DLC18 discussion and predictions

Honestly I don’t know what’s worse, the idea that Frontier didn’t see South America as interesting as we do, or just the fact it got very unlucky.
It's the combination of the two. Like, when you think of the themes of most packs, the packs that could have south american animals usually did. The only pack who's theme warranted more SA animals but didn't deliver was the Tropical pack.

Well considering how unlucky i am in general i'm not surprised South América got shafted 😂
I got curious so I decided to go over them one by one:
  1. Arctic - doesn't fit SA
  2. South America - duh, but was before animal packs were a thing
  3. Austrlia - doesn't fit
  4. Aquatic - 2 (and a half) south american animals out of 4
  5. South east asia - doesn't fit
  6. Africa - doesn't fit
  7. North america - doesn't fit, but we did get the cougar
  8. Europe - lol
  9. Wetlands - we got 2 south american animals in a global pack, pretty good
  10. Conservation - honestly I think that roster was very strong, but maybe they could find something from SA for this pack
  11. Twilight - here there were a few candidates had it been a nocturnal pack, but they were clearly going for a northern hemisphere temperate Halloweeny vibe, so SA doesn't fit here
  12. Grassland - 2+2 south american animals iut of 7+5, pretty great for a global pack that also covered other underserved regions
  13. Tropical - This was the main miss IMO. I love the water monitor, but this pack really warranted at least one more south american animal
  14. Arid - okay here they could have squeezed something, but the theme was clearly africa
  15. Oceania - lol no
  16. Eurasia - lol no
  17. Barnyard - Alpaca
  18. Zookeeper - Spectacled Bear, the main big carnicore missing from the continent in the game. Could have done more, but all picks in this pack were great.

So in conclusion I think South America mostly got shafted by the format, and needed one more dedicated pack like all the other continents got.

Yeah very possible. I mean i LOVE the building set from tropical, would not get rid of it at all, but tropical could've used at least one habitat SA animal and if it was a rainforest animal pack it would have covered a lot of what we are missing.

Arid had the problem of being hyperfocus on one general area of the world. If this one would have been a global Scrublands/desert pack then we could have got things like the rhea or mara.

And then the one i won't forgive them for is this last pack. With such a general theming the coati, a new world monkey and at least one bird would have fit perfectly. Not saying the animals aren't good but really there was no need for the Sifaka. All that work could have go to a new world monkey and the spectacled bear wasn't the most pressing animal we needed from SA, but it was popular SO i think it was rather inevitable.

Golden lion Tamarin in conservation instead of the Siamang would be pretty cool

Yeah i think SAs downfall really was that we just run out of packs.
Like with a dedicated revisit in form of an animal pack you could easily bring the continent well not into a perfect spot, but alteast in a decent one
I still don’t understand what happened with last year.

2023 packs:
  1. Tropical did revisit South America! With one animal, being the sloth in the WTE. Other than that, we got two Asian and two African animals.
  2. Arid was all African and middle eastern animals.
  3. Oceania visited Australia and New Zealand.
  4. Eurasia gave us more Asian and European animals.
  5. We got the peccary for the free animal
So we got two South American animals last year, but all the other packs gave some real proper “redos” for the other continents. Asia got some new tropical animals, on top of Eurasia giving it some colder weather animals. Likewise Europe benefited very well from the Eurasia pack. Australia and New Zealand Africa strongly benefited from Arid, as well as the tropical pack giving us a tropical pig species and madagascars only “not lemur”.

So the Americas were pretty much avoided, and outside of North America and South America getting some dedicated packs earlier, the Americas never got a redo.

So we move on to 2024.

2024 packs:
  1. The Barnyard pack gave South America and alpaca, which it didn’t need that much if I’m being honest. This pack could have strongly used a Muscovy duck. Otherwise almost all of the breed are European with the exception of the donkey.
  2. The Zookeeper pack gave us one South American animal in the spectacled bear. Still, every other animal in the pack was African or Asian. That’s it.
  3. Likewise the anniversary animal … was another African cat.
It’s just so weird, yeah South America benefited from some mixed continent packs. But it just never got that proper redo that almost every other pack got.

Not saying the animals aren't good but really there was no need for the Sifaka.
I'm torn, because while I acknowledge the Sifaka was not a priority, after playing with it the animations and movement make it a contender for the best animal in the game. It's definitely in my top 3 now.

Arid had the problem of being hyperfocus on one general area of the world.
I think by this point most major deserts except MENA deserts were covered by other packs, so the hyperfocus made sense. Also I am like 99% sure the spurred tortoise and baboon were supposed to go in that pack but were not ready in time.

The sifaka being the only high effort animal honestly makes it a bit more upsetting, I would have massively preferred a basic bird clone like the rhea or grey crowned crane, or a more middling effort animal, the squirrel monkey, coati, mara

North America did get 3 packs focusing on it previously, and drops in other packs. It was actually the first continent to get a major revisit. It still is the third best represented continent in the game, even if it wasn't touched much in the last 2 years.

  1. Arctic - 4/4 north american animals
  2. North america - 7/7
  3. Twilight - 3/4
And after twilight North America got the armadillo and peccary thus completing its desert regions, the wolverine in eurasia and the american donkey in barnyard.

Like looking back at it asia really benefited from last years packs:
-full scenery set
-couple tropical animals
-a bunch of cold climate animals
-even some bones with the dromedary and sand cat

Thats just a really nice package

Yeah that is true, when I’m currently thinking North America need a revisit I’m either thinking:

A. Birds, the whole continent doesn’t even have one
B. Tropical North America, basically Latin America

I don’t need any mammals for temperate/ taiga North America, still need a bird though.

One of my biggest issues with the North American pack is that it didn't have proper Central American representative, imagine if we got something like the white nosed coati or a spider monkey

Also a scenery set.
If support was to go on i think eventually doing a mix of native american/log cabin and camping in a temperate pack would be cool, take bear and porcupine and get some animals from the rest of the world like a muntjac, mandarin and tuatara for example. Basicly what tropical did

Black Bear, Elk, Walrus, Gray Fox, WTD, Musk Ox, 2 otter etc...
I mean I would love those guys don’t get me wrong, but my priorities are either a bird or tropical animals for North America.

i would love some good cabin building sets. I had an idea for a pack like this for awhile. I don’t remember which thread it was under, but it was a forest pack.

I agree with @yoav_r on the sifaka. I thought it had the potential to be either one of the worst animals in the game or one of the best based on the looks and animations. But definitely one of my top 10 animals in game as frontier did a great job. Don’t get me wrong I desperately wanted a howler monkey to close out the game but I’ll take the sifaka. Speaking of closing the game in general kinda weird to mention 200 animals in the past and close at 195. Makes me wonder would a basic scenery pack with the usual 5 animals be out of question? Oh well on a closing note frontier did a pretty great job overall. Definitely my favorite game I’ll never fully understand why frontier excluded at least a couple flying birds in a WE setting. A sequel was going to sell regardless as I feel there will be plenty of improvements to make people want this game. Besides a few misses like the rhea, Secretary bird, tree kangaroo, etc. overall a fantastic game.

Of all continents i want to be done with asia and europe. Africa i could possibly use another bird, monkey, and crocodile. The new world should be priortized if we do possibly have another pack. Tree Roo, Echidna, ABB, NA bird, NA ungulate, walrus and most importantly Sa animals.
