Is Cobra mk5 op?

yes of course but if small ships are gonna be bigger on the inside than mediums there should've at least been a galnet article celebrating faulcon de laceys discovery of clown car tech or something.
I do remember commanders could buy compression-mechanisms to update their cargo compartments in at least one of the old Elite Versions many years ago. :)
The point is, there were mechanics in game allowing to fit huge volumes into smaller ones in the past.

It would make sense lore-wise to communicate these narratives in game. As well it would open the possibility to upgrade cargo holds of old ships too :D

The Cobra Mk V isn't small; it's as wide a small pad and about 75% of the total length of a pad. The ship internal space would be more than a Mandalay (which is really all wing) by a decent margin.

None of the ships are small, next to a human. Even the ubiquitous Sidey has a surprising volume. I think people are letting assumptions get the better of actual physics (since I assume this is the crux of the argument). Box of the same dimensions as sidewinder: 14.9×21.3×5.4 = 17.4 meters³

Obviously sidey is a wedge, so perhaps closer to 14 meters cubed or some such. That's still a pretty large volume. For context, Cobra Mk V dimensions are considerably more at 41.2m x 55.1m x 9.47m and to compare, Mandalay is recorded as 49.6m x 74.4m x 14.9m (which is mostly wing).

Mk V is bigger than people realise.
I dont know the exact dimensions of a sidey... I know one easily could live in one. As well I assume the result of the product should be different: 14.9×21.3×5.4 = 2.288,898 meters³... epic.... I think it is about 1.713,798 meters³. 20 point sth times 5 point something is bigger than 100 square meters. 14.9 times >100 should have an outcome of >1490 qube meters - can anyone explain to me how the above numbers are calculated?

One assumption: Let be a human up to and around 200cm in elevation; then assume a human needs 100cm in width and depth. Said that, a human needs around 2m³ just to fit inside a cockpit. Lets assume furthermore the default pilot seat may contain the same volume than the human strapped to it. This would lead to about 4 m³

Do I miss something?

The C MkV is a wonderful explorer imho. Its cockpit view is best in game. My nebula jumping landed me in North America /Pelican Nebula where I ran up on a colorful FC. Its a beauty.
dropped in for a few minutes and took off again for the next spot in the sky.

It reminded me of a Chris Foss painting

My favorite space art is by John Berkey. Since I was a kid, I've admired his impressionistic space art.

It was a nice visit but now I'm off to another colorful place in space.
... a little fine art for the weekend
Have a nice day
THX a lot for these fine art space images :) <3

We Tried the Cobra Mk V somewhere in the Outer Scutum Centaurus Arm... amazing Pluto like world... this is the outcome:

I apologise good sir. I didn't mean to besmirch your chosen vessel of comfort. Looking at it objectively however, the AspS received a less than stellar welcome on release and from the ship stats (from a while ago granted) it was one of least flown vessels in the game which tells it's own story.

That being said, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the heart wants what the heart wants etc...

I myself love to fly the DBS though nobody else seems to, I also love to fly my Fed Dropship, again objectively not a great ship but for some reason I enjoy it.
I know commanders loving and flying the DBS - it is versatile in combat as well :)

Oi!! I absolutely love my Asp-S. Been all over the galaxy in it, Sag A, Colonia (both before FC's). My reason is not one of 'look at me' - I like small, simplistic ships (it makes the black feel blacker and more dangerous) and my main reason is that from the rear it looks like a DeTomaso Mangusta. It jumps 50-odd light years and I think it looks cool. It's all I want!!

Sorry will zippit again, now. Just love that little ship. Never occurs to me what others will think when they see me flying it.
I own an ASP Scout (at least) -- I mostly used or use my oldest ship in existence, which is an AspX, though. I agree to Templar.
As well the old ships have provenance the new ships need to proof what the old ships already achieved.

I don't think it's OP. It's an amazing ship and the handling is exquisite. So much fun to fly. Still, it has some limitations depending on your preferred play style. It cannot masslock anything other than the smalls and like all small ships the distro can just barely keep up. All the more so with 5 HPs. It really needs low draw weapons to shine.

That said, it makes for an awesome cold running hull tank that can simply disappear when you need to.

@cmdr Riverside: would you be willing to share your curves? I run dual VKB gladiators and I'm trying to get the nose of this thing under control so that I can put some rails on it. 😁

Right now I have the same profile on X (pitch) & Z (yaw):
33 55 77 99 118 142 143 138 128

On roll I have a less aggressive S:
35 50 66 81 95 108 119 127 130 128

These aren't final or even particularly refined & it's still not really enough dampening at the lower end of yaw but it's an improvement & still works with any other ship. Best advice I can give is to just muck about with the cubic (Bezier) curve tool. You can't do this in-game sadly because clicking 'Set' in vkbcfg briefly makes the controller disappear & reappear.

Good luck ;)

The DBS has only ever been versatile in combat as a shieldless little hulltank using low distro draw weapons like cannons. And it has a terrible flight model (very weak boost).
Another example of such a small shieldless hulltank was the Viper Mk4 (which at least has good lats/verts and strong boost, although it's slow as hell).

The Cobra Mk5 beats both of these ships by a country mile, in every possible way.

I will use this as a starting point. Many thanks Cmdr.

Cool ship, but I don't know if FDev didn't overdo it by making the agility and controllability of this ship arcade-level? Better agility by 20 points than Eagle.

Not that I'm nitpicking, but do we want new ships to go in the direction where they're super easy easy to control and literally have no flaws? Each of the previous ships had some quirks, smaller or bigger, and that made them interesting, leaving a lot of room for experimentation. This one had this, that one had that, etc.

And we get a ship that beats the Eagle and Vulture in agility, speed, etc. Boost acceleration beats other ships hands down, top speed with full armor and weapons - wow. And... those insane lateral thrusters.

I regret that a bit, because I like small ships and I had each one for special tasks, because each one is unique in something. And here I get a ship that's better at everything. I know I don't have to fly it, but... those previous ships look pale in comparison and in fact in your game you can limit yourself only to ships that came out this year, right?

Many new players will ask - what small ship would you recommend? Of course everyone will write that Cobra mk5. Because this ship simply beats everything in its category hands down. Previously there were different opinions. For example, take Vulture for combat, some recommended Cobra mk3 others Viper 4 or DBS. So, it's a bit of a shame that few people will recommend other flavors, when the meta ship is within reach, you can't blame them for that.

And what is your opinion, is Cobra mk5 too good for a small ship and don't you feel control of Cobra mk5 feels too arcade?

Turn flight assist off, it won't feel like an arcade then.

Are you guys familiar with how modern cars emit less, are more efficient, and offer better safety and capabilities over an 80 year old car? They even come in electric, now.

That is how it's supposed to work. In the same way we are fortunate to travel between countries in air conditioned, pressured aircraft, and not DC 9's that take an entire week hopping between small airfields.

If the existing ships need some work, then that's way more productive, brings the rest of the ships in better focus and is considerably more beneficial than pearl clutching at some new ships and deciding we really all ought to be riding pony and carriage again. Frontier have already hinted there might be some power (plant) related improvements.

Maybe give them a chance to move forward with the improvements? See how it shakes down.

A number of ships have been fringe use for about 7 years. All the new ships have done, is make that obvious.
The Type 8 has relegated my (regular) Python to mining. The T7 is truly dead. The T6 is a brief stepping stone, and occasional explorer.

The Cobra 3 is now a stepping stone, and collectable. The Cobra 4 can still fit everything into a proper slot, but is eclipsed in all other performance metrics.

And, these are good things. We needed new ships.

Don't beat around the bush, tell us what you really think.
← Just look left of these words.
What do you see? :)

It's the best ship in the game, plain and simple. Honestly.

I've posted on so many places here on the forum how and why Cobra V made almost all my fleet unattractive and obsolete, just wanted to joke a bit.
Here's something of what I wrote elsewhere:

I was willing to bet my house that Mandalay will be "the one", my daily driver and long range ride and all i ever need... and then I purchased Mk V.

The way that ship handles is pure joy.

No subtle corrections of over-pitch or over-yawn needed as in Mandalay, she's stable and firm and agile and cold and freakin fast and with one of the best views in the game, etc etc. The feel when you drive Mk V is the absolute top. Perfection. Sorry Mandy, you're now assigned to the really really long range operations on HIP 36601 and such. For all things bubble, it's Cobra V.

Fair enough - this I can relate to. At one point I was thinking of the Mandalay as the replacement for my long-cherished Cobra Mk III, then the Cobra Mk V was announced and I thought WOW and held off buying the Mandalay. Glad I did. "Daily driver" for me means "only ship". :)

(y)
Cobra Mk V can.

This is my Daily Driver. I don't fight in it, I simply beat every interdiction game and continue with my business.

I also have a Titan Bomber with ~3k hull, and a Titan Collector with 13°C.

While I was out on my trip earlier this week I met up with a good friend & fellow explorer (via telepresence multi-crew) and gave them a demonstration of the flight characteristics (mostly yaw turns) on a nearby airless world. They recorded some of it & put together a video:

I had a lot of unsold data on board so wasn't taking any risks and I'm not familiar enough with it yet to get super close to the terrain but we had a lot of fun :)

1: Every CMDR needs a Cobra.
2: MkV is (for now) the ULTIMATE Cobra.
3: 'nuff said.
I came into the Elite galaxy with ED. I have some time in the CIII and the CIV cockpit. I flew the CIII extensively before the Vulture was released. But I don't have the same nostalgia for the Cobra family of ships that is so common. Is that because I don't have the previous history in the older versions of Elite? Who knows? I do see one in my fleet, someday though.

So far, I have resisted the purchase.
