Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Today, I bought, installed and engineered my first of the new FSDs.
Keeping a tab on the newest developments, I was aware of the gamechanging nature of the new SCO-FSDs.
But once again, theory is nice and all, but the practical experience is where it's at.
It was definitely of advantage to build on the experience of other commanders in regards of how to make the best use of this drive.
Holy supernova, what an acceleration. Reminds me of a nitrous shot in an internal combustion engine - on a wet road...
And on top of that, I gained around 2 ly jump range on the fully engineered Sirius FSD - stock! After engineering, it's more like ~5 ly.
It's great, but takes some getting used to, especially in a ship not really built for it (Krait Mk2).
I kept overshooting my targets the first days.

How's the heat? Are you burning through mats to manufacture heatsinks?

As I said, it was advantageous "being late to the party", as I was able to learn from the early birds. I only overshot once while travelling back and forth between Felicity and a nearby material trader.
And heat wasn't an issue in the TCS 01 Data Highway, as I used short bursts to get going and taking advantage of the overspeed after deactivating the overdrive, coasting along until the speed bottomed out. Rinse and repeat with ever increasing bottom line speed and you can easily cut the time to travel 135k ls from almost 10 minutes down to two or three.

I am thinking about putting an SCO in my Anaconda, I need to figure size and weight (they do come in different sizes, right?). It would come in handy in those newly discovered systems with companion stars that hundreds of thousands of Ls away. I've always declined to explore them, and I carry 128 tons of fuel.

You can only fit the "right" size in a ship, that will be an 8 in an Anaconda.

Edit size 6 SCO

Yes they do come in sizes and grades but (ninja'd) you can't fit an undersized SCO FSD.

I'm beating feet towards the crossbones nebula which seems eery with Penny's death having been foretold!

Her successor and possibly furture curator of the Noon Family pilot trust is being hatched meanwhile, somewhere in the back of my mind.

Thinkin it's another Louis L'Amour reference, too.

Got it, thanks for the info.

I'm out of town but certain you can install smaller FSDs. Not just the biggest size. FYI. Prove me wrong!

Well the shipbuilder tools, EDSY and Coriolis, will only display SCO drives the size of the slot in the ship. They display standard FSDs in all sizes available from the slot size and lower.

I just took Dolph Helmet to EDSY and its jump range is abouit 3.9LY with a 2A FSD. But with Increased Range and Deep Charge, I got it all the way to 6.01LY!

My memory isn't exactly photographic but I feel Rupee had tried using a smaller FSD at some point. Now I have doubts. Need to make port to try it. Maybe there's a DSSA port lurking near the skull and crossbones ahead

I just can't wait to see if I can get that full 6LY on the 2A and how fuel efficient it is baby

exploring brown dwarfs in the black. and searching for bios, geos and anything else that i don't want to see.

It was an SCO I was talking about not FSD's unless I need to replace both together. It's like adding propane to a diesel truck for a boost, reminds me of the old original Mad Max/Road Warriors movies (there's a newly released one also).

In game, it looks like all ratings of a size have the same weight - the size 4 SCO FSDs for my transport Dolphin "Starchaser" showed 10T for all ratings (A-E) when I went to eqip one of them. Confused me a little, to be honest.

It looks similar in game, if I remember correctly. But I will check the next time I'm on.

In EDSY, all ratings except "D" have the same weight. Curious.

Edit: It is correct. You are only able to install an SCO FSD of the slot size of your ship. The other sizes available are shown with an hatched overlay.
