Where's the danger in Elite Dangerous?

I have a feeling I'd be in more danger walking my dog in the park.

Until not long ago, carrying out transport missions with a Type-9 required even one or two commanders from your community to escort you to your destination. Now, however, I've made a couple hundred trips between Ngobe, Kehperagwe, and my own system, and I've barely been interdicted by a single, defenseless cobra.

In my desperate boredom, I've played in the open, hoping a ganker would give me a scare, but not even that!

I want to feel fear! I want to flee with scorched shields and the feeling of a narrow escape... I want the thrill of yesteryear, when you prepared for the worst when you entered the destination system. I want that feeling of injustice when you were interdicted 12 mm from the station.

And even, why not? I want to die.

Interesting - probably just unlucky, then. I've had plenty of pirates show up in my system after my T-9.
(I do use SCO, so they show up just in time to see me dock, but they at least make the attempt once in a while)

You could stack on a few Threat 8 Mining Missions?)

Mmm... good idea

The word 'Dangerous' in the title refers to the combat rank, not necessarily the environment. You can make this game as dangerous as you want it. Don't expect your wishes to come to you.

How low can low security go?
I was thinking about a pirate-y system that would just about avoid going into lockdown all too often but I never played the BGS gardens much.

There's a commercial outpost "Legit Markit" which is totally not just bait to lure traders with goods to sell into the system. Around the outer star a pirate installation "LTT 10838 C 1" (they're a clever bunch) and Criminal Outpost "UNIDENTIFIED SIGNAL SOURCE" (dem Coppers won't ever find it). A space farm for their veggies and maybe a medical installation. Then top it off with another pirate installation named "HIGH GRADE EMISSIONS" (they're really clever).

Lastly, get the criminal faction in charge of the system instead of the democratic feds but that has less of an influence on pirate activity, I think?

You certainly can push it well below the default zero if you're making your own system.

Thing is, if you don't want a permanent Lockdown at the slightest provocation because of how it affects the security sliders, you probably need to put an Anarchy faction in charge - and then the security level becomes a lot less relevant anyway.
By what I read about lockdowns, the "development level" is a factor, too? I added a space farm partly because of that (and also because my creative management sim sense wants to see independent food production).

I was only wondering about how to make a "dangerous" system. And also wanted to spend ARX on some funny names :)

I really should have waited until the first outpost finally opened and then pushed the anarchy faction. Now a middle faction is in charge of the space farm which means I'll have to fight them in a war first, I guess? I'll see how that goes.

There's other 'dangerous' missions one can do outside of open. missions to work on bgs, illegal missions for a faction, assasination missions (some of them get you targeted by a faction or gang with multiple interdictions in a system), missions to recon data or sabotage a megaship, combat zones where you can try to disable an opposing megaship or force it to flee, odyssey missions with a high threat level, combat zones, powerplay undermining and related combat, passenger missions where some shady passengers don't want to get scanned, or similar for reclusive celebritiy passengers, thargoid skirmishes.

As for the open play aspect of it, do you fly Horizons-only by any chance? I noticed that there is way less traffic there compared to Odyssey, and people tend to forget that the two client modes do not support cross-instancing.
