Weekly Hot Takes
what is one animal that you want purely for "selfish" reasons, for example I want a hyrax because I think there neat, even though I don't really need them to build zoos I really want then anyway. Also for example, you want a animal just for one zoo/zoo recreation and that's about it. So anyway go nuts, and make it as random as possible, the only rule is no cryptids or extinct animals, besides that go crazy with your choice.
Most of my 'selfish' wants are local animals and stuff I think is cute. My inflexible personal big three wants/needs:
The American black bear is my number two animal mostly because it's the one big star animal native to where I've lived. I think being from North America pulls me toward even more of our mammals like the bobcat, white-tailed deer, porcupine, and bighorn sheep, but the black bear is the one I really can't let go of. Its zoo presence, media presence, color morphs, biome diversity, and status as the last bear species missing make it seem like at least a solid choice for many, so I don't feel too selfish about promoting it.
I want tamarins even more, but the absence of mini-monkeys and low prevalence of South American animals in the roster plus its popularity, zoo presence, media presence, useful rig, and status as a notable conservation education animal makes it seem much more like a great choice than a selfish one. My selfish reasons for wanting this tamarin in particular are thinking it's pretty and it being the first conservation species I encountered where I understood they were being bred in captivity specifically for release to the wild. Preschool me thought that was cool. Even if they add a bunch of other tamarins, the Golden Lion Tamarin will remain my number one animal.
The serval is my number three pick and firmly behind the GLT and ABB. I think it's a very solid choice. Cats are well-received by many, and this one is popular, has a good media presence, and is very common in zoos around the world. Personally, I loved watching videos of servals and savannah cats. I've seen many servals in zoos, and I think I'd imagine my PZ servals would be rescues from breeders or vloggers. They also just look cool. No matter how many cats they add, I'm still going to want it.
Beyond that...
Most of my personal wants after that kind of follow the wishlist and general sentiments here. I want more monkeys, especially South American ones but also a couple of African ones. I'm kind of flexible about which species, but I find myself especially drawn to spider monkeys, additional tamarins, and guerezas. I really want more birds, especially the flying fan favorites like parrots, eagles, owls, toucans, and kookaburras but also some habitat ones for bird houses and duck ponds. I also want mixed wetlands species for tropical houses, especially the grey-crowned crane (a bit more of a selfish favorite), a least one ibis, at least one duck, a freshwater turtle, perhaps an agouti, maybe a tropical Asian giant squirrel/rat, and tamarins, again. For other mixed species habitats, I want colorful Asian pheasants and muntjacs to go with my red pandas as well as American flamingos to go with my Galapagos tortoises. I badly want a few more popular regional picks, like the coati, ocelot/margay, and tree kangaroo. I can personally see value in more from South America and a bit from Australia. I also think a coastal pack could be cool.
I have some more obscure favorites that I don't really expect. I think red-shanked doucs and ribbon seals are beautiful. I like tamanduas about as much as coatis. Although I don't think the roster needs more African ungulates, the greater kudu is my favorite antelope, and I still want it. My carnivoran bias also pulls me towards even more cats and dogs, especially the fishing cat and black-backed jackal, but I acknowledge they aren't necessary. Even for my own builds, I mostly need monkeys, birds, and regional stuff.
