Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Okay, stay warm (if you're in the UK).
I'd like to stay warm, too.
It's just about 0°C right now, but it's a rather clear and very windy night, so it might get cold tonight.
I actually haven't bought a new game in years. I think I still have Quake 3 Arena on CD somewhere.
Elite was the first game I bought in a decade. I can't even remember which game I last bought as a physical copy...

And here I am with over 350 games just on Steam alone (and a bunch that aren't on steam). I have over 30 games that I've played 200 hours or more, and about 15 that I've played more than 400 hours. And a few over 1000 hours. But only Elite Dangerous is over 4000 hours.

I retired 8 years ago, and gaming is what I do. That and music. It's all I ever wanted. If I'm lucky I'll die while playing some game. Maybe I'll drop dead out in the black somewhere. That would be ok. :)

My purchased games history is something like:-
  • Odyssey (pre release)
  • Horizons (pc July 2016)
  • Elite Dangerous (Mac/pc May 2016)
  • Half Life 2 (?)

But hopefully not for a while, eh?

I managed to make it to Colonia and, after much embarrassment and a shameful lack of technique, got docked. I really need to run through the training stuff again!

After rummaging around the various station services, I had the distinct feeling that this wasn't Odyssey. After some research and background reading, sure enough - Odyssey hadn't installed correctly. Took most of the afternoon messing with Steam and Frontier store logins, reading several support files, and too much back-and-forth nonsense before I had everything set up right.

So the big question now is what to do in-game? I'm very interested in the new exobiology research and could probably do it in my trusty AspX. But I love the look of the new Cobra V and wouldn't be averse to dropping some cash on Frontier for the necessary Arx (since Odyssey was much cheaper than I was expecting to pay).

Decisions, decisions!

If doing Exobiology there is a lot to be said for a ship that can land in a really small space as some of the plants favour highly inaccessible locations, the AspX might be a little big for that, you would need the Artemis suit of course and some still use an SRV, the Scarab flies better than the Scorpion, the ship should be fitted with a Detailed Surface Scanner.

Understood. At least in part, that's why I'm interested in the Cobra V. Another consideration (for a new ship) is that I did all my engineering in the Bubble before I came out to Colonia so engineering new modules and equipment would be a bit of a chore out here.

I'm doing my homework on recommended builds; no need to rush.

You should pin you're blueprints, I'm in Colonia and Dorn is a handy dandy engineer to unlock, there's a megaship around here where you can acquire the needed escape pods.

I've got over 400 games on GOG, and over 100 on Steam, and some on Epic, (mostly the ones i got for free or very cheap).
And of course lots of games on cd from back in the day, i still have some old computers to play them on.
Only a few i got to play through. Elite is wat i play most.
I am less then 2 years from retirement.

Engineering out in Colonia should be better than in the Bubble provided you did enough back there to get access to the handful of ship engineers in Colonia who aren’t far apart have lots of blueprints each and can for some blueprints get to higher grades than available in the Bubble.

A couple of postcards from out here.

On this planet, even at "night", the whole sky is lit up by nebulae. Pretty:

Nearby I ran into this tiny black hole:

I'm starting to encounter undiscovered systems as I make my way out toward the core. I'm not going straight there, of course, but making a dogleg path to see a few spots I've previously visited.

The Cobra MKV is performing perfectly, and I'm really appreciating the speed and smoothness, the visibility in the cockpit, and the SCO for blasting off planets. :) Also, disembarking from the front is great for exobiology.

Got a couple First Footfalls and found 50 mil worth of bacteriums in my first foray. Plus got to see some beautiful sights (which is at least half the reason I explore).
