PvP Bounty System

Dear FDEV

I know that players in PVP do Incur Bounties. However. It would be great if a PVP CMDR could log a Bounty on a Ganker at a starport. Just like the Bounty contracts found at stations.

Only Players in open PVP would be given the option when they respawn to load a bounty on the offending player that Ganked them if it led to their demise.

Simply put, on respawning at their last logged location, the respawning commander will be presented with two options. The option to rebuy their ship and an additional option to load a bounty on the offending CMDR.

The respawning commander can either decline or accept the load bounty option. If the respawning commander accepts the option to place a bounty on the offending CMDR, the interface will then give them an option to select how much the bounty must be subject to their available credit balance. (The Bounty Credit amount will become reserved once the contract is in force until either the amount is claimed by a commander who completes the bounty contract or the contract expires at which point the Bounty credit balance will become unreserved and once again forms part of the respawning commanders total available credit balance.) The interface can also give a time limit for the bounty to be claimed similar to the time limits placed on Bounties contracts in game. This would ensure that the offending commander will be able to be absolved of his crime if the contract terminates before completion or the contract is completed by another commander before the contract deadline.

However, unlike in PVE where contracts can only be accepted by one player, the contract should be open to as many Commanders as want to accept it. This means that the first commander to find and terminate the Hunted Commander claims the bounty immediately resulting in his credit balance automatically updating with the amount of the bounty.
Simultaneously all other commanders who accepted the contract will be notified that the Bounty has been completed which will remove it from their Transactions cue.

Some additional things to consider is that commanders who accept the contract would need to be provided with details as to where the offending commander could be found similar to how location details are currently provided. This would ensure that offending commanders may or may not know if there was a bounty placed on them for Killing another commander and result in great gameplay opportunities in the PVP community.

How do you stop people who lost a fair fight putting a bounty on the winner, and other forms of abuse?

I can see it being used by the gank inclined, provoke the fight and then lose so the innocent victor can be made the prey of the hunters for example.

If I understand it correctly, you would be willing to give a handsome amount of credits to anyone who manages to shoot down a CMDR who killed you?
I totally love this idea, it would result in a great gameplay opportunity indeed.

It would work the following way:

CMDR Evil Ganker kills CMDR Innocent Victim.
CMDR Innocent Victim pays off his rebuy, then he puts a hefty bounty on CMDR Evil Ganker's head.
CMDR Evil Ganker asks his friend CMDR Best Buddy "hey bro, do you want some easy money?"
CMDR Best Buddy shoots CMDR Evil Ganker down in a friendly duel, in accordance with their mutual agreement.
CMDR Innocent Victim pays CMDR Best Buddy a hefty sum of credits as a token of gratitude for his valiant deed.

CMDR Best Buddy ganks CMDR Innocent Victim.
CMDR Innocent Victim pays off the rebuy fee, then puts a bounty on CMDR Best Buddy's head.
CMDR Best Buddy asks CMDR Evil Ganker "hey, do you want some ez money?"
... you get the idea. :)

FYI, it's very easy to avoid getting killed in this game if you know what you are doing. CMDR Evil Ganker is most probably never gonna get shot down unless he deliberately stayed in an instance with the express purpose of fighting to death. Unironically, the exact same option is absolutely available to CMDR Innocent Victim as well, he just chose not to learn how to survive, for some inexplicable reason. :)

Yeah, its an idea that has been suggested a few times, but there's no way around the fact that it'll just end up being a credit transfer mechanic between alt accounts or friends.

If you don't want to be interrupted by being sent to a rebuy screen and especially if your ship has less than 1000 mj of shield and the same number in hull, busy areas in open are probably going to be a bad time.

Good point. Maybe allow CMDRs to only be offered the option to apply a bounty to cmdr who initiated a Kill/ Gank on them if they were clean.

I hear you. Maybe have parameters set up that don't permit friends or squad mates to benefit. Just an idea. That's why it's posted here. Maybe someone has an idea how to fairly implement it

Since pretty much the everyone in the pvp community is already on the friend list of one another, making the friend list an exclusion criterion would pretty much exclude everyone who had the slightest chance to claim such a bounty to begin with.

People of course could just temporarily unfriend one another (or temporarlily leave the squadron) anytime.

The simple fact is that it's impossible to fairly implement such a system, sadly. There is a reason why the maximum amount of bounty you can claim by a pvp kill is capped at a ridiculously low value.

Is that a real thing? I thought it was an urban legend! I have a guy I'd love to turn to space dust!!
It is real, yes. However, you cannot realistically expect to be able to claim such a bounty unless the target is a noob or they are willing to fight to death.
If you really want to turn someone to space dust, fling down the gauntlet and win the duel. :)
