Discussion ICARUS Terminal (Pre-Release)

This is going to sound a bit lame, but I can't find a real breakdown/comparison. What's the difference between this, and like, EDCopilot, and Touch Portal? Does this work alright on a tablet?

I'm on that same journey of discovery. As far as I see right now Icarus Terminal and EDCopilot are both great and displaying information from the game in a helpful way, but it's display only. Through Touch Portal there's the opportunity to be able to effect the game with controls passing simulated key strokes to the game.
I've tried ICARUS and found it really easy to setup and it looked great connecting from my iPad. I've started looking at Touch Portal to see how that works (with a downloaded plugin from https://www.christophecvb.com/touch-portal/plugins/elite-dangerous/ ) and I'll see which works best for me. Maybe I'll run with both!

EDCopilot can definitely be used to control the ship as well. I was using SpaceDesk to turn my iPad into a monitor, which let me use EDCP as a touch control for the ship. Even without the ipad to use a touch screen, you can load it on a second monitor and control it with your mouse. It also integrates with VoiceAttack and HCS voice packs to use voice commands. I personally prefer CoPilot just because of all of the other information it can give you. Being able to search for outfitters with specific things, material traders, etc and plot course to it with a few clicks/touches/voice commands is really handy. Though I have never tried Touch Portal. I will say that Icarus definitely looks a lot better, visually.

OK, then. I need to play with another tool. I looked at Touch Portal and had too many connectivity issues. I started looking at GameTouch Controller but it would mean starting with controls from scratch. So many tools, so little time.

Personally I think aesthetically ICARUS Terminal looks amazing and fits in with the general look and feel of ED's UI. That and the fact that I can run ICARUS on Linux. The other two..... either not at all or not without a lot of work.

Agreed. ICARUS Terminal looks amazing and works very well. It all comes down to your style of play and ability to remember what keys you set in your bindings :)

Hi, I'm having issues getting this to install/run. Is this the appropriate place to reach out for help?
Hi there! Sure.

It's a fairly simple installer and doesn't have any external dependencies beyond an up-to-date copy of Windows.

Most issues folks run into are down to anti-virus or firewall software misbehaving.

Thanks, I agree the installer is fairly straight forward but after I run it and it shows successful I cannot get it to run. I'm assuming it's on my side I'm just not sure where to start looking. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Ugh sorry I just typed up a long detailed message but the forum just ate it. I will try again tomorrow.

TL;DR trying to run either the Terminal or the Service apps from "C:\Program Files (x86)\ICARUS Terminal" from a command line would be interesting to see the result of and may display an error.

No worries! I was away for a few days but tried an uninstall/reinstall again and it worked! Not sure what it was, but it runs great. Thank you for this awesome program, I have so many ideas on how I'm going to incorporate it into my rig!

This would a great tool if we could see what types of ring mats are in a system.. Meaning if there are Void Opals and platinum etc..

I've been running Icarus Terminal on my second screen an 11" touchscreen and I love it.
But I have scanned this whole thread for maybe an answer to a simple issue I have.

If I touch the second screen while the game is running it takes focus from the game and I have to move the mouse onto the main screen and click it to give focus back to Elite.
Like I said no a huge issue but I wondered if anyone had any sort of fix to be able to use Icarus and then go right back into the game without having to find a mouse pointer which always seems to hide itself away. :)

Sorry if this has already been hashed out but I got a bit wordblind going through 20 pages.....

Best solution (IMO) is to use a second device. I have a similar setup to yours and quickly hit the same problem. My solution was to repurpose one of my old PCs to the touchscreen monitor and use a KBM switch to flip the mouse and keyboard between the two when needed. As far as I know there's really no way around it when you're using a single device because Windows isn't designed in such a way and is simply switching focus between apps/windows.

If you're on Linux and using KDE desktop (sorry I don't know about other DEs and Windows), you can set a Window Rule (or 2 or 3) for things like always on top, focus stealing prevention and focus protection. Again, I don't know if this applies to you as I don't know what OS or DE you're using, but in case this is helpful to you or other KDE users I'll post it anyway :)

I have decided to try to use my android phone connected to my 11" touchscreen for Icarus Terminal but for the life of me I can't figure out how to get it on my S23. Anyone able to enlighten an old man on how I can do this? I presume it is possible as the GitHub page says it runs on android phones.

Assuming Windows, ED Runner might help. Amongst other features, you can set a device such as a HOTAS for it to monitor where it will then give focus back to the game window when it's used/moved. I use this myself for a similar reason; interacting with a website or other tool on a different monitor (in VR overlay) I can get control of the game again by simply moving an axis on my joystick.

This is an absolutely fantastic application! I can't believe it took me this long to find it, an app like this should be advertised on the main Frontier ED website as a link under 'must have' applications or something. I'm using it on a second smaller monitor, a 21" touch screen directly beside my 4K main display with no issues. You've done a brilliant job with this application and how the information displayed keeps with the cockpit theme of ED; thank you so much for creating it as it's indispensable! (y):)
