The Buckyball Racing Club presents: POP GUN:BUCKYBALL, race 3 of the Triple 8 Championship

Here are my race tactics too.

General route was:

Enoch -> Matarov -> Lucent -> Misty Pool

The route came primarily from my regulation runs. Was less important for unlimited I think but I mostly just stuck with it for familiarity.

So Enoch first since closest to drop-in point. Then Matarov to start the group of 3 near body 2 (mostly since jump from Matarov back to CT Tucanae was always obscured so didn't seem to make sense as the last). Then Lucent and Misty in that order so I could start overheating the ship in silent running while boosting away from the asteroids around Misty (which was far less of a thing at Lucent). For my final iEagle runs however I swapped those two (since jump from Misty back to Tucanae became obscured). In fact that probably worked better since you could turn on silent running right at the start of the Lucent section, keep it on for the entire trench up to the cargo scan, and then leave it on while boosting away and charging for the jump back to the start.

*1 that said, looking at Ozric's times, it clearly made a lot of sense in regulation!

In regulation I did experiment with jumping out to another system from Matarov and then back again to finish at Enoch but I found there was literally nothing in it. I did wonder about finishing on Enoch with two jumps back to the start but couldn't see how that would be an improvement.

Perhaps the most interesting bit then became getting from Matarov to Lucent/Misty since they were always just below the horizon. That meant an incredibly hard to pull off burst of SCO past the horizon and curving around 2E to Lucent/Misty, a stunt I never fully pulled off to my complete satisfaction.

As for lining up the approaches to the individual stages: for the FC yard I found that approaching Enoch with the star behind it worked as a general rule of thumb with a bit of on the day tweaking. For Matarov I made the exact same approach to a patch of flat green ground I had memorised that was exactly 15km away from the target. For the Lucent you could use the (albeit reversed) hologram and for Misty I always came from outside the rings heading inwards (I never tried going through Misty from the other side, too much invested memory re: the layout of the satellite and tunnel to mess with that).

Here's my Matarov approach.

ixLuBvS.jpeg

So I used that line between green and brown as my high altitude guide, ultimately aiming to land in the green circle which is just by that little notch of brown that crosses the line.

Final approach showing the green circle landing spot, just to the left of those crags. Landing area was smooth and 15km from target (just had to be careful not to overshoot).

Using the same approach every time meant I knew exactly where the PWR building was and could hit it from a distance.

Ok settle down ladies, we’ve got a lot to get through, here’s the last update for this mission and it looks like some of you have been keeping your powder dry…

CMDR Sir Boundness. It’s an honour to have a bonafide knight here sir, I’m real glad you stuck at it. You had a solid run in Regulation that sees you claim your place there, and a similar story for Unlimited that sees you improve your time too. Nice job.

I see there was quite a few 'first submission late shows to the party' today, and here we have the first one.

CMDR Draig Seren it’s good to see you, but aww damn son. In Regulation you scanned the wrong container at Lucent Embrace and you didn’t scan the satellite at Misty Pool. Lots have done the same so don’t go too hard on yourself. Ramming the power coupling at Misty did a great job of destroying it though. Now I know why your Cobra looked so beat up when it came back earlier. Plus your bombing run was on an entirely different planet… 2 E CMDR, not 2 B…
What’s weird though is that you did scan the satellite and bomb the correct planet in Unlimited. But. You still scanned the wrong container… Sorry CMDR. DQ.

CMDR jspace, good to see you here too. Your Regulation run was solid except you also scanned the wrong container at the Lucent Embrace, so I can’t accept it. On the plus side, we do now know where there’s a stash of Lavian brandy that CMDR PolarBruski might just want to go and liberate for me. DQ

Every other submission today was by those that were looking to shoulder each other out of the way on both successful mission boards.

CMDR Shaye Blackwood. I do not have words. What you did out there today was just magical son. It’s been a privilege having you in the squadron for this mission. You improved your Unlimited time to something I did not expect was possible. Congratulations.

CMDR Raiko, you also improved your time on the Regulation board with another excellent run. It’s been great watching you fly too. Great campaign CMDR, thank you for your service.

Von Brandt, you’ve been busy CMDR! Two submissions in Unlimited and one in Regulation. Your second Unlimited run was absolutely by the numbers and a good improvement. Well done CMDR. I didn’t bother checking the first as this one was quicker.
Just a tip, when I said you need to hit the Matarov PWR centre, I did not mean ram it with your ship. I guess that works too though and you fired a missile at it for good measure. Good Regulation run improvement CMDR.

CMDR Leroy Jethro Tull, you confused me for a minute there, entering your Sidewinder in the Regulation race on the submission form, but I can let that go. The only man that never made a mistake never did anything.
It was a good job you were in a Sidey too given where you found a landing spot on 2 E, at the top of a hill. I had a little chuckle at that. Probably the only ship that could land there. Your run was good and you improved up the Unlimited board CMDR. Well done. Glad to see you’ve chosen a name for your ship that’s a little bit more respectful than the last one. You flew well pilot.

CMDR Kevin the Stabber. Close call with the missile strike in the carrier construction yard when your first attempt went straight between the elements, but you saw that and nailed it with a second. Good job. You made it a little difficult for me to see if the scan had completed on the Misty Pool satellite with all that boost button spamming, but again you got the job done and boy did you improve your time. Fantastic. Congratulations CMDR you can go play with your knives again now.

CMDR Alec Turner. It’s been quite a ride this last week hasn’t it son? It’s good to see you saved your best ‘til last too. Good job backing that baby up a little to stay undetected on 2 E. Also helpfully your computer told me it was the 49th time you’d landed there. That’s dedication to the cause pilot. You followed that with a beautiful strike on the PWR centre and a perfectly timed overheat at Lucent Embrace. You know how to turn and burn CMDR. Great job.

CMDR PolarBruski. This is beyond fashionably late, but I guess that’s just how you roll. I see you nearly bought the farm at Matarov, but thankfully the damage only looks superficial and the boys are doing a great job fixing her up. What a phenomenal run you put together and I particularly enjoyed your soundtrack and celebratory cockpit dance at the end, but the best bit was when you ‘buzzed the tower’ of the Penny Benjamin. The clean up crew are still picking up bits of window pane and chairs from the observation deck. Welcome to the Unlimited class successful mission board, you were so close to Blackwood it was unreal.
There might just be a problem with your Regulation submission, but I can only work with what’s given to me, and the run submitted was good. You’re on the board CMDR. Just not as high as I was anticipating. Well done.

Wait a second everyone, we have a very late entry here and a new CMDR joins the fight. Welcome Scorpio Dukat. Let’s see how you did. Ok, first hurdle wasn’t entirely cleared as I didn’t see your full loadout, and unfortunately you scanned the wrong satellite at Misty Pool, so I’m afraid it’s mission failure CMDR. DQ. Otherwise that was a great effort in your first race, and they’re not always as complex as this mission was. Don’t be discouraged, you’ve got the makings of a true nutjob. You’ll fit in just right son.

Great campaign pilots, you can sleep in your beds tonight knowing you made a difference.

Dismissed.

Right! That’s enough of keeping up this ridiculous pretence, the real Caelum Incola is back in the room.

Firstly, it has been an absolute honour and a privilege to host the Buckyball Racing Club’s 100th race. It was never planned that way, but Alec told me it was a special one a week or two beforehand, so I was hoping it would go well and I’d do the club proud. Your comments thus far have been very gratefully received, thank you so much CMDRs.

Massive thanks to all for running with this outrageous theme, nonsense and banter for the duration of the event, it’s kept me sane whilst I’ve been working out here in Angola, laughing at all the chat in Discord and here on the forums. I go back to the UK in a few days for a month or so, and I’ll see some of you at ECM in August, so you can berate me there for all the DQs. 🙂

Secondly, sorry(ish) if there were a few too many hoops to jump through, and for being such a stickler for the rules, but I felt that if I’d let one thing go then it would have just been chaos. Thank you for being good sports and sticking with it. Would I run it exactly the same again? 100%. Most that made one or two mistakes early on ran again perfectly (most of the time) and then the times really started to drop.

For info, Bruski said I now hold the record for the most disqualifications in any race ever. The total was 19, out of 71 submissions over the course of the event. I can live with that. War is a hard, messy business ;)

That’s enough words from me now I think. My fingers are sore and I need a lie down. See you all in the Black!

Wow, that's closer on the board than in a while. I need to start practicing. 😰
Great race idea Caelum, and the race updates have never been more fun to read.

Congratulations or commiserations (especially do those unfortunate enough to not get a valid run on the board) to everyone.

Route was the one most of us went with it seems: Enoch -> Lucent -> Misty Pool -> Matarov with the overheating bonus being done planetside on the run up to Matarov. Even then I could barely get it past 250% and I'm too lazy/cheap to engineer a suboptimal powerplant just for this race.

This was a great experience, even for me just being around in holographic form*...
It was a lot of fun to read, exactly the distracting fun I needed in these trying times. I just wish I realized earlier that this was the thread to look for regarding the race updates.
And now that y'all share some videos of your runs, I can look and learn some more, in particular about the new SCO FSD, which still was in planning when I set out into the void.

*: I even had a little story to share if the Captain would have taken notice of my hologram popping up...

I entered this nonsense, got started late but built a ship that goes too fast and blew up a bunch making these runs. So here I am at the very last moment... not breaking any records but entering anyway because one way or another, I did it :)
Saw you at The Sepulchre, sorry I didn't have time to stop and say Hi, but Hi and Welcome now instead :D

And now, off to HIP 20567 for a Titan-bombing run or 3. #ForTheDecal!

Welcome to the mad house commander and congratulations on getting a run in (although whether or not it makes it past the drill sergeant here remains to be seen, he's a bit of a ball buster I'm afraid!) ;)

I appreciate the welcoming vibes and sure, quote me if you like, though there are better ones out there ;)

Ah, didn't realize the full loaded was needed in Unlimited, nor that there were multiple satellites at Misty Pools that would pop a message when scanned. Rules are rules though so I understand. Next time I'll try to get a submission in with enough time to iron out my mistakes :)

Looking forward to the next one regardless of placing this time. Hearing I've "got the makings of a true nutjob" is reward enough for the effort thus far 😁

Well CMDRs, what a difference 24 hours makes. I’m almost lost for words with your submissions today pilots.

Almost. Don’t get too excited. Here come a lot of words.

There’s movement at the top of the Unlimited successful missions board that’s bordering on seismic, and the Poseidon that’s caused them is somewhat predictably CMDR Shaye Blackwood.

Son, you must carry around your own secret souped up Alcubierre drive or something because that was frankly astonishing. Either that or your hydrogen fuel comes from some secret lab somewhere out in Fullerene C60. You’re gonna make a few jaws drop among the gathered throng here in the hangar tonight when they see that time on the board. You got beat up a little at Misty Pool and Matarov, but overall, wow, great job, and in the Cobra too! Fantastic.

CMDR Raiko, I saw your Unlimited run before Blackwood’s and I was about to say similar girly-gushy things to you too if he hadn’t just casually come along behind you and bent physics. You had a great run and really raised the bar for Turner or Sulu to try and get over, but today just wasn’t your day. I like the uprated landing gear you found under a dusty cover in the back of the hangar too. Makes those landings just a little bit softer, which is a good thing given how hard you came down on 2E. We can get that pad fixed on Penny Benjamin too, don’t worry. Amazing work pilot, just amazing.
Also, welcome to the Regulation board. Your solid run puts you right in the thick of the action. We both know you can go quicker though. I believe in you.

Next we have.. CMDR Leeya Geddy. Nice run, but only just. I saw zero metres per second at the container for the shortest amount of time my old eyes could pick up. Almost had to disappoint you there pilot, but you’re on the board. Well done.

Kevin The Stabber, it seems like you’ve put down the sharp implements and concentrated on your attack runs today CMDR. Nice clean flight suit too. A great mission today sees you improve your time on the Regulation board right up to the top spot. Excellent work.

Breathing right down your neck is our very own Papa bear, CMDR Bruski. Or at least he would have been had he engaged silent running at the container! I had a visit by a security detachment from the Lucent Embrace earlier, wondering why (more than) one of our ships was showing an interest in their cargo!
I told them that I did not know, but rest assured I’d review what my pilots had been getting up to and get to the bottom of it. They left with some Lavian Brandy from my own personal stash which I DO want replacing.
Turn your damn silent running on next time CMDR!

CMDR Myxlplyx73. Great to see you back in the fray again after your first attempt went a bit sideways earlier this week.
Ok first, you hit launch, stayed on the pad, chose your destination, then left the pad. The timer starts as soon as you hit launch for these missions kid, but me being the kindly, benevolent guy I am I’ll…

Stop that sniggering Turner.

As I was saying, me being generous and all that, I’ll accept the start time you submitted given you’re a greenhorn, kid, but don’t let it happen again.
You hit all the markers at the carrier construction yard, good.
The Lucent Embrace though, almost. Same as Bruski, who seems to be a little teary eyed right now, you did not engage silent running at the container. No wonder those guys that came to see me earlier were upset. For that I’m afraid it’s mission failure.
At Misty Pool, the first satellite you scanned was the correct one, no need to do the others, otherwise good.
Matarov, great. So other than that silent running and the launch, good job. Time for a few more runs yet kid. I know you can do it.

CMDR Sulu you ripped that little Sidewinder round there like it was on fire. Which to be fair, it was at one point. That great hustle sees you improve your time on the Unlimited board.

What a day, aviators. What a day.

Dismissed.

Many thanks for the constructive words, i didn't have a lot of time to practice and kicked myself forgetting the silent run. Like a school report......could try harder.

I’d just like to thank @Caelum Incola for not only hosting this crazily complex race, but all the brilliant write up's as well. Following this thread helped ease some of the frustration at how busy the end of June was in real life. I’ve got to wonder if my dad’s massive number of siblings scattered across the country simply to provide a good excuse to decline a party invitation. “Sorry, we can’t make it, it’s a four hour flight just to get there! See you at the reunion!”

My congratulations to everyone who completed a run. I never got out of the planning stage, and it had me considering trying out solutions to display a checklist in VR.
