Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

so I think I might just get the AspX out of mothball and see if one of my other SCO drives fits, and see what I can find with mere 3309-like jump ranges. The galaxy is still there, unless I am very much mistaken, and I didn't have the engineered DSS last time I went into the black.
Luck is with me already... worked out where I was relative to Sol, looked in completely the opposite direction "outward", found the last system that had population and... yes it has a shipyard. Phew!

So I took the Python Mk II to the nearby CNB (fish in a barrel) to shoot some fish. I've been "dangerous" for years, but the bar was at 99.999..% so I assumed I needed to finish that and Bob would be my uncle, but nono... After dangerous comes "Deadly", so now I can eat through that.

Being basically a pacifist by nature, and slightly disappointed I went home to Jameson and looked in the hangar. Noticed "Henrietta", the old Phantom I hadn't flown for ages. She sort of reminds me of Han Solo's ship or the one from Serenity/Firefly, so I decided to jump in the driver seat, just to see how it looked (in VR). Rather well, but found her in a pretty poor condition, missing parts, and with a lousy 43 ly jump range. Fixed her up mechanically, kept the patina and decided to go and see the old Horse-head. This game! I never get tired of flying spaceships (in VR!) and in cases like this, I swear, my eyebrows feel burnt:

Greetings, commanders!

Tis I, Rustnsawdust, returning to the game for the first time in a couple... um, four years!! No idea why I left; no idea why I'm back. Both seemed like good ideas at the time.
Welcome back, commander. You left before I was even thinking about joining the ranks.
I think I know why you returned... You missed this thread too much. 😉
Which is quite understandable. In my opinion the best thread of the internet.
The bionic woman had the eye. The bloke had the eye.
They both had eyes. And ears. And mouths... erm, I think you get the idea.
But I think you initially meant to say that the Bionic Woman had the Bionic Ear, while the Bionic Bloke had the Bionic Eye. And some other bionic parts...
I swear, my eyebrows feel burnt:
Well, they kinda look the part, too. Still smoldering a little.🔥🧯

Rather embarrassed to say I got that wrong. The woman had a bionic ear.

Good News after reaching Deadly you have climbed halfway up the points ladder to Elite.

A cosy pic for a chilly day.

I had a quick pledge to Li Ying-Rui as he's offering 100% increase to explo pay-outs. Had a quick look at the weekly requirements and it looked like a lot to do which smacked as having to do a job.

So I un-pledged.

Maybe one day :D

So, now, I'm in my Cobra III, a.k.a. Barry the Baptist, sitting outside a station scanning wakes. Just fancied something different for a bit.

Interestingly, I didn't know these showed up as a contact:

Apparently they are now hackable via some sort of limpet as part of that work PowerPlay to either repair or hijack.

They say that after completing the first weeks work and getting yourself on the merits ladder the weekly tasks are optional.

You only have to do the weeklies once to unlock your ranking with the power you pledge to. I pledged to Grom and did most of the initial tasks incidentally as I played the game. YMMV, of course, but you only have to do that once.

Grom, at least, awards you merits for scanning ships in fortified and reinforcement systems. In other words, you get merits for doing that anyway.
Interestingly, I didn't know these showed up as a contact:
That was introduced with the Ascendancy update. You can hack them and get merits for your power. I understand that the station authority doesn't like it very much when you hack it, so be careful.

Most activities seem to give you some number of merits. You can't lose merits - there is no longer any rank decay - so you might as well pledge, do the first weekly, then forget about it. Provided you stay in the systems your power is present in, you will just rank up passively by playing the game. If you leave the region where your activities benefit your power, you lose nothing.

That happened to me too.
I am always afraid of selling the wrong stuff, (which i might need later on).
Yes, this is definitely a problem with how things are designed.

The only way I figured out how to deal with it was to actually investigate all the mats and data and figure out which to keep. Inara helps a lot with this, because it lists them all and their possible uses.

There is a lot of data and mats that are never used, and can always be sold. And as you've seen it's important to keep some empty space :)

I am currently using ED/Odyssey Materials Helper which helps keeping track of which materials i need to keep, still have to be careful.
I am now in the process of unlocking Odyssey engineers.

Hi :)
Yeah, that's one of the things that puts me off the PP feature, being tied into too much to do just for one thing, another reason is I like to swap stuff about game wise so the game doesn't get stale. (I'm maybe also starting to get a touch of the 'attention span deficit' as I get older too maybe!).
I'm hoping 'Colonisation' isn't going to be of quite the same type of calibre as PP and it's going to have plenty of fun stuff to do...if it's not, I'll be stuffed! :D

What am I doing presently?...🤔.
Did a shortish spell with deep core / laser mining yesterday and today 700-1000Ly's out from the bubble. Some of it to just top up some mats (metals) that I used for getting some of the newer modules and drives. I hopped briefly into those old Titan Systems and gathered some more Titan Drive mats and other related stuff, then went straight back out mining etc.
I might go further and do some deep space exploring next week too. Still haven't bought a Cobra Mk5 yet, I've just enough Arx to buy the standard version, but I don't really need one as such, especially if I'm out exploring soon. I bought the Mandalay & Type 8 but only the standard versions, I did get a nice paint job for the Mandalay but not for the Type 8. I've pretty much replaced my DBX with the Mandalay, by I've still got my 'explorer' DBX on my Carrier, and now and again use it. I haven't (apart from upgrading the modules) used my T8, tried it briefly for mining but preferred my Fed Corvette 'miner'.

Games.
I've recently bought MS Flight Simulator (A week or so ago) it's not the current 2024 version, but I bought the 2022 40th Anniversary edition. The only new game I've bought in the last 2 years I think, (might get one of the newer 'Sub' sims too next week as well, still haven't decided which one yet).
Slowly getting the hang of MSFS, but all the main settings I've set on 'easy' at the moment (What a wuss I am)...anyway, tis good!..so I've been playing that most of this afternoon, and downloading some of the free updates for it, mostly enhanced terrain stuff. Was quite surprised (and very pleased) to find out there's loads of stuff to / you can download, but in my enthusiasm I was quickly filling up the 'C' drive (1Tb SSD) without realising it (originally showing roughly 440Gb spare, now down to 270Gb )...which made me wonder whether I should fork out some credits and get a bigger one, possibly a 2TB M2. That of course will probably mean a complete re-instal of the OS. (which was originally a Win 10 installation then upgraded to the Microsoft free Win Update to 11)...Hmm... 🤔...maybe later on this year.

Provided you stay in the systems your power is present in, you will just rank up passively by playing the game. If you leave the region where your activities benefit your power, you lose nothing.
Hi :)

Well, that's something, that's one of the reasons why I think I've hardly touched the previous powerplay. I might just give it a try before we get the Colonisation feature.(y)

Anyway, I digress....It's bitingly cold here in the UK at the moment 🥶, we've had a very hard frost today, and it hasn't warmed up by any amount, if at all. I'm just looking out the window as I'm typing this and everything outside is coated in a thick film of frost. I had to de-ice my garden pond and get the waterfall & air pumps going this morning, it's thawed the water out a bit but I'm going to have to leave everything running overnight I think, don't want to lose my fishy friends.
Okay, stay warm (if you're in the UK).

Jack :)
