I've encountered bighorn sheep in the wild. Usually, I take a few pictures from a safe distance and move on. One time was a bit different. I was hiking with my family in Glacier National Park. We were hoping to hike up one of the mountains, but the end of the trail was covered in snow. Several groups of other hikers were resting on some rocks near the snow. We noticed a bighorn sheep browsing about 30-50 meters away and decided to eat our packed lunches on a large, flat rock where we could watch it. I grabbed my SunChips first for some salt and opened the bag with an audible crinkle. Before I'd even stuck my hand into the bag, four different rodents, including a pika and at least one species of ground squirrel, practically materialized on the edge of the rock. They stared longingly at my bag but did not approach further. I don't mind sharing my snacks, but I ignored them because I didn't want to hurt the animals or get in trouble with the park. Then, the wind changed direction, blowing the sweet and salty smell of toasted and fried grains towards the sheep. He turned towards the smell, sniffed twice, and looked at me. I yelled at him to go away and told him he couldn't have my chips. He turned away, but the progress of his browsing started shifting more in our general direction until he was just over 10 m away. I yelled at him a few more times when he kept glancing at me, but I knew it was time to leave. We walked away to look at the closed part of the trail, and I tried to eat again, but suddenly, his head was poking out of the brush on the path in front of me. He did not charge but simply sniffed in my direction and licked his lips plaintively. I turned around and walked back towards the crowds, hoping to deter him, but he followed me right through the crowds, scattering them with laughter and phones abandoned on tripods. At that point, I gave up trying to eat and escaped further down the mountain, where I was able to eat my peanut butter and jelly in peace. Honestly, I think he could have knocked me down or threatened me to steal my food, but he seemed very respectful about 'asking' even if he did ask too many times. I hope he got enough food later.
I know it's one of the least-liked picks, but I'm pretty happy we're getting bighorn in the game. I can imagine fun habitats for them in warmer climates than Glacier.
