Let's discuss RARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And how it unbalances Powerplay.

Thanks, that's useful! Just to be sure, the "Profit/t" column is truly a profit (sellprice - buyprice) or the price you sold the commodity for ("raw" sellprice)?
It's the profit as shown by the game on the sell screen, so after deducing the buy price. Both the profit and profit/t columns are.

Thanks for the clarification. How it looks from the early test, the price/distance function didn't change, the set max. profit per commodity however did (may be different for different rare commodities) and I can only hope it's fixed and not dynamically changing by other conditions. ;)

So, I made it to the second week of the new Power Play 2.0, and I’ve got to be honest; it's not what I was hoping for. I’ll try to explain my experience without sugarcoating it, and I know some of you might have strong opinions in response. But hey, that’s what feedback is for, right?

I jumped into the second week with enthusiasm, ready to tackle the new goals. I started with what I thought would be the hardest task first because that’s just how I roll; I like to get the tough stuff out of the way. The mission? Destabilize a power’s hold by racking up bounties. Sounds straightforward, right? Trust me, it was anything but.

It took me two days just to complete that single goal. As soon as my notoriety hit 10, everything spiraled into chaos. I was confined to a system with only one station and one beacon. Every time I took down an enemy, the police swarmed me, and my shield generator would get shredded. I tried using my AFMU to repair, but the constant onslaught forced me back to my carrier repeatedly. And here's the kicker: My own carrier would turn on me if I defended myself, resulting in a quick trip to the prison ship.

I tried the workaround of staying on my carrier to reduce my notoriety and even paid off my fines at an Interstellar Factor, but it didn’t take long for my notoriety to skyrocket again. I found myself stuck in a repetitive loop of chaos just to finish one of the five assignments for the week. And honestly, it was draining.

I want to be clear; I’ve been playing Elite Dangerous since 2014, so I’m no stranger to grinding. But this new Power Play just feels like an endless grind with minimal payoff. I know the tasks change each week, but the difficulty spike and sheer time commitment required for some of these assignments are too much for someone who has a full-time job in real life. The fact that my own carrier can destroy my ship when I’m just trying to defend myself? That’s where I draw the line.

Now, I fully expect some of you to tell me “good riddance” or dismiss my critique outright. But if you’re going to be rude, I wish you luck and hope you enjoy the endless cycle of forum complaints. Because let’s be real, the forums are filled with players voicing issues that rarely get addressed. I was genuinely open-minded about Power Play 2.0, hopeful it would bring fresh, meaningful content. Instead, it feels like they just added another grind mechanic without really listening to what the community has been asking for.

I’m bowing out of Power Play for now. If it’s working for you, that’s great. But for me, this update missed the mark. I’m all for challenging gameplay, but when it’s more frustrating than fun, it’s time to move on.

Good luck to everyone sticking with it. I’ll be focusing on other aspects of the game—or maybe other games entirely. Thanks for hearing me out.
Any of the tasks that require you to commit crimes - explicitly or implicitly - against local factions in a system controlled by another power, in order to undermine it, are WAY more trouble than they are worth. You will get bounties, you will get notoriety, and you will hammer your reputation with that local faction (which may matter if your power ever takes that system).

Unless given explicit instructions otherwise, I've found the quickest way to "do crimes" for a task is to muck around in Odyssey settlements - download PP data, upload malware (obtained from your Stronghold carriers), and murder everyone at the settlement. In fairness, I was just trying to do the first and all the murder happened when trying to avoid the people and then having to take them out.

I brought this up in a C&P post - how does it make sense that I get a 1000 credit bounty for killing someone in a settlement, but if I try to be good (i.e. hiding from them) and they spot me, now I get a fine for trespassing (restricted area), fine for downloading data (or uploading malware), and then the bounty for killing them. Yes, it makes sense from a "how things should happen" point of view, but I'm talking about incentives for not being a murder hobo. You're better off (unless your excellent at stealth and want to take that extra time) quickly finding the alarms (killing anyone nearby), scan the necessary credentials, shut down the alarm and then murder anyone near the dataports you want to access. Ugh... I hate they didn't give us ANY ability to knock people out and avoid this junk.

Anyway, back to your issue - yeah, it stinks. I got up to Notoriety 6 by the time I finished. This caused me problems when I went back to trading rares because one little "accident" at those ports (which incurs a fine) and now I'm locked out from trading with that port until I can pay the fine. And I can't pay that fine until the notoriety fades.

So I'm just back to trading rares (just using a Type 8, I'm not doing massive fleet carrier dumps) and am currently around rank 67. Once I reach 100, I'm not sure what I'll do. It is fun to fortify systems. It's also fun to do minor mischief (e.g. hacking adverts (though this harms rep with controlling faction)), but meh. I'll probably go back to exploring since I'll have the 100% bonus on exploration data at that point and I'm itching to go into the black with my Mandalay.

You mean player should stop finding the meta and just play a game?
You know, there doesn't have to be one meta. They could've made two, three, or more equally lucrative paths. I mean, why is the reward from hauling the actually PP materials so incredibly low! And if you go assault enemy PP ships - e.g. interdicting them in your territories in order to defend - you should be making easily as much merits as hauling rares.

That said, I do like that hauling rares (barring the fleet carrier stock up method) has a point again. It used to be just a thing for entry level traders back in the day.

you did close the distance to the center of the zone, right?
sometimes ive found an seemingly empty instance that populated when i got closer to the poi.
i tried, and i am yet to find an empty power cz.
is it occuring consistently? in the same cz? multiple czs? same system?
You weren't asking me , but i'm going to answer you anyway with why i replied to the dude you quoted --> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/power-conflict-zones-are-too-easy.629800/#post-10479282

So yeah , i've tried "closing the distance" as you mentioned ^ but it hasn't worked ( yet ) . Strangely enough, and perplexingly juxtaposed to your & Factabulous' experiences, i & a few other buddies in-game i've spoke with about this have yet to find a FULL power cz. :(
It appears you now get zero merits for selling any rares.
Thanks didnt know that
i linked it within my other post on page 5 ( before u guys posted ) but here's the actual info link again in case you're interested---> https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/elite-dangerous-powerplay-2-0-update.630423/

weird. though what do you mean by full cz? like none of them populated for you? or do you mean intensinty? because so far ive seen only medium cz, which is perfectly normal i guess ^^
anyway do you have any systems and bodies? i can check if its universal if it happens consistently...

i mean totally empty , every single time we tried 'Power Conflict Zones' .

Didn't matter which mode we played in either. ( open, solo, PG ) -- And we tried for over 2 hours , all the tricks & work-a-rounds. Nothing helped. /shrug

It's been a couple days , so i'd have to go back and doublecheck which system it was. ( might've been the 'Maray' system, iirc ? ...not 100% certain though sorry )

i'll also try going back to some other Power Conflict Zones ( in other systems ) later tonite and see what happens and report back in this thread.

Might've just been one of those bad luck bad RNG server de-syncs the other day i dunno. Or perhaps it's even somehow related ( code wise ) to our faction and to the system's status at that moment. ( re: Fortified, Reinforcement, Exploited, etc. )

Went straight to the center on every zone, every zone was empty, all zones in the same system were the same.

after patch 1: all rares are for sale with a loss

yeah the original poster by exaggerating the rares "problem" got it nerfed to zero.

you can't just fly a carrier and fill up on rares lol. most ridiculous claim i've ever seen.
rares are sold like 72 at a time.

now the rest of us have to haul pamplets for 480 once per hour and try to find pirates to kill.
i've noticed some of the bounties are ridiculously low now (i got 2,900 credits and 0 merits for one of them recently)
some bounties are normal but some spike low. i guess that is some kind of nerf action as well

No, it was a problem when carriers were involved. The player that hit rank 118 in LYR the first week (and was #1 on the leaderboard) used his carrier to do nothing but haul rares. He said that earned him about 46000 merits per hour; by contrast, my hauling rares in my Type 8 only earned about 8-10k an hour. Then he moved on to SLF farming and now he's mining platinum. I've also switch to mining platinum and am jumping 4 ranks every 2 hours - so about 16k/hour.

But don't take my word for it; here is his latest video (link goes to timestamp with his summation) on mining and compares it to the previous two methods:

so a guy stockpiles rares on a carrier for the last year or whatever. gets rank 100 instantly.
now the rest of us can't transport 48 of a rare to get any merits at all.

some of us are not interested in core mining. but i guess we have to now.

He didn't stockpile them for a year. He spent that whole first week (he was off work) fully loading his carrier, jumping it, unloading it; repeating that cycle over and over and getting 46000 merits per hour.

I'm against the carriers being used for rares because it defeats the whole spirit of how rares are sold - in limited quantities that you must unload before you can get more. Further, with everyone trying to use their carriers for this, carriers were jumping like crazy, clogging up rare systems (not that big of a deal unless you needed to get your carrier there for something else), AND therefore causing everyone's carrier jump time to be 1 hour or more per jump. Just no.

The merit value of the rares - fine. But stamp them as invalid for merits if loaded on a carrier (in the same way sales to a carrier don't count for trade ranks). Otherwise, they are going to just nerf rares completely, and how does that help anyone.

Anyway, I'm currently doing the mining thing to get to rank 100 and be done with it (currently rank 97). I'm sure it will be the next to be nerfed... unless the realize it doesn't affect PP that much since it can only reinforce systems your power already owns and the mined ore has to be sold in the same system it's mined in.
