She's a beauty! (New ship revealed--Mandalay)

It's effectively paid DLC. It might be paid DLC only temporarily, but nevertheless it fits the definition perfectly.

Paid DLC is not in itself considered "pay-to-win", unless it confers a clear advantage in PvP over those who have not purchased it. A non-combat exploration ship will hardly give a significant advantage in PvP.

You might not like that ED has paid DLC, but you can't in good consciousness call it "pay-2-win" when it doesn't fit that definition in any way.

to me having this 2 tier system - pay for early access or wait for free - is the best win-win situation for all players. those who are eager, can support their enthusiasm (and the game) with real cash whereas those who are patient can build up their anticipation then join in the fun later. i have never bought any arx, merely collecting them every week for the past 5 yrs (save for a fortnight when i had to be away) yet i have all the ship kits and paint jobs i desire. i don't feel disadvantaged in any way. if anything i appreciate and thank players who contribute financially to elite dangerous as a going concern.

It will be nice to have a new exploration ship available, but the design feels unbalanced like the back half of the fuselage is missing. Some dihedral rather than anhedral on the wings would have also been nice.

No worse than the Clipper looking like someone took a chainsaw to a 737. Actually, it looks much better than that. 😛

The ship itself, I like the look of.

Given that the Type-8 won't be available until November (not sure if that is speculation or if Frontier have actually given a date), the Mandalay probably won't be available until February (no, I don't consider "if-you-pay-arx-for-it" to be available).

Which, as far as Elite Dangerous goes, by that definition was the precedent set as far back as Horizons (especially Engineering).

But that misses the point; L'Académie française has not ruled to my knowledge on the official definition of pay-to-win and it would only be binding on a relatively small fraction of the French population if it did. Everyone can have their own personal line for what counts as an acceptable way to sell game content and what doesn't. Quibbling over whether it's pay to win or merely acheter un avantage dans un jeu informatique [1] isn't going to change that some people are fine with it (whatever it's called) and others aren't (whatever it's called).

No there has not been a formal confirmation from FD when the T-8 will be in a shipyard near you for credits, but no doubt will do so when they are ready.

Waiting for release is your (and other player's) own decision, me, I don't object to throwing a few quid at FD, as @Jack Winter mentioned, funding FD to the tune of £50 a year to play with new ships isn't exactly dreadful, they have been very slow in realising that raising funds by giving players the option to play with new toys early might benefit the game, I hope there are many more Arx shiops released!

The fun, for me at least, is reading some comments on new ships from folk who obviously want any / all of them but are averse to spending Arx (no matter how obtained) for them, then complain just how unfair it is that they are disadvantaged in comparison to me, or many of the players in the groups I hang out with, as we are buying the ships and flying them, usually from release day.

I'm fine with anyone not wanting to spend money on "their favourite game" because they spent £XXX many years ago, their choice, complaining about it though?
