard drive, should Frontier ever go into administration? In the case of administration then the adminstrators would presumably want to sell the server code as an asset and the new owners may not want to release the code.

3. Could the server code be held in escrow perhaps in the case of administration?

The game hasn't even released yet, and all you guys talking about the end of days like you expect Frontier to go under within 5 years. Have you really so little confidence in them as a company? Instead of clamoring for a guarantee of what YOU get IF they have to shut down their servers, why not put your efforts into promoting the game and sharing the wonders of this new and exciting galaxy with as many people as you can, thereby ensuring its longevity?

If anything kills off this game, it will be at least in part this type of negative bet-hedging. On behalf of Frontier and those of us who know this game will be great fun and a total success (in spite of the over-blown reactions to one PR mistake) please stop planning for its failure. You only invite the realization of those fears.

Edit: When I say "you guys" I mean everyone who posted stuff like this since last Friday. This is hardly the first post of its kind, and is beyond irrelevant given the Newsletter that was posted today, and the current state of the game (PRE-RELEASE!).

I think I am quite entitled to ask the question given the size of my investment. I am quite happy to enthuse about the game if I feel secure in it.

And these are questions that are not negative but are constructive.

It is naive to think that Frontier will always keep the servers running.
