Try hauling rares from a station in a system with an enemy stronghold, i get attacked going in the station and coming out.
O7
You know, last night was the first time I’d ever been attacked in such a scenario. And it wasn’t an NPC, it was a station camper. I had a brief 15 minute window last night between dinner and needing to leave… just enough time to make a rares run.
Entering the station was simple enough, their one shot barely scratched my shields.
Now, the smart play would’ve been to simply buy my rares and log out, and complete the run in the morning. Not very fun for either one of us, nor very sportsmanlike IMO, but safe.
The “ain’t no such rule” move would’ve been to log out, and then log back into Open, hoping for a new instance. I’d passed three other players on my way in, and there had been two others there already. That’s fairly good odds for a new instance IME. But I despise such types of login shenanigans.
Didn’t even consider switching modes.
So I made a break for it, as quickly as possible. I was tempted to wait for one of the slow pokes to arrive and distract them, but I’d feel better if I was the sacrificial lamb in that scenario. Best case scenario, I’d escape. Worst case scenario, I’d keep trying until I had to log out, and get some badly needed practice in what is, in my experience, a fairly rare scenario.
I made several mistakes that resulted in my death. First was that I didn’t take the time to properly plan my escape. I held the initiative, so it wasn’t like I was in that much of a hurry. Second is that I didn’t target the camper, so I’d have some more information about them. I might’ve made better choices if I had. Third is that I thought full pips to shields was a
good idea. I lost the ability to boost at a critical moment, which resulted in several solid hits. Final mistake was so busy practicing my evasion, of forgot I needed to align with my jump out.
Anyways, I was eager to make another go of it after respawning, having realized the some of those mistakes already. So I immediately went to my contacts tab, and discovered that it was slowly being repopulated as NPCs spawned in.
I was in a new instance.
I couldn’t buy rares yet, so I logged out.
This is the reason why I don’t want either Open Only or weighted Open. Because a player like
me is much more fun for the
camper than the types of shenanigans players who are currently in Solo/PG would pull to maintain the “advantage.” Based on a message I saw when I arrived, they were
expecting players to log out if they safely docked. That’s got to be frustrating for the camper.
And to be quite blunt, that kind of scenario would be annoyingly common if players lost the ability to freely choose their mode. Furthermore, it isn't likely to be PowerPlay related, but the usual suspects hoping for easy kills. Which would result in much fewer players participating in PowerPlay, which in turn would result in PowerPlay not getting updated in the future.
