DLC18 discussion and predictions

looking at the ratios of habitat animals per continent

we have
59 african 27.2%
59 asian 27.2%
31 north american 14.3%
25 european 11.5%
22 south american 9.7%
21 oceanic 10.1%

this paints a very interesting picture since a majority of people will comfortably say both europe and oceania are well represented / over represented but also say south america has been shafted in the roster but by pure volume they are pretty even and have been for a while. It is also interesting to see people are starting to complain about the african heavy roster but also not mentioning its tied with asia and asia mainly east asia is still the primary non south american region people say is the weakest

also south america has over a quarter of all exhibit animals in the game.

My guess is DLC announcement on Friday. Possible extra teasers throughout the week that will help us decide if it's a highlands animal pack or a grab-back Zookeeper Collection.

The more I think about last week's "tease," the more I'm leaning toward a reveal this week. And they didn't have to tease that image during the livestream. They could have told us about the free update, said they had more info coming about the DLC, and let that be that. It seems pretty clear they're priming to reveal sooner, rather than later...

They've wrapped up the console promo and will be looking toward the next thing. And they know people are going to be watching the socials. And they need something to post about, right?

So I think Monday through Wednesday will be all about the free update. Maybe a forum post breaking down the new features then posts on socials highlighting the new stuff: Showing off the new hats, maybe a new screenshot of the leopard, showing us the jelly cake, maybe some other things they have up their sleeves with the update they haven't mentioned yet. That could take us to Wednesday or Thursday, depending on how they do it... They could then re-share the teaser image and let people know (again) to pay attention to socials.

Then, boom... Reveal on Friday with the announcement that the pack is releasing on the 15th. That will give them about a week to reveal shots of each animal, put up the usual Dev Diary on Monday before the pack releases, etc.

Of course, there's another scenario where they reveal it sooner this week and drop the week of the 8th; the pack is bigger and they need more time or whatever; and so on. But the scenario above feels most likely to me.

If you look at it in the context of real-world "biodiversity," Europe, North America, and Australia are actually pretty good. South America and East Asia are really underrepresented.

Is this including Barnyard animals as part of the tally? I know they're tagged as being found on every continent besides Antarctica in the Zoopedia (which is annoyingly inconsistent with the past domestic camelids - the llama is South American but the alpaca is considered global), but I think when assessing how well-represented each continent is in-game they should be excluded for obvious reasons, at least outside their continent of origin. I don't think the likes of Tamworth pigs and Sussex chickens add to the representation of South America for example haha.

Regarding the Echidna, I do not think it is actually comming. Same as Secretary Bird and Impala. Why would these not be removed from the dictionary with the rest?

Echidna likely being a translation of the PZ song, Secretary being a random profession probably something from Planet Coaster and Impala is also from PC, I believe PC had Impala cars in it.

The removed words are probably what we should be looking at. So what is left?
Sifaka
Spurred Tortoise
Tree Kangaroo
Dik-Dik

What a weird mix. :D

Eurasian animals do tend to be thought of as European, and any species in the USA tends to be thought of as primarily North American.

Oceania is far away, Marsupials also die easily from stress, so it's not surprising that it's a limited pool, and therefore interest outside of Oceania.

There's certainly still a list of Oceanians that'd be nice to have, though that kind of applies to everything that exists: Echidnas, Tree Kangaroos, Numbat, Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat, Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby, Tammar Wallaby, Bilby, Gilbert's/Long-nosed Potoroo, Quolls, Bandicoots, Possums, Short-tailed Spotted Cuscus, Goannas/Monitors, Kakapo, Kagu, Nene, etc.

Goodfellow is still there, so not quite in the same category, leaving just the three Africans.

Pallas and Manul were definitely never there, so it could be effectively anything.

Is it? I have not found Goodfellow in the newest version (PC2 webside dictionary).

Edit: you are right, it did not find it when I wrote "good" for some reason.

Random question but what is yalls favorite theme category for packs? Biome/habitat based, location based or miscellaneous themes?
Tough one, as each has their clear pros and cons, but if i had to choose one its regional packs for the simple reason that they do the best job of fleshing out regions completly, including the weirder stuff.
Like the one real quality of arid being a regional instead of a biome pack is that we are now spoiled for choice especally regarding ungulates when building for north african deserts. This is objectivly pretty cool in general, but with the gap between dlcs it can suck quite abit when your not planning on building such an area or even worse just finished building one.
The biggest drawback though is that it can suck quite a bit when the area choosen is quite niche while other things are much needed, but even then they are still fullfilling an important job.
The best example of that was the oceania pack, with opinions being quite split about it between people that want to build oceanian zoos and were over the moon to not just get many more plants but also 2 fillery animals that are important for them but at the same time might aswell dont exist for anyone else without much harm being done with the quokka and the blue penguin, and all those who dont want to build in oceania and tend to stick with what they know from their local zoos, making it quite a nothing burger of a pack with all animals being either none existant or very rare outside of oceania.
Still the pack fullfilled an important role for the oceanian player base amd therefor is imo still a good pack, just not for everyone

Are people expecting an announcement on Friday then? Is it possible release is on Friday and we get a full announcement today?

So improbable that it becomes impossible.

  1. It would be the fastest turnaround we'd ever have seen for a PZ DLC.
  2. Releasing on a Friday is a nightmare. If there's a gamebreaking bug that they didn't notice they either have to wait until after the weekend to begin fixing it (aka, you'd not have your fix yet on Monday) and risk people getting angry; or you'd have to get people to come in on the weekend still not knowing if the bug is going to be finished by the end of the weekend (and weekend work is expensive).
Believe me, any developer will tell you not to release on Friday. We've got t-shirts for it 😂

Expecting might be a strong word, but i think its a possiblility we will see something on friday, although gut feeling says to me next week and release the week after.
Anouncement today and release on friday is really unlikely imo, they said look out for something in the next weeks, so revealing it not even one week later seems kinda weird

Yeah, it's case sensitive, so I just start from the second letter.
