The Buckyball Racing Club presents: Zombaland (Triple Eight Championship, Race 5)

So it begins!
And I’m stuck at work!

Thankfully, as I was going through my opening procedures, realized I don’t actually need to try to cobble together a decent medium sized racer out of existing components shipped in from elsewhere. Elegance of Purpose, my mission running Python Mk I, is on site and would probably do pretty well at this race.

Still going to give Haulier than Thou the honor of the first attempt, though. ;)

Got a small handful of submissions so far, all verified. I'll probably hold off doing a leaderboard update until tomorrow afternoon some time when I have a few more entries.

If you were the only person who'd submitted unlimited up until now then you're winning! And the other person besides you who submitted a regulation run? You're also winning.

Mind you, I just did a run of my own but I'll hold off submitting that until our leaderboard engineer Bruski has figured out how to keep me off the podium!

I am sure - I am not the only one to whom this happened ....

A quick announcement. I originally suggested that the latest moment to capture the screenshot marking the start of the SRV Racer section could be grabbed just after selecting to deploy the SRV as the camera pans back up. I've since learned that unless you have an extra wide field of view you won't be able to see the minutes or seconds of the time at this point. So just capture the latest moment with the HUD clock visible that you can. Since the time for the SRV stage is effectively divided by 4 in the bonus calculation, and since it only takes 3 seconds from looking down to deploy the SRV to looking back up again, it hopefully won't matter too much. Maybe hang on to video recordings of your run just in case we end up needing to check this carefully for a tie breaker!

Oh, and one other thing. If you find you can't drive the SRV back under your ship (because of terrain, etc) then feel free to hop out on foot, run to the blue boarding circle, board the ship that way and just leave the SRV behind.

OK Zomba hunters, I think it's time for our first leaderboard.

In Regulation class we have just two entries, a very early first submission from Cmdr Epaphus armed with the ever effective shotgun (but as yet no Buurs sighted) and then a "safe and unadventurous" run from Ozric (one of the true champions of regulation class) who's getting more up close and personal with a classic chainsaw to hack his way through to an early pole position.

Meanwhile, over in unlimited class we had another early run from Epaphus in a trusty Hauler (who's really smashing the SRV stages here by the way!). A few hours later, flying an Eagle Mk II and choosing to take out Buur with an "axe in the head", we have Cmdr "I'm so brute force I've now destroyed over 1000 ships" Sulu who, in an absolutely beautiful twist of irony, is so far the only pilot to not only attempt but completely ace the Gentle Lander bonus ... love it!!!

Currently bringing up the rear (which is fine 'cos it was just a "scouting run") and waving a terrifying "stick" at the undead (at least put a fish on the end of it, I gather Buur absolutely hates that!) is Sir Boundness flying a Type-9 Heavy (OK, forget the stick, just land on him), and last but absolutely not (nor ever) least is the infallible Shaye Blackwood flying a checks notes Cobra Mk IV, who takes the lead wielding (as seems entirely appropriate for this supreme Buckyballer) an extremely efficient and effective Katana ... swooooosh! and that head is coming off, one scarf (slightly soiled) now for sale!

Just wanted to end with a quick shout of appreciation for Bruski who's been working furiously in the background (for all the races this year) automating the process of turning your race submissions into these fabulous leaderboards.

Time for another look at the Zombaland leaderboards.

First it's regulation class where we see Epaphus coming back harder and faster with an orbital bomardment of SRVs (it's the only way to be sure) closing the gap between himself and Ozric to just XX seconds! Then Sir Boundness (who's T-9 was so fat it could land in two Zomb systems at once) enters the fray, eschewing conventional weapons for an invitation to the pub (plus a 100% gentle landing bonus). And lastly yours truly unashamedly enters his own race carrying the Left4Dead electric guitar (such a satisfying PANG! when it makes contact with the Zombuur skull). My time would have put me in 3rd place (despite having to leave my SRV behind) but alas race organisers are not allowed on the podium of their own race as that is generally considered unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Over in unlimited class we see a similar trio of enties. Shaye comes back still swinging the Katana with a 100% gently landed run in which he doesn't reckon' he can improve anything, and frankly, looking at that time, I would kinda hope not! Next is Sir Boundness, swapping the Type-9 for a far more sensible Eagle Mk II, and swapping the stick for some far less sensible "plants" ..

.. he ploughs on despite landing zone infringements locking him out of the mission terminals and still manages a pretty significant improvement. And lastly, not knowing the meaning of propriety , yours truly enters a run that would be in 2nd but mutter mumble grumble rules and that.

The question about the preferred anti-zombie-weapon had me thinking...

First I thought of a set of Tesla coils, which I could use to make some music when I'm not slaying zombies. But I discovered some issues with that idea. One would be the portability of three or four Tesla coils, the other the means of power supply. Since I couldn't find a meaningful solution to these problems, I decided to look into some more conventional solutions.
I managed to whittle the selection down to two entries, but I'm not sure which of the two I would prefer in such a situation - the Vulcan Lirpa or a Klingon Bat'leth...
