Mandalay search-lights begone PeTiTiOn

The Python has some side lighting, but that's nice and diffuse so completely acceptable. I don't mind that.

Those spots on the Mandalay though, as they are...nope.

The ones on the Python are very weak and are more like cosmetic emissive lights. I'm totally okay with those.

And this could be such a great shot...

The fact that the Mandalay's downlights aren't linked to the light switch is disappointing. I hope that gets fixed before it becomes available for credits.

This has always been a bit anoying (You ride an SRV, you turn on lights and boom, you can't see anything. Turning lights off and oh wow, this body does have a cool lighting, it's just less brigh as your SRV beams....).
It's also slightly annoying that whenever you deploy your SRV, it always automatically puts the lights on, even when you have plenty of light available. But maybe it's the local laws, you need to have your daytime running lights on.

Yeah. Especially because the light actually makes you see worse at daytime because the game assumes, that when you're in a lit area, everything outside appears darker, which works in a dark area, but not so much when it's daytime an you just have your headlights on...
I mean, this is about those search lights, but I really wish they would overhaul the complete lighting system plus shadows and everything.

This, this! I could have sworn that it wasn't always like this, and that the default state was to have the headlights switched off. It would be nice if we could choose for ourselves whether the lights are on or off by default. Or at least have the SRV itself remember and keep its lights on or off from when it was last deployed.

I like the lights but yea, would be nice if they flipped off when I turn off the normal lights.
This creates an additional problem of forcing on floodlights when we just need headlights. Like say when bounty hunting in a dark RES, why would we have our ground lights on? Either the lights need a separate toggle or should remain as-is.

I say additional because the ship has a hole in it:

Why use lights at all in a dark RES? Night vision is superior and comes free with every ship.
You get tired of staring at bright green all the time. Elite is a nice looking game and you want to see it. Personally if I can get away with just headlights to avoid hitting asteroids then I will.

The problem the OP stated is ground lights are coming on when he doesn't want them on. Attaching them to headlights is just moving his problem elsewhere.

Whenever you use your headlights for whatever reason, the ground lights will also come on? The ground lights are supposed to be for when you are landed. It doesn't make sense they would come on at any other time.

It doesn't seem like such a big issue to me. When you're in a RES, there's no ground for the lights to reflect off of. Tying the ground lights to the headlight controls would grant more control over them than currently, without needing to add a whole new key binding. It's not a perfect solution but it would be relatively easy to implement and would definitely be an improvement.

- Not problem at all. If landing gear is not deployed and ship lights turn ON = search lights stay OFF. If landing gear is deployed = search light are ON when main ship headlights turn ON.

I quite like them though they are over sharp. I feel like I'm being alien abducted every time I stand under them. A option switch for landing lights would be good.

I don't know how you play, but when I'm in a RES I barely ever look at my ship from the outside. I'm too busy making pirates explode.
When I'm parked on a planet I'm busy hunting for bios, but OP still has a valid complaint about the lights.

It's not just about appearance though, it's about having things working properly or logically. I think we've become conditioned as Elite players to expect them not to, and sometimes even defend it.

This is an ideal world solution, but we are talking about FD here. I do admire your optimism though.
