Alec's Elite: Dangerous Advent Calendar (3310)

Following on from one I did a few years ago I've decided to do another advent calendar style countdown to christmas, posting one video a day from my Elite Dangerous YouTube back catalogue.

DAY 01 - Boarding a Farragut class capital ship (in an SRV)

December 2022 and the Thargoid war is already raging. I decide to visit a planetary base that's come under attack and am amazed to find that a Farragut capital class ship has parked itself in the air above the base. Hmmm, I wonder if I could somehow get an SRV onto that thing?

Source: https://youtu.be/BLDFPs9Q0g8

Two subsequent regrets:

One - that I missed a golden opportunity to get out, stand on the edge of the capital ship and gaze down at the ground below like a god!

Two - that I never subsequently found a similar opportunity with an Imperial capital ship.

The capital ship doesn't have collision with on foot cmdrs and iirc there's weirdness where if you get out of the SRV while there's a ship directly underneath it will spawn you on the ground. You can get out and jetpack up and stand on your SRV though.

Two that I never subsequently found a similar opportunity with an Imperial capital ship.
Opposite of that for me, we did one with an imperial ship at Ghost Giraffe

The spinny ring was really trippy.

If the Sol thing escalates I hope we get a chance to try it with a Fed cap ship too since there should be plenty more around in fed space.

Really impressive getting up there like that though, compared to how much of a slow effort it was for us.

madman :)

DAY 02 - Towering Inferno 2: Hotter, Higher, Harder!

A bit later the same month and the attacked planetary settlements give me another idea. I'd already posted previous videos demonstrating tower climbing in the SRV (using inverted boost to press the SRV's wheel against a wall and literally drive up it) and even one climbing a smaller burning tower but I finally had an opportunity to climb a really tall burning tower and took it.

DAY 03 - Searching for geysers on an alien world

It's the end of January 3309 and I've moved away from the Thargoid war to more relaxing activities out in the black including planetary exploration with some exobiology thrown in to help with the bank balance. One thing I've really taken to is scouting for plants in the ship by flying with Flight Assist turned off. On a low-ish gravity world this can be an incredibly chilled experience. Start moving (slowly) and then you just have to tap the vertical thrusters occasionally to keep some altitude but otherwise just let the ship drift over the landscape using a bit of roll, pitch and yaw to aim where you fancy. One thing you'll notice doing this at low speeds is the sound of the wind whistling past your windows occasionally ("wind?" I hear you say ... yes, well, let's just let that go shall we!) which is yet another example of this game's fantastic sound design.

In this particular example it wasn't plants but geysers that I was looking out for but the principle remains the same.

Or as we say in Germany - Advent, Advent, ein Lichtlein brennt1. Depending on your background, intentions and occasion, "Lichtlein" (small light) was sometimes replaced with other words.

1The translation neither scans nor rhymes: Advent, advent, a small light is burning.

DAY 04 - SRV exploration: risking it all for the rings

As mentioned yesterday, I'd been out on an exploration/exobiology trip and was making my back towards the bubble when an Elite Observatory filter for bodies orbiting close to a ring alerted me to this place (Drojau CS-X b32-0 4 a). So here was my dilemma. On the one hand I was carrying a huge amount of incredibly valuable exobiology data that had taken me weeks to gather and which would all be lost if I blew up. But on the other hand ... that incredible landscape was just perfect for some playtime in the SRV.

So yeah ... of course I did!

What I particularly love about this is the constant feeling that if I could just catch a really decent bounce off one of the hills in the distance I ought to be able to leap clean across to those perpetually elusive rings.

DAY 05 - Caustic Science

It's March 3309 and the community have been exploring the Thargoid maelstrom clouds looking for things like Caustic Generator tissue samples in order to unlock the Caustic Sink module (remember back when you had to unlock those before being able to buy them?). Anyway, I decided to do something slightly different with them and set about making a couple of humorous videos about my attempts to deliver one of these to a scientist so they could study them. Those who want the full story can find part one linked in the video description but I recommend skipping the first 11 minutes inside the maelstrom cloud if you just want to get to the payoff. Here I'm featuring part two which I think was slightly more entertaining.

DAY 06 - Mysterious shipping containers are FOR ALL POI

On the 1st April 3309 I post on the forum about an extraordinary discovery I've made, shipping containers on the fringes of Guardian space full of both Guardian and Thargoid artefacts.

Later the same day I post video evidence that these containers aren't just here but are FOR ALL POI! (*1)

DAY 07 - Coriolis Trench Surfing

In June 2023 the Buckyball Racing Club ran "Tunnel-ish Vision" a race which required competitors to not only race their ships through a selection of installation tunnels but to also carry out some bonus stunts including a "trench run" (traditionally a Flight Assist Off training exercise where you fly down the trenches that run along the edges of a Coriolis station). This was me practicing for that and getting into a bit of a rythmn. Also interesting to note how much harder it is to do when you're chasing a trench as opposed to when it's coming towards you.

DAY 08 - ASMR : Coasting the interplanetary divide of two gently merging worlds.

Planetary collisions are an extraordinary thing to witness and Canonn Science do have a calendar where you can keep track of upcoming collisions in the future. In this video I went out to witness the collision of moons 2a and 2b in the Synuefai ZL-O b51-0 system. Incidentally, this also demonstrates the wind sound effect that can be heard when drifting over a planet with flight assist turned off that I mentioned previously.

DAY 09 - The extreme SLF docking challenge (aka "No Time For Caution")

OK, full disclosure - I am not the first person to do this. Annoyingly I can't now find the video where I first saw it done, it was years ago pre-Odyssey. Anyway, inspired (and soundtracked) by the legendary docking sequence in Chris Nolan's Interstellar this is a demonstration of how to recreate that scene in Elite Dangerous by deploying your ship launched fighter from a powered down mothership that's tumbling back towards the planet, trying to dock with it again, ideally (tho' not necessarily) before it hits the ground.

If you enjoy this then I'd also recommend giving my other video a watch where I do the same thing (without commentary) in a Federal Corvette.

DAY 10 - The "Double Trouble" Buckyball Race - Max Bonus Run

Given that the last Buckyball Race of the year is on right now it seems appropriate that behind today's calendar door is a demonstration video I made for one of last year's races, "Double Trouble" (hosted by Cmdr Raiko).

For those that don't know, Buckyball Races are week long time trial events which you can enter any time you fancy during that week and, perhaps more importantly, as often as you like (which means you have plenty of opportunity to learn from your mistakes and from the shared wisdom of others), striving to improve your piloting skills and, hopefully, your ranking on a leaderboard which is maintained by the race organiser. Racers submit their runs to the organiser in the form of a series of screen shots (or a video of the run) who will then verify your time, calculate any bonuses and update the leaderboard accordingly. For more information come and join us in the Buckyball Racing Club discord server.

DAY 11 - Full demonstration of EDCoPilot's incredible new "time trial" feature.

It's September 3309 and my new favourite add on for Elite Dangerous is Cmdr Razzafrag's fantastic EDCoPilot virtual cockpit assistant. Among its vast array of features is something new, fully automated time trials. These not only provide voice and on-screen guidance (including automated route plotting) to the start line but also then guide and time your run through a series of hand positioned waypoints, recording your finish time on a global leaderboard. In this video I set out to demonstrate the feature using an SRV course I created myself at the Trader's Rest engineer base in the Laksak system.

Source: https://youtu.be/pRCf9o4qGUQ?list=PLSeEFsl5MwqTePA7X6dVg-vluHVXRBj6P

External to EDCoPilot, there's also a website created by Stardust Brothers where you can view the maps and leaderboards for all the existing time trial courses.

For example, the Trader's Rest circuit featured in the video looks like this:

From now on whenever people try to tell me the scarab has bad handling and can't be controlled, I'll show them this video!
I love the scarab. Perfect climber, perfect flyer, handles great. Just needs some practice.

DAY 13 - The absolutely insane Thargoid Spire Platform Challenge

When the Thargoid Barnacle Matrix sites first appeared at the start of August 3309, despite the earth tremors around the Toughened Spear Root structures, I don't think anyone had the slightest clue that they would erupt from the ground like Jack's legendary beanstalk, and grow into the colossal 6km high Spires that we see today. Another surprise was the huge petals which it turned out we could land our ships on. I don't know how long it was before a thought occurred to me ... would it be possible to jump an SRV from one platform across to another? This video answers that question.

Source: https://youtu.be/2QWg_-X039E?list=PLSeEFsl5MwqTePA7X6dVg-vluHVXRBj6P

Note: subsequently this challenge has now been made into two permanent EDCoPilot time trials, one at the Leigong Spire on Ceti Sector BQ-Y B4 8 b and one at the Raijin Spire on Pegasi Sector IH-U B3-4 AB 1 e. Although these spires are no longer "active", they still exist as (hopefully permanent) locations in the game where people can still go and attempt this challenge for themselves.
