DLC 19 Speculation

I haven't really liked a pack a lot since Grasslands. Some of the packs after have had 1 or 2 animals I've liked in them but the rest I wasn't super excited about, like Tropical had the Fossa, Oceania had the Tasmanian Devil and the Flying Fox Bat, Eurasia had the Wolverine and Sloth bear, and Zookeepers had the Spectacled Bear and Sifaka, but the last pack that I was excited about 3 or more animals in was Grasslands. Honestly, I kind of wish Zookeepers had been the last pack because I have more than enough mods that I can use for what isn't in the game at this point and I don't want to have to worry about any future updates breaking the mods. The only animals left that I want that don't have even mods for them are species that are super obscure and would likely never make in the game as official animals anyway like the Chinese Water Deer, Chevrotain/Mouse Deer species, Bezoar Ibex, Armenian Mouflon, Bali Cattle, Gayal, Domestic and/or Wild Yak, Golden Palm Civet, Otter Civet, Sulawesi Dwarf Cuscus, Sulawesi Bear Cuscus, Himalayan Wolf, Coywolf/Eastern Coyote, Side-striped Jackal, New Guinea Singing Dog, and all the species of South American false "foxes"/zorros (except the Culpeo which does have a mod). The only animals of this that I could realistically see possibly coming to the game is either the Wild or Domestic Yak and possibly but less likely the Armenian Mouflon.

sounds like I didn't miss much and pretty much what I expected. PC DLC likely in April if there's news coming next month. Okay, technically next month is in three days, but I think we all know that means about a month from now.
They suggested that they'd share more news with us during next month's Unlocked! So they got even a bit more specific than that.
It's clear Planet Zoo is not Frontier's favorite child any longer and hasn't been for a good year or even two years. But it's a consistent seller. My guess is they were going to stop with Zookeepers, and then PC2's release was rough. They realized income on PC2 was going to be a bit under what they projected, so back to the consistent seller it is.

FWIW I'm still hoping for two more packs, but I guess we'll see what happens when the next pack comes out. Also, we have zero chance of flying birds or marine animals. It would have been amazing but if you're still holding on to that, let it go.
This is definitely possible! Though, I still like my theory that Zookeeper was meant to be a bigger pack... And they split it into two packs to spread out the revenue. With the next pack having some of the more highly-requested species and actual zookeeper-oriented props.

But that doesn't mean they might not push out a second DLC for the reasons you suggested. I'm hoping for two but TBH, I'm not expecting one. Guess we'll have to wait and see!

A love how frontier is trying to/ tried to get the labor of love award for planet zoo on steam XD
I mean, to be fair, the game is very much a labor of love. That's one thing I'll stand behind hard. From the jump they have taken fan suggestions and implemented them in the game. Most of the features and quality of life improvements in-game now were part of free updates because fans pushed/asked for them.

Not gonna fault the full development team because the new livestream format doesn't give me the warm n' fuzzies.

I was speculating about this since October. Maybe they'll have their Unlocked host give a third disclaimer in the April livestream 😛
"And now, we know our PC players have been waiting patiently for news. Well, guess what? We have some! Check out our socials soon!" :ROFLMAO:

and considering planet zoo had over 3500 players active today while pc2 their new favourite child had less than half (1400)
Still makes sense. I'd imagine they've spent 3+ years and $$$ developing Planet Coaster 2. They need to make that money back (and hopefully then-some). So focusing on them makes infinitely more sense right now...

PZ players will play the game and purchase DLC regardless.

I don't know how Frontier came to the conclusion that having another wait period as long as the one between Barnyard and Zookeepers would be healthy for the community. I'm just tired at this point, I need something, anything to make me believe that they haven't left Planet Zoo to rot.
They told us we have more news about DLC coming in April and the SteamDB is being updated constantly. They haven't left it to rot. The gap between DLCs is longer than last year by a few weeks probably but... This is the new normal. People just need to accept it, TBH.

Another way of looking at it: Don't you think they'd be pumping out DLC every single month if it were possible to do so? They would make more money that way. And that's the reason Frontier exists so... I'm assuming there's a valid reason they went from 4 DLCs per year to 2 and it's probably resourcing/budget. I'm sure if they could release more content faster they would be doing exactly that.

frontier is like that dad who just doesn't get the concept of communication they do so much for us and through their actions show that they are listening even if things come out not quite how we expect the only problem is they just dont know how to express themselves without action so we feel neglected even when we very much arent.

I remember at the beginning they were teasing even a free update feature(s) months before release to keep us speculating.
Now the guy just say "we don't have much to say right now" what do you mean?? There is surely known the theme the DLC is? The animal roster? Could they tease us with one single picture of some objects/plants or fur/feather color of the main animal or sth? Don't tell me it's just a month from release date and you still didn't even started a meeting despite saying "there is a LOT coming" in November 24'??
They were able to tease megalodon in JWE2 with three seconds video two months before the DLC release. I don't get it 🤷‍♂️

game launch they have been pretty bad at communication from right after DLC release all the way to the point where they would do their special livestream (which would be a release in 1-2 weeks). So essentially, every 3 months they would be silent for all but about 3 weeks of that. Their social media shares were what I call "feel good" content - nothing informational, just showing off what players had done, the community challanges, and the occasional animal picture for world "insert animal" day.The community manager though were active then at least, it was definitely something.

I think your memory is clouded then because there's never been a case where things were teased months in advance. It's always been less than 2/3 weeks at most, and far more often it has been a few days to a week tops.
...And even that might be conservative based on my memory. It's pretty fair to assume that when something gets teased it'll be a matter of days which is also just good marketing. Because you've got people's attention, don't have to rebuild hype, etc.

I mean, I still remember good old expansion pack times in games where things would be teased long in advance. But it seems the audience was very different back then. It had a larger attention span than 2 year olds... And we had feature loaded packs, wheras now DLCs are just collectables.

With PZ DLCs it is always number of animals + 2 days = Days hyped pre release. And "hyped" is,a strong term here, it's not creating hype anymore, it's just a soulless info dumb. I miss engagement and special live streams etc.
A world without community managers is a boring world.

something that hasn’t been brought up in a while (unless I missed it). Small mammals. If frontier could make a new type of exhibit that is bigger then our current exhibits and maybe smaller then the WTE that could accommodate small mammals. Think loris, shrews, rats, mink, weasels, ferrets, squirrels, hedgehogs etc.
would anyone like that idea?

Maybe, but IMO lorises would be fine in our current walkthrough exhibit given their similar locomotion to tree sloths
They would "work" in that format but given the way lorises are usually presented in zoos it would be just a bridge too far away from realism for me. They're generally housed in smaller enclosures. And I'm struggling to think of a single walk-through exhibit IRL that presents them. Doesn't mean they don't exist but... I'd hesitate to say they're even remotely common.

IDK, the longer the game goes on the less I care about all those things and the more I just care about the game itself and what it has to offer.

Don't get me wrong, I loved all the special live streams and the cool ways of teasing a DLC, but at the end of the day I value all the pieces from for instance the South America Pack much more than I'll ever value how it was teased through social media, no matter how cool it was. That doesn't mean that I disliked it and that I don't think it would be better if we at least moved a bit more into that direction again, because the last stream wasn't anything to write home about; but I'm not feeling sad or disrespected either.

When it comes to the DLC approach, I vastly prefer PZs. I can only really compare to ZT2 as that was the only game I really spent my time with in such kind of release cycles; but we get more content in a full year now than we ever got in expansion packs with ZT2 and major features are no longer locked behind paywalls ensuring that multiple DLCs can use these features without basically softlocking users from buying those.

Good luck if you wanted an underwater view for your hippos and you didn't buy Marine Mania when playing ZT2, that won't work. You wanted elevated paths but you didn't have Endangered Species? Sucks to be you! You wanted a vehicle ride but didn't get Endangered Species or African Adventure? Bummer. With PZ, all these years later I don't care that deepdiving was part of the free update and not part of the Aquatics Pack. I care about the fact that my animals can deep-dive in the first place. Imagine if that was locked behind a paywall, how sad would that be.

To each their own and I don't want to tell anyone what to do, but idk, I think it offers a lot more peace of mind to just let it go.

We have tortoises in glass terrariums, I don't think that's more realistic than walkthrough lorises
It is, TBH. That tortoise is pretty small IRL. I'd tend to agree they could/should have been habitat species but... The exhibit works for the tortoise just fine. Functionally and aesthetically.

Lorises are tiny, move super slow, and aren't generally kept in walk-through exhibits. They also live in fairly small groups (2-4 adults). It would look pretty ridiculous in-game.

EDIT: Not that they'd get close to people and/or would do this but... They also produce a toxin.

You can turn the WTE into non walkthrough and use building pieces to "reduce" it's size. Or turn it into an indoor noctural house enclosure. The WTE would just be a way to get the lorises into the game. With the creative freedom you can then make of it what ever you want. Just like people using the wte with null walls to make the illusion of free flying wild butterflies.

Aside from size, is all of this not also true of the sloth we have in-game?
Sloths aren't uncommon in walk-through exhibits. But it's a confluence of things... If slow lorises weren't potentially toxic, twice the size, and were actually common as walk-through animals? I could see it.

But as it stands: I just don't think it would make sense.

Obviously, hah! And I'd probably do that if they were put in-game because it's a fun challenge but... I'd much rather not have to deal with that every single time if I want to build an indoor habitat for them. Mostly because of the size of the exhibits in contrast to the animals in question, the size of the groups they live in, etc.

It's just a very different thing from the sloths, bats, and butterflies.
