I don't like any of the on-foot cosmetics.

To be fair, I think that's what's meant by "there are no space cowbays IN ED".

There could be space cowboys in the ED universe, and there might even be some gameplay to be squeezed out of the premise if FDev chose to implement it, but FDev do have a habit of mentioning stuff and then not actually producing anything interactive related to it.

Personally, I just think it's a bit odd (not to mention contrived) the way everything seems to need to be compatible with the spacesuits.
My suspension-of-disbelief is willing to accept that somebody might choose to wear a cowboy-themed outfit while wandering around a space station or when flying their ship but it doesn't stretch far enough to allow me to accept that they buy an oversized hat especially to wear over a space-helmet.

Why not just sell casual outfits and spacesuits, with the game automatically selecting the most suitable one depending on the environment?
Twice (or more) the revenue for FDev and no more ridiculously contrived spacesuits.

Skyrim is getting on for 15 years old now and for over a decade there have been mod's that allow players to select outfits for home, villages, cities, exploration and combat and then player characters and followers wear the chosen outfits in the associated environment.
Obviously it's not a deal-breaker, in a spaceship game, but if a company is going to get into first-person gaming (and they hope to maximise the revenue from the venture) it'd probably be smart to do it a bit better.

Well, if that's what they meant, in terms of NPCs, no, but in terms of players, well, there is the cowbow themed suit, and if someone wants to scream yee haw as they make a kill, that's just fine and dandy.

wow, cool clothes, and armour that looks like its cool and useful! Take my ARX!
From what I can see ED as a whole has strayed from its 'style bible', or that it had one to a point and now its whatever is cool at the moment. The aesthetics of the alpha and beta changed with the released game, and then changed again with Powerplay leaders (the 'first' people in ED), which disagreed again with the BGS contacts clothes and fashion which then clashed with engineers and that now clash with EDO as a whole.

Its why I complain and grumble so much with ship paints and kit parts- its all a jumble now. But then the project is 10 years old and FD want that sweet coin.

But what really really ReaLlLy makes me lose control of my eyelids is the thought of some one dressed as a cyborg cat Teletubby flying around in a racing paint eAGLE

Compare that to style / concepts early on in the project

I don't have FDev's sales numbers but I think that staying closer to that original designs, giving ED a darker and more worn look (Alien(s), the Expanse) would boost the purchase of the game and paint jobs. Elite was always set into a dystopian and dark future and ED continued the lore with Guardians and Thargoids.
Although I bought a lot of ARX before Christmas to express my gratitude to FDev for their work on the game, I can't spend them because there are literally no outfits, ship kits or paint jobs which I want to display on my commander, weapons or ships 🤣.

now I shall adorn it further by wearing a hat on top of the helmet
That helmet would actually be a really good one to me if it didn’t have that ridiculous hat on top of it because “muh space cowboy look”.

Similarly, for the Nomad set mentioned, I would be interested in simply the hood for my character in pressurized environments (although maybe not the scarf). But there is literally no way of separating it from the “helmet” aka opaque faceplate. So like no thanks. Take notes, Frontier - separate helmet from additional cosmetic item on top.

… I’m also going to use this opportunity to mention again that helmets just “appear” out of thin air (or vacuum). Once I saw a researcher NPC walk out of a building and then the gas mask helmet thingy materialized out of nowhere on their head. No animation, nothing, it was literally just not there one moment and then there.

(Now to read the other two pages… and yes, that weird bloated puffy armor is just ridiculous and I couldn’t understand the design idea behind it when they put it out)

I'm going to do that right now while I PP.

Don’t forget the glorious spinning turbines of jet engines in space.
Japanese have a wonderful expression for those turbines: "Make that an unseen thing!"
The last ship kit I really liked was the Quest pack for the Mandalay which added some nice greebles albeit a little bugged (the canisters are not shown in yellow like in the illustrations).
