Piracy vs npcs in odyssey 2024

Hello, new to this Yarr! Malarkey.
And it's great fun, specially the bumping bit.
I'm using a krait ll with beams (efficient flow) and some seekers and packhounds.
I tried rails but they ended up destroying the npc, as regards disabling fsd, engines, etc.
So my 1st question is, are cannons better? If not what?
2nd question..
Anarchy, agriculture, boom. But all I'm finding is everything but ltds.
Tried refinery too same results, am l missing something?
Filling the fc with all kinds of stolen goodies.

Hi and welcome to the fold cmdr!
To disable drives seeker missiles are easiest, but dumb fires work as well. Otherwise cannons with high yield shell, but they have severely reduced damage and are still only 50% explosive damage.
The krait MKII is a great ship for piracy, I would fit two seeker missile launchers plus laser weapons of your choice for shields.

By the way, it’s no longer agricultural systems, the best one are usually industrial now, try Frog, but nowadays even mining ships don’t necessarily carry mining minerals. Another option is piracy at a station, which seems to be more reliable in that mining ships do normally have LTDs (try McArthur city at Kurughnaye). You can disable ships there as they arrive, just don’t shoot the station! ;-)

High yield shell is not great for exterior modules. It's better for killing ships than robbing them. Missiles are definitely the way to go.

I've been trying to use unique ships for various roles (no repeats) and I've got a few ships that I haven't built out yet. I've never tried NPC piracy, so it's a good opportunity to have a think about what could work. Would a Mamba or FdL work? I guess it's lasers for shields, missiles to knock out the thrusters, and then cargo, and collector/hatch breaker limpets?

Kk I've been experimenting.
And long range rails at say, 3km from target ( Once I've reduced shields to zero) seem quite efficient at internal module destruction.
So I've got seekers/packhounds, 2 long range rails and an uber beam. Now I'm smoking !!
The seekers are good at external module destruction.
Now it's just a question of slowing the poor victim down whilst I loot

They would work, but just don’t have enough cargo space, the best ship overall in my opinion for npc piracy would be the python.

Mmm
Just been to an industrial/refinery anarchy asset, in boom. And plotted up outside the orbital. As the npcs approached I wacked em with a hatchbreaker as 1st contact. If they didn't have cargo I'd let em go. If they did its looting riot!
Got lucky with ltds and platinum, as well as other high end stufz.
So yeah seems refinery might have a part to play.
Which does make sense.

If you scan them for cargo before they enter the slot they freak out and do a loop back before attempting to enter again, so you can keep hatch breaking on each loop. Mind you, cargo gets dumped all over the place so the longer range collectors the better.

Yeah gotta engineer another fast manifest scanner this long range one too slow.
I've found an orbital where I can just do as you said in previous post.
Had a conda stuck in the letterbox shedding cargo dead panic mode hehe...oddly he didn't fire at me.
Then a type 9 which took ages to loot.
It's not for £££ that's for sure which is a shame.
But the gameplay loop is hilarious 😂
This stolen loot does have one big asset though. If through bgs activity I've gotta depose a controlling faction who happens to have a black market, this shedload of loot will definitely have an impact on their influence.
So I'm just storing it on the fc till such a time arises.

Once again.....its not about money.
Yeah getting ltds is fab! But that's not WHY piracy is such fun.
Little footnote
If you wanna reduce a factions influence, and they have a black market, selling stolen goods is a very effective way.
