Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

My laptop is over two and a half years old now and runs the game OK My internet speed is down to BT, I think the operating instructions are in Ancient Geek.
But it was a cutting edge machine when bought which helps.
Well, calling mine state of the art when I bought it would be a wild exaggeration. I had it quite some time before starting to play Elite 3 years ago...
I have no clue what language the instructions are in. Might as well be Guardian runes...

I'm with BT as well. Over WiFi as I haven't had the time (or money) to get some cable guy to lay down some CAT6 ethernet for me. Not an easy job so I won't be attempting it.

Still manage to get 350 ish mbits though so not too shabby. Ping is normally around 12ish.

Still can't decide on my next goal in ED. Beginning to wish I hadn't maxed some ranks :D

Always the option of starting afresh * or creating an alt account ** I suppose.

* NOOO! MAKE IT STOP!

** I'm not really into alt accounts as they have to stiff all over again. See *
Well there are still PP2, CQC and Colonisation to tide you over till Vanguards is released. Then next year you could join in the new mass expedition Distant Worlds 3.

I kept thinking of an Alt but holding out for some time, then finally bought a second account in December, on the seventh birthday of my main account. It’s actually quite easy to set up & manage with an additional Steam (and ofc Frontier) account - they share the same ED game install and one can switch between the two via Steam quite painlessly… recently this has allowed me to stay in the bubble on the main account with the Alt free to explore further and further away :]

Do I get that right that you have two accounts via steam?

I'm contemplating a second account for "bubble duty" (racing, CGs and so on), while Janice (the lady in my profile pic) can go and take longer turns out in the black without the need to rush back if something interesting transpires in the bubble.

According to the guides I found, this is the only way [with both accounts on Steam] and the second ED player account requires a second Frontier account. After the bit of setup it’s all good - you can switch Steam accounts quite easily, automatically switching the FD account in launcher and to the appropriate CMDR on login :]

Xactly what I’m doing with the two accounts - now if only something new & really interesting would happen in the bubble… or I’m going to end up with two explorers ;]

Just remembered this.
Back when I started in 2016 people were getting Support to rest their ranks down because NPCs were now too tough due to their learning to dodge and shoot back rather than fly in a straight line or turn in place when attacked.

Perhaps you could ask Support to set just your ranks back to Harmless etc, all the benefits of a restart without the downsides of no money, permits or engineering access.

I just couldn't though... couldn't... it's taken me six years to get 4 x Elite V :D

It would be like being made to be 18 years old again just to work my whole life to get to retirement...

I do have one Elite V left to get (I don't count CQC :D ) but I think it's safe to say I'll never reach it.

That DW3 though, really does sound like something I'd like to try.

At the moment I am hauling/helping in the Shoulder of Orion phase.
There are Threads about DW3 over in the explorers forum.

I haven't been able to play in a few days, I found this guy on my fifth jump.

Since the gaming PC is probably the one critical connection, you don't need to get into posho patched cabling and wall sockets. A back-to-back Cat 5e single cable can be tacked to a skirting board just like we used to do with t'phone line. Everything else can stay on wireless and if you're only going wired on one PC you've probably got a suitable port on BT's freebie broadband device.

Sounds like your wireless is alright though. Mine is if I channel-hop once every couple of months as neighbours buy various devices and therefore clog up different random parts of the spectrum over time.

Could change Power which would reset your rank but not introduce all the pointless early pain you'd have with an alt...
