DLC 19 Speculation

Wouldn't be that bad to be honest, the cattle we should've got in the barnyard pack imo.
But now that you mention it, hear me out...

I'd love mustangs! I unfortunately don't think they're too likely though...

So how would you all round out the deer roster then? Within reason ofcourse.

While im personally not really dying for more i can agree that there objectively should be more than we have now.
I think 2-3 could bring them up to a good spot. One for NA like the elk and reeves muntjac together with a more classical deer for asia would round them up pretty nicely. I think id go with the sambar due to their huge range and to vary the deer up with a tropical species
Elk + Pudu + Muntjac at the minimum. :)

Honestly I’d be happy with just the muntjac for another deer, it’s also among the only ungulates left that would excite me along with an Indian antelope. 4-5 is actually a pretty good number to me, I’d be thrilled to have that much for many of my favorite groups lol (waterfowl, landfowl, gruiformes, etc). If Frontier has to keep loading us with ungulates though I’ll certainly take them over the bovids we’re drowning in.

Although not actually a deer, a mouse deer would be nice too and vastly different from any of the ungulates we currently have, I’m a big fan of the nervous little creature genre and these guys are one of my favorites

Look at this delightful little freak, like the ungulate version of an anxious chihuahua

Why is it that Americans hate the white-tailed deer but us Europeans love our deer lol
I love the White-tailed Deer and would be ecstatic if it showed up! I have seen them in the wild many times so maybe to some Americans they are not "exotic" enough. Maybe White-tailed Deer are like if Frontier added a Sciurus squirrel. People would be upset... They would say "You don't go to a zoo to see this animal!" I don't know though why a ton of Americans hate the white-tailed...

It's probably the weird "it's in my backyard, therefore not a zoo animal" mindset when kangaroos are in the backyards of folks in Australia; heck, they're roadkill down there, but people bash on armadillos and raccoons because I dunno...

I would like the WTD because it's an iconic animal. All over the America's, from Canada to Argentina. It's the coyote/red fox of ungulates🤣

Edit: actually, the boar would be the red fox of ungulates because they're all over the world, both naturally and unaturally

They're the only species if American deer I really don't like and I was also bit dramatic. I'm from Maine, so i kind of have to love Moose, and I'm obsessed with elk and reindeer. If you want them, great (for you lol)!

Here's why I personally don't like them:
-Very little connection to conservation, actually are overpopulated in much of the country (I don't think every animal added has to have a sob story, but I also like getting species that zoos actually do conservation work for irl)
-Mostly kept in private collections in the US (70 ish holdings at the species level according to ZTL). Out of the 41 (mostly accredited) zoos I've been to across the country I've seen them in 1.
-Lastly, elk exsist

I don't have anything against people who want them, I just find them a very boring addition.

As someone currently living in the US I’ve just never seen deer as essentials. To be fair, they certainly aren’t not zoo animals (WTD does have 106 holdings in NA), it’s just that they’re more in roadside/small budget ones than in major zoos. Though major ones do have some Asian deer and wapiti somewhat more commonly, I still wouldn’t call them zoo staples. I’m always surprised at how much deer are in Eurasian zoos as someone who hardly ever sees them.

A NA deer wouldn’t be a terrible addition, but it’s very, very low on the list of what the region should get (cough, cough, birds)

Yea normally I’m not a “it’s in my backyard it doesn’t belong in a zoo” kind of guy cause that’s subjective. But it has little captive presence as well globally
Yes, that's the point I was trying to make. I just didn't express it well

And to be honest, I don't see many deer in zoos period. I really don't, and I've been to a few here, some roadside, some zoos in Mexico, etc.
I just don't see many deer. The only deer I saw was a young WTD in the children's zoo here at the Houston Zoo.

But speaking of what kinda deer I want, I would love the elk (as long as they receive their bugles), and musk deer (not true deer, but shush). Those are really all I personally want

Everything people have said above about deer "not being zoo animals" in the eyes of Americans is true; I also think we just don't think super highly of deer in general over here? They kind of have a reputation of being dumb and getting themselves turned into roadkill, at least in the south.

I don't hate the white-tail, but don't find it particularly interesting for PZ anyway when there are better cervid options like the pudus, muntjacs, or the marsh deer.
